They are amazingly fun.
It is important to note, you may not have noticed there are huge luggage compartments behind each seat. Storage space is far more than one would expect.
You also forgot to mention that it has a backup camera!
They're more practical than a motorcycle, but of course not as much as a car. But they're WAY more fun.

I stopped paying attention to the DougScore after a while. Cars should be celebrated and/or respected by what they are intended to do, and whether each one suits its intended purpose well. Marking the qualities anathema to the car's purpose just seems to unnecessarily highlight its bad points, like how "practicality" causes naturally impractical cars to score low in the DougScore.
@@fancyyahoo yeah true and none of the cars he reviews or will review in the future will get to 80 or more, the highest is like 72 or 73 from the Chiron or 918 Spyder I think and those cars purpose is performance and speed and they get low on practicality..
@@ironboyjunior8509 and strangely enough, only those cars which provide the most performance, are most expensive, as well as the most exotic and most impractical somehow get the best DougScores, which also shows how it simply isn't objective in nature, and reflects purely Doug's own opinions. But then his other viewers will surely treat those scores as "Gospel preached by Daddy Doug" (I used to do that when I was a teen, two to three years ago, as well, not espousing them but thinking that they were according to how capable the car is).
@@fancyyahoo yeah true and I think he should make separate scores for performance cars (sports cars and super cars) and a separate score for the more practical and everyday cars (sedans/SUVs/coupes/luxury cars) where their purpose is different to the performance, I feel like the scores for the different types of cars will fit in more. And you're right, the "Doug Score" is just based on Doug's opinions, and people obviously have different opinions and sometimes I disagree with them, but I am still always interested in the quirks and features of the cars he reviews.

Put the windshield down on my CJ5 and made it about 1/4 mile down the road before I stopped and put it back up (see look on Doug's face for the reason)

You see these a lot in the summer in Times Sq usually in large groups riding along with motorcycles. They are tricked out and have music blasting from custom speakers trying to flex. Great video Doug!
A lot more fun than it looks like. I've always ridden motorcycles, and still found this a ton of fun! Sounds great and rear wheel will squeel when shifting in 2nd gear.

On the topic of the speedometer: it can be electronically switched between displaying speed in mph or kph, hence the seemingly large scale. The old Victory motorcycles, and the new Indian motorcycles, (both brands also owned by Polaris,) had the same speedometer function.
interesting review especially looking to the quirky world of car/motorcycle cross vehicles, as a motorcyclist I could see numerous quirks from the moto world in it such as no headlight switches, the motorcycle license plate attachment, and the belt drive. Really surprised Doug didn't cover the belt drive

all 'motorcycles' must have headlights illuminated at all times while operating on a public roadway to make them more noticeable to other drivers. That's why there isn't a light switch on this.
From the interior, for some reason it looks like it's a huge, high-end golf cart. I actually love the golf carts' design, with smaller wheels and an open cabin with or without a roof, but I think it's cool they carried parts of that over to cars.

i love your videos, however, i have rented a slingshot for a couple days and absolutely loved it. I would love to drive this everyday if the weather was nice. also i dont know if the newer model has more weight but the one i rented did not have a stereo system and just had a ridiculous amount of power and was extremely fast. Highly recommend renting this vehicle just to experience how amazing and fun it really is.

I used to have one of these, had to sell it when I got my first car. Sure do miss it, lots of fun.
There are also a lot of Polaris “vehicles” in Edmonton, Alberta, which, in spite of being a winter city, has loads of wealthy car buyers who love to drive convertibles in the summer. You should see the cars trolling our busier streets on warm July evenings.

But it is the sort of vehicle that will draw attention so for the attention seekers, here's your car.
I have a motorcycle and a Slingshot, this to me is like a go cart, i love driving it.
As someone who rides motorcycles, and currently owns multiple cars..... I LOVE the Slingshot. It is neither of those things, and is definitely a different experience. Like "S V 1" said, it is more like a road legal go cart. It also gets WAY MORE attention than any motorcycle will get, so for people who like that attention, or introduction into a conversation, it is an added plus.
It is from Polaris, so it is a toy... and it is a great toy, at that.

Besides just lost a friend A month ago while he was driving his Harley Davison motorcycle someone hit him took both of his legs off end up dying. And on top of that his friend heard about the accident jumped on his motorcycle and went to the scene, and he got hit at the same spot and he die same day . So it’s something about that intersection .

