      Manuel Candelaria Well, that really depends on how you define “production power”. The hardware used at Abbey Road is magnificent and has been replicated by companies like Waves and NI. Surely they don’t come close to the originals. Carrying instruments in your pocket is great, but a sampled Steinway can of course never replace the feeling of playing a real grand piano.

      You may be right but you do need mics, sound cards, controllers, monitors, storage,headphones, and plenty of other gear. The portability thing is not important to everyone producing music. There is also that proprietory thing where Apple makes it impossible for anyone to make a computer that can run IOS. I always hated depending on one company for my life. I always liked that there were so many laptop makers making laptops that run windows. I never owned a Mac but I do have an iPhone and a couple of iPads. I really like the fact that my laptop is not made by Microsoft and that I can buy so many different laptops to run that operating system. iPads are incredible for sure and I will always use one but I will never give up using a windows laptop. Like I always thought, hybrid scenarios are the best for so many reasons. My audio interface has dedicated ports for a iOS device and another for laptop so I can have perfect communication between both. No sensible reason to choose one over the other when using both is so powerful. I can fit my laptop, both iPads, my focusrite 2i4, 2x IK iLoud micro monitors, arturia minilab controller, and a ton of cables and dongles in my backpack. So why do I have to go only with an iOS device for portability. Ok I do have a big backpack but not that big that it looks ridiculous. It's those IK iLouds that are so bloody good and convenient. Another great video by the great Haqmeister. Thanks Jakob with a k. Hey do you know anything about the djtechtools midi fighter twister controller? It's been around for a couple of years and I keep checking but don't see any feedback from IOS guys like you and Doug.

    Another issue which can completely change things is how many apps you have which will run on the older iPad or if they’re even available on the App Store. As another poster has shared, you can begin to look at older iOS devices as if they were more traditional one off hardware synths which you can integrate into a larger setup using mixers, USB audio interfaces and camera connection kits for MIDI. Even the oldest iPads can be used effectively as MIDI controllers or you can route audio from old apps into newer apps using an audio interface or transferring the audio files over to the newer devices. These sorts of use cases are significantly different than the more complete music production usages you discuss in this video.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 років тому

      I agree, but the point of the video was to help out people who are looking to get into iOS music making and getting a budget iPad as their first device. This is what beginners usually are asking me about. I still use my older devices too in the manner you talk about.
      I mean an iPad mini 1 is still very useful. However beginners usually want something to base their setup around and so that first device needs to be more powerful. 👍🏼

    • @plucollective604
      @plucollective604 5 років тому

      Jakob Haq yes people deciding to use their older devices or to buy older devices is a very different usage than someone getting their first iOS device for music production. One of the biggest differences is the availability of older apps you’ve purchased and being to use an older version of the app on older devices. The 32 bit app purge continues to have a significant impact on the ability to even use older devices. In addition, the more recent versions of iTunes has impacted the ability to backup and restore apps. These two moves by Apple along with the inability to roll back to an earlier version of iOS is part of the ratcheting process by Apple to encourage people to update to the most recent version of iOS and to use more recent iOS devices for compatibility reasons which are above and beyond the power of a given iOS device. For example, the most recent version of iOS which runs on an iPad 2 significantly impacted its performance versus the previous major iOS release. Users deciding to buy used iOS devices will definitely need to learn about the performance of their older used iOS device (as you’ve alluded to in your video) before updating to a new major release of an iOS and make sure they get the last version of an iOS that works well for their usage cases as that is usually the version developers will continue to support the longest. Supporting multiple versions of iOS can be very impractical and unsustainable for developers so users getting older devices will also be impacted by this issue as well.

