- In this video I build an adjustable tool rest/platform for the bench grinder. The original tool rest that came with the grinder was almost useless as you could not adjust the height or angle.

Thank you. Yes, probably due to keeping costs down. A stamped single plate would not cost much to produce compared to an adjustable rest.

Someone commenting went on a rant about buying cheap Chinese crap. Fact is,... even the best grinders deserve the features John incorporated here. Since damn near everything we do in our shop requires a sharp edge, .. the time spent fabricating holding, guiding and fencing will reproduce satisfying consistency!

Yes I saw that. Basically the grinder works absolutely fine for sharpening my chisels etc. All it needed was an adjustable table. Maybe that person purchased something in the past that did not work out well for them?

it is chinese junk. ive got an old grinder, probably 50s era. the base on it has a REAL rest. solid lump of cast iron. fully adjustable. even has little water troughs... you cant buy them anymore. everythings this flimsy, standard design, mounted on the pressed steel guard. even the freakin flanges on the spindle are pressed mild steel now, versus this old thing with its chunks of cast iron.
theres a reason some of us go a bit ga ga over old machine tools, from an age when machining was taken seriously...
It's nice to see that someone makes a bench grinder with wheel guards that are thicker than sheet metal.
Yes, I was quite surprised how thick the metal is and how sturdy the guards and cowlings are. I have a smaller (different brand) grinder and the material is quite thin. Thanks for watching.
@@thehobbymachinistnzI've been wanting a better tool rest for a while. I'll probably make one like yours. And if I can get some cheap/free 11 gauge steel I'll make better wheel guards. Anything that bolts to the guards will benefit from them being sturdier. I also like that your guards have welded-in bolts so that you just undo a few nuts. My guards use tiny screws that I'm always dropping. And I'll probably use thumbscrews or knurled nuts there so that I don't need another tool.
@@mk6595 Sounds good. If you cant make the guards stronger, you can always mount the rest to the bench rather than the grinder. You should still get all of the adjustment flexibility if it is bolted to the bench.
VERY NICE! You could make a kit for that and it would sell like crazy. Every shop needs a product!
Yes, that could be done. But, I do have many of projects on the list which I need to do.

Nicely made and looks easy to set-up. I've suffered with the stamped tin rest for years. Ought to follow your example and make a proper rest.

Looked at the other two Matty and Blondihacks turns out your grinder has the same rest as mine l, the only difference i had two bolts instead of a bolt and pin.
I will be copying your rest it looks a sturdy and serviceable piece of Kit.

Done drawings yesterday and decided to get the plates laser cut, i was surprised at how cheap it cost AUS 4.95 and that was for two sets.

One question, i see on the table adjuster you have welded something to one side, what is it.
@@Bigbigjimbo Good spotting. I did not show that on camera, but what I did was weld some small pieces that stop the bolt head from rotating. Otherwise you would need a spanner to hold the bolt head while you tightened and loosened the table pivot lever.

Nice job! I've done a couple of similar but with the sliders mounted to a block on the base rather than brackets off the guard. And a thin table with no slot. I like the slot and might upgrade one or two of them like this.

The groove on the bracket you chucked in the bin, I've always wondered what its purpose was, but as you threw it i thought it is probably for putting drill bits so you can grind the face once set at the right angle.
I think that groove is for sharpening drill bits. The problem is that you could not change the angle of the original tool rest. Although the angle of the groove in the rest may be correct for the point of the drill bit, you really need the ability to grind a back relief from the cutting edge of the drill bit. I plan to make a drill bit sharpening jig for the grinder, along with a video. But that could be a few months away.

Nice job, mate. The extra mass of what you built will help stabilise the action on the wheel, too. Even if the cover it's bolted to is jot particularly rigid. That gun blue works great. I will acquire some for myself. Cheers :-)

Great video ... I am in the process of building such a tool rest myself and this was very valuable information. About the "AEG" grinder... I really hate to tell you this but this grinder doesn't have anything to do with the Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft AG (AEG) of Germany. Electrolux bought the rights to the orl AEG logo and for a decent fee, any company can buy the rights to use the logo from Electrolux. In essnce, this means you are better off with the similar no-brand version, as the manufacturer will usually take shortcuts with branded version to compensate for the licensing fees... (used to work in inbound IPs, so I know how drastic those shortcuts can sometimes be).

Funny you should mention that about AEG. I recall when I was looking for an 8" grinder there were several different brands of this exact same grinder. I thought that AEG were making them for other companies so they could be rebranded. It looks like the case here is that this is a generic grinder where AEG and a bunch of other companies put their own brandings on them. BTW, I only brought the AEG branded grinder because it was about $20 cheaper than the others, plus it had an extended warrantee for 6 years.
@@thehobbymachinistnzThe 6-year warranty is worth a lot! BTW: you can extend the life of the grinder and the quality of the ground surfaces quite a bit when truing the wheels(s) with a diamond every once in a while... some people invest in better bearings and better padding between flanges/washers and the wheel. Everything that reduces vibration has a positive effect on the quality of the ground surfaces. Yes, if its old and made in germany its a good machine, all the new ones are mostly cheap chinese tools

Pretty awesome platform. Did you consider a dovetail for your horizontal sliding angle guide?
Thank you. Yes, I did think about a dovetail, but I don't think it would be useful in this case. The slider just moves from side to side so it does not need to be in a dovetail. A dovetail would just prevent lifting out, but that is not an issue when you are holding the tool that you are sharpening down onto the tool rest.

@@MyMiniHomeWorkshop I have seen that with my videos as well. Something that I thought would get a lot of interest has not a lot of views. Then, some other video goes a bit viral and I don't expect that. I guess the YT algorithm plays a big part in that?

Nice!! Can you paint blued parts?
I don't know. The blued parts have oil on them so that would need to be cleaned off first. You may be better off not bluing and just painting the parts if you want to paint them.
@@thehobbymachinistnzThanks. I wasn't planning to paint but was wondering if chemically, paint will bond to the blued surface as is not a coating but rather a reaction with the underlying metal part.
@@BenMitro Yes, it is a reaction, but I don't know if paint would stick to it or not. It is something that I have not tested. Perhaps someone else reading this may comment?

I got it from Delta Mike Ltd. I am in NZ so you may need to look around if you live elsewhere.

Why isn't this standard on every grinder? Mass produced, this would cost $5.
That is probably the answer. $5 vs 20 cents for the bent piece of panel steel. I would pay $5 more if the same grinder had a decent tool rest. But, maybe a lot of people would go for the cheaper price?
If you have the tools, id take off the stamped steel guard tottaly, and make a whole unit, you can also use a side wheel tool rest on.
The original junk is a cheap knock off of a brand but made in china without any thought for use.
