Licorice Pizza is my #1…. Looking forward to catching up with Annette…. I had the same reaction to Nightmare Alley. I thought it was really good, but I could not stop thinking about it. I just picked up tickets to see a B&W version of it at the New Beverly cinema. Can’t wait to revisit…. Overall great List!
I truly admire that you don't put a bajillion caveats as to what films "count" for your lists & that you aren't dragged around by the "popular" or "trendy" choices! You pick your own best & worst based on your own opinions.
Your lists always give me more movies to watch that didn't cross my radar. I was surprised to not see any mention of Ghostbusters Afterlife, Encanto, The Last Duel and Last Night in Soho
I loved The French Dispatch, Nightmare Alley, Licorice Pizza, Black Widow, Spiderman: No Way Home, Tick, Tick ...Boom and Dune. I hated Annette, Cyrnao, and In the Heights.
Yeah nothing against Stuckmann at all and I wish him all the success with his directing career and his kids but his channel has definitely dipped because of it all.
@@ZachBobBob Personally I feel that Stuckmann has become more critical within the last three years which I do appreciate. I thought he had been to lenient and generous with his ratings before. Dan Murrell is a critic I have respected because he was very critical. Back at ScreenJunkies he had to defend himself for being so critical. However, there were a couple of reviews (before he left SJ) where he was completely off, disregarding pretty much all of his standards and giving movies a pass which he wouldn't have done before. That was pretty strange. I am glad he left SJ becuase I feel he has returned to his former glory.
As a movie nerd of all genres... I never gave Garfield his fair share till this years releases. Stunning. Bo Burnham... Man... That shit was beyond thought provoking. Enjoyed your lists.

King Richard Honorable Mentions aka Top 20: Raya and the Last Dragon, Luca, My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission, American Underdog, Belle, Belfast, Dune, Cousteau (Documentary), and The Jesus Music (Documentary)
Funfact: Anette is one of 3 Movies in my life I left instead of finishing it. Thought that I would love it and was so dead wrong. Nearly 50% of my audience that day already had left the theatre. So a very special movie indeed.

Hey Dan that's a great video but that would have been cool to get reviews of some of those movies (Belfast, nightmare alley, annette) along the year, especially if you've watched them several times. Most of the movies in your top 10 I never even heard about, that's a shame, I'd love for your channel to be the place when you're actually aware of some of the great movies that comes out and not only the blockbusters I know you're busy, and MCU content get probably more clicks but it would be nice to get more reviews from smaller movies. Cheers, love the channel!
I did a review for Nightmare Alley on the channel - and reviews for Belfast and several other contenders on my podcast channel. I also did video reviews for C'mon C'mon, tick tick...Boom! and Pig. It's a tough balancing act, plus for the majority of last year, I also had All My Movies on my plate, which was a massive time commitment. I'm looking to build more programming on the channel this year!
@@DanMurrellMovies damn I feel like I a fool now. I admit I don't follow the podcast channel. I didn't realised their was things exclusively in audio form. Apologies.
Always appreciate your opinions, Dan, even if I don't necessarily agree (for instance, my worst decades later sequel was Candyman and best was Resurrections). Regardless, I know you speak from the heart _and_ head with your thoughts, and can't wait to see you go up against 2022's offerings.

That’s where you’re WRONG Dan because I DID see The Night House! Lol but no it’s probably my favorite female performance this year. Rebecca Hall is fantastic.

Dan, I wish I could watch Annette through your eyes. I totally wanted to like it, I love Adam Driver and I love musicals, so I thought it was going to be a home run. It's definitely not a typical musical and I think that's what threw me. Maybe I should give it a rewatch? But anyways can't wait to hear you talk about movies in 2022!

Lovely list, Dan. I might not agree with all of your choices but it's nice to see you praise films that other critics have largely disliked like Belfast and Nightmare Alley. Your appreciation for those films makes me more excited to check them out. I would love to recommend my two favourite films of the year to you. They're both technically 2020 releases but I didn't get to catch up with them until this year. They're called Rocks (a UK drama about a young girl who's thrust into the world of adulthood and has to try to take care of her little brother) and Las Niñas (a Spanish coming of age film about being on the cusp of adolescence). Both films are tremendous explorations of the female experience and they're just gorgeous, moving naturalistic narratives. I really think you would appreciate them.
Licorice Pizza is casual effortless genius. Better on repeat viewings. Bradley Cooper's coked up Jon Peters is intensely hilarious. Alan Haim and Cooper Hoffman (Phillip Seymour Hoffman's son) have the best chemistry since.. Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. in all their MCU pairings. Comedy gold.
This reminds me of when screen junkies used to do their holiday awards with Hal as host! I miss those days!