  • @valley_robot
    @valley_robot 5 років тому +2

    Ok , here’s a tip that you will all find helpful , if you have an iPad 2 or iPad mini you will get problems installing the latest versions of iOS music apps , it will say your device is not compatible ,find someone who has a later model or even an iPhone and ask them to download the software you need on their device, then log in to your older device with your friends account, go to my apps in the App Store and it will list all the apps that your friend has ,including the software that apple told you is not compatible with your device, click download ,it will say the latest version of this app is not compatible with your device,and download an older version to your iPad. Older versions work just fine

    I started with an iPad 3rd gen (2012), bu it was only 32 bit, so wouldn't run some things that I wanted. I upgraded very cheaply to an iPad Air 2 (2014), and that still works Ok for me. I might need to replace it at some point, but for many musicians, an iPad Air is probably still adequate.
    I would definitely say to get a 256Gb model, as music apps will quickly fill up the storage on the smaller models, which is a nuisance.
    Of course, if you have the budget or are a heavy user, than getting a new one makes some sense, as the price difference between older and brand new ones is not really all that much.

  • @AndyChannelle

    Great advice. I think it changes if you already have a main device and you just want to run a couple of synths, possibly controlled with a midi controller, you could go for an older device. But you could also get a new iPod touch for £199 or so that will run stuff for the next 7 years. I have an iPad Pro for running the big stuff, and an older mini to run a couple of synths though AUM.

    I always buy an entry level iPad, keep it for five years, rinse repeat. I find I still get about 50% of what I paid for it, which I think is crazy considering how tired they are by this age. But since I can run any App I want on an ordinary iPad, there's no incentive for me to pay 3x as much for a Pro model.

    You really help people get into the truly productive side of iOS my man,your videos are all aces and extremely helpful.
    I have also been on the iOS music production train for almost 3 years now with an Air2.
    This thing still rocks 25 audio tracks inside Cubasis and it’s still ready for some mixing with AU plugins.To avoid GPU crashes I freeze a lot,work with AU plugins in stages,then freeze and proceed with more.
    My goal was to go full production with an iPad,due to day job ,kids and less time,but luckily my day job allows it(when working night shifts and begin the shift boss 😂) ,so I could go with something mobile,because music is my damn life,I will die if I stop doing it😂
    So now,it’s usually me,my Air2,my Akai ABTS 28 speaker,my AKG K100’s and the night shift!!!😂😂😂Family deserves all the time left 😉
    I use an analogy of 85\15 of Cubasis/Logic Pro today,where I would normally do nothing if I didn’t have the iPad,cause my new home don’t have the room I need for my studio gear.
    Lately I even finished some tracks on Final Touch(Positive Grid) and I can say a 100% is possible.I would still maybe prefer to sit on Logic and my monitors,but it can be really done,because the tools are getting extremely awesome.
    I only lately discovered the ProQ2 for the iPad,I also have it on Mac,but damn,ITS THE SAME AWESOMENESS.If the rest Fabfilters(mostly ProL for me) come along,then I think i have reached 100%
    It is exactly like you said.If your passion is to make music and you have an iDevice,just open it and begin doing stuff.Start from GarageBand,it’s free in there.We begun composing in a chucky Roland MC-307 for God’s shake 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
    Again thank u Jakob,you’re just the best in this man.👊🏼

    I have four iPads. My first one was the iPad three and I only bought it because when the iPad fours were out nothing was available for the lightning cable and everything was the 30 pin. Then I updated to an iPad mini retina and still had to deal with adapters for lightning cables and obviously have upgraded to more iPads sense but I still have use for my iPad three and there are a lot of apps that still run on it.
    I have no problem using Loopy HD or sunrise or on the iPad three as they run good still. I don’t always rock the old iPads but in my opinion it’s worth more to me loaded with 75 or so audio apps not including many I beta test.
    I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy one but it’s worth it for me to keep it as I have a lot of money invested in apps and I like to still be able to open up a bunch of iOS devices and fuck around with Bluetooth, virtual, and wired midi within my studio set up at home and even on the go.
    Now my first iPhone was the iPhone 4 and I beta tested a shit ton of apps on that to the battery life is amazing on it but I never use it except maybe to stream Pandora or Use an old video app that hasn’t been updated or audio app that hasn’t been updated. I still have a 5S, a 6S, and I use my mothers 5C, and her SE along with my iPhone X. I just even have a lot of old max that you can still use for certain things and while I love the new technology unless something is completely use an old video app that hasn’t been updated or audio app that hasn’t been updated. I still have a 5S, a 6S, and I use my mothers 5C, and her SE along with my iPhone X. I just even have a lot of old max that you can still use for certain things and while I love new technology unless something is completely dead and on able to be used I’m not going to sell it for 50 bucks when it’s worth the $50 for me just to have access to a few drum machines and a sample run.
    But I get where you’re coming from and I wouldn’t buy anything older than an iPad Mini retina to or an iPad five at this point. But I love all your fucking reviews as we have most of the same software, hardware, and apps and it’s nice to relate to someone who pretty much thinks the same. This was speech to text so pardon my grammar but I am a gear freak and I just love having more than what I need because of friends come over and they want to jam I always have something for someone to use.

