Regular Content will resume tomorrow, I'm a little bogged down with the Quad Cortex Review.
About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Hey everyone! Hope people get a lot out of this video. Thanks again Glenn for putting this out here. Apologies for the dust in some of the shots - we do keep the studio clean but we have 2 dogs here that sometimes run rampant!
Would you have a guide in on how the iPad can be used in a show setting?
This is great! Thank you very much. I suggest you trade the dogs in for cats though. Less dust! ;-) I'm still running on an old iPad. Budget things, doncha know?!
Thanks! This was very helpful.
I'd watched someone complain about all the iPad interfaces he'd bought that no longer work (thanks apple) - and had given up on the iPad idea. However, using a non-iOS specific interface seems to make sense. Thanks for planting the seed and showing the common pitfalls!
I’m sure you’re aware but there’s inexpensive, good quality power banks that do 12v so can charge a MacBook on the go. Less faffin around with additional weird expensive adaptors.
Cool video Adam and Glenn ! As always it was fun to watch. Adam check also "Auria" on iPad.
Finally something for the small guys
My drummer is asking if he can use the IPAD to practice as a pad.
aaaaaand... too late
Yes u really can
Just smash it bro
as long as he uses his stick
@@camdendebruin6667 😂😂😂
Excellent video and really helps me feel like I'm on the right track. Thank you Adam, and thank you Glenn for having him on the channel!
yes, that’s challenging, never tried that. so let’s watch, thank you in advance!
Adam is a great teacher! Amazing what you can do with an iPad. Cheers Glenn!!
Excellent Video Glenn and thank you Adam!✊🏾
Glenn, I have a feeling this is going to be one of your more popular videos!
Great video, we release weekly tutorials about producing music on Cubasis on the iPad so we really enjoyed this video!
This is awesome! I was the one who asked about this in the discord! Will be great to improve my iPad setup with this video.
Excellent presentation. Thanks!
Holy shot this is the earliest I’ve caught one of your videos!
🤘
I know already your channel but thks for the iPad infos and big thks for showing me the evo8! audient is starting to be my favourite brand!
Very helpful video. Thank you!
I've been using a similar setup for a few years now with a 2i2! I use a 12 volt apple brick style charger & that saves the drop of the "mess of cables" & easily powers my interface!
My guitar teacher just asked me to try and set something up like this on my iPad thanks glen
I was trying to sell my Evo 8 cause of the lack of power but you've shown me the way, thanks!!
There are interfaces that connect direct to lightning which would help relieve some of the messy cable management. Apogee makes some really high quality stuff.
Also with Bias, JamUp and few other Amp modelers for iOS you can get some killer tones.
Def use an official Apple camera connector! Very helpful video, thanks!!
The TC Helicon Go Twin interface uses 2 AA batteries to power itself in iOS, there's some incredible guitar effects from their Pedal Board app as well... No noise, available in Garage Band, etc etc
I have an old iPad 4th generation. I use an iRig Pro that holds a 9 volt battery. Got me a small set of headphones too. I just need a little midi keyboard and I'm good to go at the cottage. The iRig lets my plug in a guitar or a microphone and since it has a 9 volt, it even supplies phantom power so I can use one of my condenser mikes that require it. I also have Korg Gadget on the iPad and with the Audiobus app, I can interconnect everything and rock out. Got me toys! Got me wife! Got me whisky and beer! All at the cottage. Life is good. Well, it would be better without covid.
I've got the Scarlett Focusrite interface which works fine with my desktop Mac. Will it work with my Ipad pro 12? I plug the Focusrite into my mac via the USB-A port. So what's the best hub for me to get to enable me to plug it into my Ipad? Also, since my Focusrite is powered by AC will I be good to go by just plugging my mic into my Focusrite and then my Focusrite into my Ipad? Gosh this is complicated!
