Making a Tool & Cutter Grinder - Hemingway Kits - Part 1

  • Here I build a tool and cutter grinder using plans and materials from Hemingway Kits.
The sheet metal parts were quite sharp and required a lot of deburring. They are all accurately to dimension and square, though.
The plans are nicely printed on A3 paper, although the dimensions are in imperial - not great for my metric machines. Before starting each part, I converted all the measurements to metric.
I wasn't sure how sturdy it would be, given the many sheet metal parts, but what I've built up to now feels very solid.
Some of the tools I use and would recommend (affiliate links):

I built one of these during Covid lock down. There are a number of improvements that can be made when the assembly is finished.
Have you seen Alan Enots build of this kit? He added a very useful traversing control lever for moving the table left and right whilst grinding a tool.
His mechanism for traversing the table gives much improved control over simply pushing the table to and fro.

Many thanks for the info! I'll have a look at the Alan Enots build - a lever for traversing sounds good - especially with my shaky hands!

Paul,I'm just finding the link to the video now. It is 6 years since Allan built his Worden grinder but quite by coincidence he has just released another video a couple of days ago showing him making an attachment for the Worden to sharpen circular saw blade teeth.

@@PaulsGarageProjects Here is the link to Allan's table traversing pivot lever. This video is part 2 but shows the final assembly and operation of the linkage/lever.

Looks like I'll be making some accessories once the base machine is complete! Have you built any accessories? If so, what are your thoughts on them?

Awesome build. I love seeing work done on Boxford. That’s a real sturdy knurling tool you got. Never seen one like that.

Thanks! For the money, the Boxford is an awesome little lathe. It's a Marlco knurling tool - really solid and the lever to apply pressure is a great feature.

Especially for me - I'm hopeless at sharpening stuff freehand!

Nice. Can't wait to see it finished and in use. When will we get to see the thrilling conclusion?

Thanks! Probably going to be a week or two. Would have been quicker, but I managed to lose my 1/4-40 tap, and one of the pieces of stock was too short.

Yeah, motor comes with the kit, only thing missing is a diamond dresser I think.

It does not look very robust to me

I wasn't sure how sturdy it would be myself, given the number of sheet metal parts, but with the bracing and the thickness of the sheet metal (3mm) it's surprisingly solid.

I have built one of these Worden grinders and can confirm it is very solid and robust when it is all put together and bolted up tight with the reinforcing/stiffening pieces included.