      That’s a good idea. The only thing you need to consider in that case is that some apps aren’t available for iPhone. For instance, the FabFilter plugins only exist for iPad. I also went for an older model when getting the new iPad I now use. It’s an iPad 11” from 2018. I basically used a Swedish Auction site, for used gear, to get one for the low price of $500 (5000 swedish kronas). The site has the ability to track new adds based on keywords and so I was tracking every new add with the words “iPad Pro” in it for months. Suddenly one day, this one popped up and I just snatched it instantly. Patience can take you a long way. Good luck on hunting your next iOS Device! 👊🏼

The most used tool I have over here apart from my iPad Pro is the iPhone 6s that have been my workhorse for a lot of years. I really don’t want it not to be able to run the next version of iOS. The lack of headphone jack is why I haven’t bought a New iPad Pro yet. I actually talked with a Apple employee who works in development on a flight and I discussed the lack of headphone jacks and how it cripples music production and he basically said “we don’t care”, “the iPad isn’t designed for the musician in mind. The main push is for the average consumer, not niche markets.”
      My response was, then stop calling it an iPad Pro if it’s not meant for professional tasks!
      He didn’t talk to me the rest of the flight and I just continued “fingering my stuff”! I sooooo wanted to show him your Apple dongle video but didn’t have WiFi on the flight! Hahaha!

    2022 update, if you have a chance to grab anything with a nice Bat, i.e. refurbished for well below half the price of a iPad2020, go for it. Otherwise just go for the iPad2020, It has the headphone port, and so you have an analog out and a charge port without any dongles.
    Any bluetooth dongle plugged into anything with midi in and out will give you a $50 wireless controller. Simple and minimal cheap.
    I have 3 , an iPad4 still has a decent bat / iPad Air2 has half the bat as the iPad4 at a higher price/ and an iPad 2020 cheapo version 127gb. The old iPads prior to 2017 struggle or can’t use new apps and certainly not the new ios.
    Old ipads still work for sampling and sample management and can mostly handle all the old synths but as he mentions they have forced the old 32 bit apps off the store so….
    The 2017 iPad / iPad air2 is used side by side with the 2020 I USUALLY only sample INTO it. Sampling is fine even on the oldest one, and honestly I can’t use three at a time, well I can but I dont. They all work smooth with airdrop.
    I SUGGEST YOU ONLY BUY THE iPad 2020 and newer as of 2022 because it is super affordable. You REALLLLLY should aim for the devices with the headphone jack, otherwise you need a dongle just to be able to charge while using LATENCY FREE headphones. That said, the USB C is a nice addition, although not for me because I have so much lightning cable investments such as my audio4+ (Its old too and not sold no more ….. but I love it. )

    Jakob, I know this video is old but my question is related to it. I noticed you like ipad minis and ipads with headphone jacks and we share the same sentiment since mobility is one of the main reasons for getting an ipad and having to lug around an audio interface everywhere makes it less portable.
    Now to my question. Now in 2020, would you choose an ipad 8 over the mini? Being just as powerful as each other, based on size alone... Is the mini limiting when trying to twist knobs in synths or is it generally very useable? I do like the portability and betterscreen of the mini vs the 8 but was only concerned about the useability factor for using music apps.