Haven’t even watched yet but ...Thank You So much 👍
THANKS SO MUSCH GLEN
If you decide to give this set-up a try on a lightning port iPad, you'll need to get the official Apple Lightning to USB3 camera adapter. The inexpensive ones tend to be identified as unsupported devices when plugging into the iPad. One that I tried also only sent audio out from the iPad and would not input audio.
Love this. Hello my name is Mike and I’m an appoholic. I love my iPad Pro 2nd generation. I’m using the Alesis iO Dock ll. It charges the iPad while in use. I hate dongles. The Peavey AmpKit HD works too. It also charges the iPad when in use. As long as you get the power supply for it.
This is great.
I use an iPad pro as my pedalboard and seeing this helps to see how i can demo things
been recording 18 channels straight into my Samsung Galaxy S7 for few years now. Very handy for doing live recordings.
I have an s10+... might have to give that a try sometime.
This is a great video . I use my iPad pro with garage band but I would rather upgrade to this ! Ty
Lead guitar at the end was the best part!!
I have an Apogee Jam 96k which I use sometimes to record rough demos or ideas on my iPhone. Works fairly well. But I gotta say, it might be a psychosomatic thing, but I feel better when recording on my laptop lol
I tried connecting the Scarlet 2i2 to a Samsung A50 and I had the same power drop problem when recording or turning on the 48v. The powered usb hub is a cool idea actually!
Hi Glen. I would like to know your take on masters with clients. Do you give them the masters or keep them because technicaly the masters are your body of work. Ty.
That iPad cover has seen better days!
I’ve been using a PreSonus AudioBox iOne straight into the IPad. Using Garage Band for a few years.
This sounds better than a lot of underground 80s record.
Sick
Very handy, I just happen to be assembling asetup like this for recording our jams. I have a Scarlett Solo Gen3 kicking around and it's class compliant, now I need to get a powered USB hub and official Lightning-to-USB C adapter. we'll use an Iphone and an SM58 or two, nothing fancy. just wanna get better jam recordings.
I thought all the ipad pros were type C from 2018 onwards?
Nice Bacon Strips in the Bidak! I see you my dude!
I connectivity audio4+ is a good unit for the ipad. you can connect a computer and and ipad at the same time to the unit. audio pass thru between the computer and the ipad.
It’s dongle time!!!
Is this SMG or hop pole... I’m so cornfused right now... Adam should yell more if he’s over here!( unless his kid is sleeping)
HEYYYY
@@adamsteelproducer when is Glenn going to take over your channel 🤣
When I saw the running time on the video I wondered if Glenn's voice could take 26:31 mn of screaming!!!!!!
MIght be a stupid question, but where did your sound come from, while you where recording? does the sound come from the iPad to the interface and from there to some monitors or sth? Not quite sure how that works rn. 🤔
"Or my favorite.....you know."
We know.
Reaper is awesome!!
This question Is not related to the video but, in some videos about demos sometimes a guitar with P90 Pickups Is played, I Guess that Is a Yamaha AND sounds so good, so do you know the name or brand of those P90 Pickups?
Gleeeeeennnnnnn
Thank God for my iPad Pro with USB C
So if the iPad has a USB C, I wouldn’t need the extra usb port connector?
I'd love to see a similar video on doing this with Android. I know that there are DAW's for Android, and one of them also runs on iOS (Audio Evolution).
Dude, I didn't know who this Adam guy is, but you look exactly like a hippy guy who used to own a local music store who sold me a Peavey bass chorus pedal.
13:00 can you tell me why your studio lights cause more noise?
more videos from reaper daddy!
I’m also using Cubasis 3, very similar setup but I’m going direct into it with my axe fx FM3 but I can’t get rid of the latency
focusrite makes a audio interface that can be used with a ipad. its called itrack solo i beleive
Can I use my focusrite 4i4 3rd Gen?