Not even 2 minutes in and you got me with teasing my boy Benny C, LOVE IT!
I am so happy I subbed to this channel. Keep it up Dan!!! Can’t wait to see what 2022 brings
Great list, Daniel san! I have Annette currently at #3 behind The Humans and Petite Maman. It truly was a great year for movies.
Great List, hard to argue against it!
The only thing for me missing is a good word for 'The Last Duel'.
My top three (and also the only three of your top ten that I've seen):
1: Don't Look Up
2: Dune
3: Spider-Man No Way Home
I truly admire that you don't put a bajillion caveats as to what films "count" for your lists & that you aren't dragged around by the "popular" or "trendy" choices! You pick your own best & worst based on your own opinions.
Your lists always give me more movies to watch that didn't cross my radar.
I was surprised to not see any mention of Ghostbusters Afterlife, Encanto, The Last Duel and Last Night in Soho
The fact that they didn't get mentioned is another indicator of just how strong this year was, because I liked all of those films to varying degrees.
@@DanMurrellMovies Definitely! So many great films this year. 2022 is shaping up to be a great year for film too
I’m glad ya gave the night house some props one of my favorites of the year
Woah with Annette at the #1! I’d been avoiding it because of mixed reviews, but I think I’ve got to see it now!
It's a trip worthy of your time, my good Sir! Think silent era German expressionism meets broadway meets murder mystery meets..... Pinocchio???
I loved The French Dispatch, Nightmare Alley, Licorice Pizza, Black Widow, Spiderman: No Way Home, Tick, Tick ...Boom and Dune.
I hated Annette, Cyrnao, and In the Heights.
I loved your categories!!
Dan you were right you offended me with the Nolan comment lmao. Anyways good list
I was amazing with how Kristen Stewart nailed Diana voice the most for all the accent work this year
I feel like Dan's channel gives me in part what Chris Stuckmann's channel used to. Thank goodness Dan came along.
Yeah nothing against Stuckmann at all and I wish him all the success with his directing career and his kids but his channel has definitely dipped because of it all.
No need to pick one! They're both A-OK in my book.
Love these little extra categories at the start!
As a movie nerd of all genres... I never gave Garfield his fair share till this years releases. Stunning.
Bo Burnham... Man... That shit was beyond thought provoking.
Enjoyed your lists.
My Personal Top 10 is kind of all over the place as nothing this year screamed to me, "this was the best thing I watched this year." It was just a lot I really enjoyed.
10. Eternals
9. Revue Starlight: The Movie
8. In the Heights
7. Encanto
6. Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon A Time
5. The Rescue (Documentary)
4. Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
3. Tick Tick Boom
2. Spider-Man: No Way Home
1. King Richard
Honorable Mentions aka Top 20: Raya and the Last Dragon, Luca, My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission, American Underdog, Belle, Belfast, Dune, Cousteau (Documentary), and The Jesus Music (Documentary)
Funfact: Anette is one of 3 Movies in my life I left instead of finishing it. Thought that I would love it and was so dead wrong. Nearly 50% of my audience that day already had left the theatre. So a very special movie indeed.
Lol I haven't seen it but I often find my opinions lining up with Dan's so I will definitely seek this out in streaming to see if I'm on the Loved It or Hated It group
I think illhaye it too but great cast.....what were the other 2 movies you walked out of? Just curious if I'll resonate with your other opinions. Tx
It's not for everyone. If you liked Holy Motors you'll like Annette.
Fantastic list -- I can't wait to watch a few of these! Thanks for the year in content Dan!

Honorable mention : Pig, Lamb, Titane, Raya and The Last Dragon, A Quiet Place Part II, Passing, Shang Chi, The Green Knight, Zack Snyder's Justice League, Encanto
I think some of these movies on my list that not too many people heard off deserves more attention
1:38 which is funny because he talked about his Penguin pronunciation on The Graham Norton Show (Ironically promoting Penguins of Madagascar)~ :')
Hey Dan that's a great video but that would have been cool to get reviews of some of those movies (Belfast, nightmare alley, annette) along the year, especially if you've watched them several times. Most of the movies in your top 10 I never even heard about, that's a shame, I'd love for your channel to be the place when you're actually aware of some of the great movies that comes out and not only the blockbusters
I know you're busy, and MCU content get probably more clicks but it would be nice to get more reviews from smaller movies.
My Top 10 Movies of 2021:
1. Bo Burnham's INSIDE
2. Spider-Man: No Way Home
3. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
4. Pig
5. Saint Maud
6-10... I didn't see nearly as many movies this year as I usually do, so let's stop there.
Shang-Chi really worked for me, probably my new favorite Marvel movie, previously Thor: Ragnarok.
I get you. I keep rewatching it just like I did with Thor Ragnarok. Just an an all out fun movie
Great video, just missed not seeing Titane, The hand of god, Green knight, or The card counter.
Overall a great great year for cinema
Looks like my January watchlist just grew a bit. Thanks Dan for this nice recap!
That’s where you’re WRONG Dan because I DID see The Night House! Lol but no it’s probably my favorite female performance this year. Rebecca Hall is fantastic.
Me too! In theaters!!
I haven't seen that many 2021 movies yet, I have a lot of catch up to do but my top 5 right now are:
1. The Last Duel
2. Dune
3. Don't Look Up
4. Spider-Man: No Way Home
5. The Suicide Squad
But I am confident a year from now this might be significantly different. Although taking down number 1 will be a tall order, I seriously loved that movie.
Dune is my number one of the year. It has stuck with me ever since I watched it, and I can not wait to buy it on 4k and watch it again.
My top 10 favorite movies of 2021
10 Encanto
9 tick, tick…BOOM!
8 Dune
7 Pig
6 A Quiet Place Part II
5 Cruella
4 Last Night In Soho
3 The Last Duel
2 Val
1 Bo Burnham: Inside
thanks for pointing me to Annette--I wonder how this movie got made, but I love it (I think--I'm going to be thinking about it a lot). Not for everyone, but you might like and at the least you will have the most incredible dreams after experiencing it.
When u thought Kenneth Branagh can't do everything,
there he goes has 2 movies both best & worst on Dan's list.
TOP 10 BEST MOVIES OF 2021:
1. Spider-Man: No Way Home
2. The Mitchells vs The Machines
3. A Quiet Place Part II
4. The Suicide Squad
5. No Time To Die
6. In The Heights
7. West Side Story
8. Summer Of Soul