    I am happy with my old original iPad Pro 12.9(lightning and headphone jack) and my Air 2. If I want to run a lot of apps in AUM I run sequencers on my iPhone 7 Plus or the air 2 and send the midi to the iPad Pro using Bluetooth with the midifire app. I love the midifire app. It is brilliant for routing midi and has full StreamByter app built in plus other very cool thingies. There is no limit on what you can do with midi and no noticeable latency and doesn’t crash(extremely rarely). I want headphone jacks but am wondering if there are hubs that make a USB-c port handle it all just fine. I have a good laptop that I connect a lot using one USB-c port with hub having tons of ports with no problem. I use the USB 3 ports for my wireless mouse and internet is connected wired by the Ethernet port. I am a wired internet lover. Wifi is slower and less reliable. I will get a new iPad when Apple decides to stop playing games and puts out a real powerhouse, i mean the powerhouse that they can make but do, it want to. If they do it then it will mean people will stick with it longer. That’s why they only do small upgrades. It means way more sales. Understandable, but very frustrating.

    Might I add this nugget of wisdom: buy what you can afford and need *today*. Ipads get cheaper slowly, then drop of a lot, then they stabilize (sanjaymeena.io/images/posts/books/non_linear_laws/s-curve.png ). So watch the prices and see when the drop starts. They usually start when a new ipad is introduced. Get your gear at some point after the first drop, but before the lower plateau, so you may be able to sell it later on. Also: try to get and keep the original charger, cable, box and stuff. helps in resale value. Finally: try to keep it scratchfree.

I’m deciding whether to get an older model as entry to iOS music making...Regarding the lightning connection situation compared to a usb c connection, is the only drawback just the inconvenience of having to use the additional lightning to usb converter? or does it have any other effects on playback sound quality or production performance in general, compared to having a direct usb c connection on the iPad? Thanks!!

    • @niallnom

      I’m not sure and I don’t like to speculate. When it comes to upgrading; I have always recommended not updating early because of how stuff always break with new iOS versions. It’s a never ending story. People update early and then there are months and months of bug reports from users. I always wait quite a bit (months) before even considering an update. You have to ask yourself this. Do you need the new update now with a risk that your rig becomes unstable? Since I work with my rig everyday I can’t afford having important apps glitch out on me due to a shoddy update (this has happened to me before).

    • @JakobHaq

      An iPad can last you a long time. I still have older devices that I use. Sure some of them are so old now that they won’t take the newer iOS versions. I still use an iPad Pro from 2015 (now 6 years old) will be able to run the latest iOS 15 when it comes out. And I’m pretty certain it’ll be able to run some later versions too.
      .
      And get even when an iDevice gets really old, one can still use it for stuff. The oldest device I have is an iPad mini 1 (2012) and I still use it for stuff like live performance etc. It’s slow yeah but I can easily run lighter apps on it (I don’t recommend getting something this old however).

While using Patterning 2 i had a ultra simple Kick-Snare loop sample that was a bit off kilter , meaning it was obviously made for another Tempo than my project. I then realised i can`t find any option to edit the Sample in Patterning other than shortening it basically. I need your opinion on whhich app can i use in order to: Import a sample-> Edit+Quantize it if needed-> export it easily (or at all). I am overwhelmed by all the apps and can`t literally remember which-if any can do this . Like Set Quantize a beat and then bounce it to a new edited loop. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Why buying a Air 2 when you can have a new iPad 2018 for less?

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 років тому +2

      The point of this video has to do with shopping older iPads on a budget. The older models are less expensive (at least over here). An iPad Air 2 2018 64GB can be purchased at around $220-$250 in my area while the iPad 6th 2018 32GB model costs $300-$350. So if you’re one a budget and is looking for an iDevice that is powerful with the most storage space then the iPad Air 2 is a really good option. Plus you get double the storage space which is preferable when doin creative work. The biggest difference between two is that the iPad 6th 2018 model has a quad core CPU at 2.34GHz, whereas the iPad Air 2 2014 has a triple core CPU at 1.5GHz. Other than that they have almost the same specs wen it comes to ram, screen size, resolution, connection ports, cameras (front and back) etc.