Anyone know what tuning this is? Those openish chords sound awesome
I'mma try recording in jungle during covid with ipad then
Ipad pro2020 work fine with behringer XR18 recording 18 track at the same time. Line6 helix work as well.
Nice focused lighting on your intro.
Ty!
Wow it works on my old PV06.
@Hop Pole Studios What would be the difference in sound quality if you plugged the guitar directly into the audio interface without the DI box?
I've got an MOTU M2 audio interface which I use with my iPad and BIAS FX 2 amp/effect modeling software, and I'm wondering if it would be worth it to insert a DI box between the guitar and M2? What are the benefits?
@@gabrielborges9438 I'm confused--that sounds the same as the gain knob on the input pre-amp of the M2? I think I must be missing something?
better of using a normal laptop , but the mixing desk part of the software , look cool on touch screan , am thinking to get a touch screen monitor for that at some point a ultra wild will be nice , just above the keybord on the desk ,
I own an iPad pro 2020, gonna try and record something
What is the software called?
All I use is an interface and my iPhone to record. A little challenging but it works.
Hey! I’m wondering if it’s possible to track like 8 channels simultaneously for live drum on cubasis le 3… anyone have this information?
Where’s all the links to the gear & accessories you’re using?
Can you use Superior Drummer 3 on the IPad for your drum track into Cubase?!?!?!?! 2TB IPad Pro would probably be ideal?
I love this concept, but can't help but feel like most people who have a laptop... this wouldn't really apply. I mean, my laptop and a decent USB interface can do the same job. Still, for anyone whose only portable computing solution is a tablet, this is fantastic info to have and I'm glad it's out there. Kind of makes me want to buy an iPad to experiment with a setup like this.
I also think this video is a real testament to how home recording has been revolutionized in the past 20 years. I mean, with little more than my iPhone and an iRig 2, I was able to put together pretty decent demos that would've taken a lot more equipment and work when I was a kid and that tech didn't exist. The fact that you can make some pretty damn decent productions on less and less studio equipment is fucking unreal to me still and I love it.
Does Anyone know of i can use all Inputs at the Same time???
Reports say the 3&4 outputs done work with the evo 8 or 16. Can anyone confirm?
Havent watched yet but seeing the title makes me really wish I had a better setup for recording. I’m using an iRig into an iPhone 7 with GarageBand. Sad, I know.
I wish you guys would have addressed the disadvantages to iPad DAWs vs a desktop PC or Mac.
They aren’t necessarily equal by any means.
I'll try with my kindle fire😅
70 year old guy with MOP hair. Really Fly
Omg!!! A Bad News tshirt
That’s a lot of cables...get a Roland Rubix 24 audio interface. Has separate USBs for data and power, so you wouldn’t need the hub to power the unit. Works perfect on the move, whether wall powered or with battery packs.
true, there are interfaces like that - I just didn't have one to hand. Also I wanted to walk through the worst case scenario
Why don't use the apogee duet? Or the focusrite? Not need of all those cables!! And Auria is better to record and management of all audio apps...
Um, you ,are a nightmare setup. You take that with you? No fing way
I've tried it before and it was fun but cubasis 3 was pretty buggy at the time. Ok, hear me out.. instead of an ipad pro you could just buy a surface pro 7 or something, which is about the same price, size and is also a tablet. AND you could run any daw with basically any plugin you'd want.
Edit: I just went for these "tablet" solutions because I also like to draw.. otherwise I'd get just a laptop with a better processor and more ram. Tablets just don't have the juice to go crazy with plugins.
Cubasis 3 is still buggy as all hell. I use Nano Studio 2 for midi and Auria Pro for Audio and mixing
I played guitar forever and used Ernie Ball strings on all my axes . Since switching to bass I've noticed on my Ibanez Daddarios are best but they are squeaky and noisy on my P Bass. The Fenders P and J like Boomers . My Hellraiser responseds best to Ernie Balls . Has anyone else noticed this ?????