TOP 5 WORST MOVIES OF 2021:
1. Yes Day
2. After We Fell
3. The Boss Baby: Family Business
4. Thunderforce
5. Breaking News In Yuba County
Rebecca Hall is MAD underrated.
Dan! The first critic Ive seen to put Annette so high. Great list!
Thank you for the ANNETTE love! Also one of my favorite movies of the year. Also loved your MVP of the year. I could have easily gone with either Andrew Garfield or Adam Driver myself
I’d love to see a chart of top box office actors of 2021. The numbers does it but it’s over 3 years. Surely Benedict Wong wins as he was in both Spider-Man and Shang Chi
I'm with Dan. Totally enraptured me with it's wonderfully unique style and fully committed performances.
But as I was watching it, I knew it was a love it or hate it movie.
My sofar favorite movies from 2021.
1. Josee, the Tiger and the Fish (2020)
2. Drive My Car (2021)
3. Licorice Pizza (2021)

12. In the Heights (2021)
13. Riders of Justice (2020)
*2021 Oscar eligibility.
I nominate this for best UA-cam video of the year. That was a wildly entertaining list Dan thank you
I swear John Campea was the only "reviewer", and I use that term loosely, to bash Cop Shop.
Love your list. Not sure why you had to throw the Nolan dig in there, but enjoy always hearing your thoughts about films.
My favs from this year were in the heights, Spider-Man no way home and Encanto. That soundtrack is still bumpin in my car even after I drop off my son at daycare “we don’t talk about brunooooo”
Top 3 films of the year 1.West Side Story 2.Dune 3. King Richard
Best Actor Will Smith
Best Supporting Actress Ariana Dubois
Worst Picture Free Guy
Having seen The Night House, I second Mr. Dan Murrell's evaluation. Spot on.
You are really only one of two film reviewers whose taste I trust. That being said, your choices were... unexpected. Not a bad thing, just surprising.
For myself, it’s him, Stuckmann, Cosmonaut and The Critical Drinker
@@ed3kzz Good choices. Cosmonaut enjoyed The Last Jedi. He is unbias as it gets. He gains my respect.
Dude I’m so hyped you put Annette on your list! It’s not in my top 10 but I personally really loved it! Easily in my top 20
I love that it was your #1!!!
For me, it just got pushed off my personal top 10 (so #11, or 1st Honorable mention), but is just a strong choice!
More people need to see Tick Tick Boom.
I need to check out Annette. Here are my favorites of 2021:
1. The Velvet Queen [La panthère des neiges]
2. Last Night in Soho
3. Compartment No. 6
4. Spider-Man: No Way Home
5. The French Dispatch
6. Nightmare Alley
7. Licorice Pizza
8. tick, tick… BOOM!
9. The Rescue
10. In the Heights
@@Elwaves2925 I was surprised Dan didn't even mention Last Night in Solo. I think it's Edgar Wright's best movie yet.
Annette shocked me, but I'm loving the fact that you love it so much ❤ so may we start is engraned into my brain permanently. I had a very similar experience with my number one, the french dispatch. And completely get that very few people will love it as much as I do
My top 10 (watched this year, some technically last year):
1. the french dispatch
2. dune
3. spencer
4. Inside
5. The father
6. Tick tick boom
7. Don’t look up
8. A quiet place part II
9. The mitchells vs the machines
10. Annette
I'm thrilled at your no. 1, Dan. Could not agree more.
Same
Got to add few proper movies in my collection, thanks to you Dan 🙏🏽😎
Saw pretty much everything you mentioned Dan!! Thanks for everything this year 🙏
Nearly 20 movies listed and I've heard of 5 and seen 3 of them. Dan and I clearly live in different worlds. :-)
Idk if you saw it but I would love to hear your opinion on Zola! I thought it was great and isn’t getting enough attention