Bad News!!!! I was at their infamous Donington appearance and I thought it was hilarious. My co audience members not so much.
At the 5 minute mark, you mention that your Evo 8 cannot be plugged directly into the iPad Pro, u get a message saying the iPad doesn’t have enough power for the Evo 8. You mentioned that u have the earliest version of iPad Pro. I have a 2018 iPad Pro, and an Evo 8, and I have no such problems. I plug my Evo 8 directly into my iPad using the included USB c cable and have had no problems whatsoever. Hopefully this helps out some people who may be in the market for this equipment.
Video starts at 2:31
How the hell do I do a cover? I plug my guitar into my Scarlett interface with reaper and I do the tone and all that shit and I play the song. I put one track to the left and right for the guitar. But for some reason it sounds like my guitar track is just slapped onto the original track no matter how much I adjust the audio.
So my question is, is it something I’m doing wrong, or should redo the entire song from the ground up, like record guitar, bass, program the drums realistically, and add the vocal track? Idk Glenn this shits so confusing and it makes me wanna quit like a lil bitch lol
Cheers from Philly
I record ideas on my iPad Pro 2020 into Cubasis 3...... export those ideas into Cubase Pro 11.....
lol this set up is overkill for one person, just need a Scarlett solo 3rd gen works great with a mic and a di’d instrument no usb psu junk or extra di box. The only instance you would need a DI box is for the outputs if your running the interface to FOH board - this would only protect the interface from getting fried
Thanks for the tutorial, even an old fart like me can understand this. 🤘
jesus man just get the focusrite iTrack dock!!
*Plot twist: iPads can be connected to iMacs and used as audio interfaces with their own microphones.*
Concrete blocks can also be connected to people so you sink better in water.
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should! 😆
The same plug-ins are 10th of the price on the iPad,
your bass so cute.
You may have already covered this, Chief.
I tried this; high hopes!
Brand NEW iOS iPad Pro, etc. Just fine.
UNTIL, the app producers’ apps are screwed out of reality by a fucking iOS operating system update.
So, fuck that idea.
Back to PCs.
Why not use a laptop? I get the idea of recording with a cellphone, but I would rather prefer using a laptop over an iPad...
It’s the touchscreen. Also there are a lot of audio units (Auv3) that only exist on iPad. Some really cool stuff that utilizes the touchscreen in ways you don’t get on standard PC plugins. Plus the prices of these apps are a fraction of what you pay with PC plugins. Even companies like Waves and Fabfilter offer 1:1 versions of their plugins on iOS for 1/5 the price.
There is a weir echo in the left ear.
For informational purposes, this is a good tutorial. But...based on how much an iPad Pro is vs a MacBook Air......seems to me like it fails the convenience test. Not hating, just a personal observation.
Any iPad Pro from 2018 or later powers this Evo 8 with no problem. That’s what I have and I can plug the Evo directly into the iPad Pro with no problem. Not near as difficult as in this example.
I like apples..but i couldn't eat a whole one🍏🍎
This look like a mess, but it's the right setup for someone
It looks messy in this context but I have my iPad recording setup on a full desk with a Bluetooth keyboard and HDMI output to be able to use a monitor screen. It’s a pretty good workflow comparable to a MacBook docking setup.
I like chicken sausages.
NOBODYY'S RE3A1......
Good to know, but ultimately impractical. Apple's development of the iPad line is just not really the optimal choice when it comes to a mobile platform you can record and mix audio with. I'd rather get a Surface, which pretty much always comes with a keyboard that you have an option to remove, and use standard USB for a wider selection of compatible interfaces for basically the same cost and reduced cable clutter... while still running on battery. Even Lenovo laptops are pretty good in this regard as you can just flip them, use the touch screen and your off to the races with reduced hassle.
Throw it away 😂
Cool, but I still don’t understand how to record and actually use the software. He knows a lot about everything , I can’t even do the basics. Just record a track