I grew up riding ATVs, dirt-bikes, etc. and the lightning symbol for the starter button is paying homage to Polaris roots because that is the symbol used on their off-road vehicles to start them. It is a lightning bolt indicating it is electric start because most quads and dirt-bikes you have to manually start with a kick-start.
I recently purchased a 2007 Saturn Sky base with the same engine. Agree with what Doug says about the engine. Not a "thrilling" car but a SUPER fun Roadster experience. I am considering, eventually, strapping a supercharger kit onto it, as my understanding it's the 2.4 it's better stored for that over a turbo. We'll see. I used to daily drive a C5 Z06 and THAT was thrilling. A bit unhinged, actually. This is more reserved, but very fun. Similar experience to the Fiero GT I got when I turned sixteen.
Fun fact: DF Kit Cars, the company that makes the DF Goblin, released a 4 wheel conversion kit for the slingshot! It converts the belt driven rear wheel with a diff and axle.
So it becomes a KTM X-bow basically

Bingo.....I have a victory motorcycle also built by Polaris. And when you switch from MPH to KPH the needle adjusts.......I assume it's the same on the slingshot

@@teancoffee208 An autocycle is safer than a motorcycle because, while little, you do have crash protect. In the front you have the engine, and you have walls on the side, and suspension and stuff in the rear. So yes, this is in fact safer than a motorcycle
@@teancoffee208 Definitely is safer, in comparison for a regular bike you are the crumple zone whereas you still have a seat-belt and room infront of you to take the brunt of a crash.

I believe the "optimistic" speedometer has a dual use for kph, hence the large scale. Same speedo with different gearing and you can sell it in Canada. Very practical.

I have Victory motorcycle, also by Polaris, and can confirm same speedometer scale for US and Canadian market; you can switch MPH to KPH in the menu.

As a 2016 Slingshot SL owner, I've waited a while for your review. Very accurate, even if a little brief. I did not know about the Volvo turn signal. I believe you were very kind about the steering, as the steering is generally loose and the brakes are usually soft. Much like old 60's roadsters and perhaps just as bumpy on the ride. Of course, you can upgrade these to suit your tastes. You probably got a better acceleration from your review car as it had a cold air intake, which changes throttle response greatly. It improved response so much on the 2016, I almost did not upgrade the exhaust. Remapping the computer is not simple, as you have to send it off, or maybe shops exist now. The empty switches above the traction control switch are easy to pop out and replace for your own accessories. I have my amps and bling lighting setup in such a way. The stock seats are uncomfortable as all hell after a 300 mile drive, BUT they are indestructible, and VERY dog friendly. A tall windshield is nearly a must-have and if you live in a place with much sun, one of the add-on roofs is worth the cost. Even with the roof, you will burn your ass on the seat, and if you replaced your gearshift knob with a steel version, you will burn your hand. Speaking of the stock seat again: it's designed to drain water, although you won't like this so much if you are driving while this is happening. You take more rain in the face than you do on a motorcycle, which is rather odd, and you also take rocks to the face, as you would normally take rocks to the legs on a motorcycle. The windshield is a must, but a good pair of sunglasses and goggles are essential. Another oddity that might have been great to cover: the battery. It's in the worst location possible, behind the driver storage compartment, next to the rear wheel. Many people add battery terminal extenders so you can jump start from the storage compartment as it's not exactly fun to take the battery out. Due to the always-on headlights, there is always a chance you will have a run-down. Many people elect to mod the headlights to a switch, which seems like a reasonable thing to do.
Finally, the optimistic speedometer: they do make a LS3 conversion for the slingshot. They also make a two-wheel rear conversion. Should these mods be performed, the speedometer isn't quite so funny... not that anyone would dare look at it due to the fear of mortal peril as you step on the gas. I would love to see a review of those mods, the comedy would be priceless.

In Valdez, Alaska last summer I encountered a couple, both in their eighties, who had traveled in their Slingshot all the way from CO, WY or MT - can't remember which. He was a former motorcycle enthusiast who has developed balance issues and moved to the Slingshot for safety. She was his new bride of 2 years (IIRC), a former teacher (or, professor, perhaps) with a real sense of adventure (as is clear from both the Slingshot and the new husband who drives it). Good living.
Thanks much for doing this review. I live in Florida so I occasionally see them around. I've never had a chance to look at one close up. It kind of reminds me of a "contemporary" dune buggy. I can kinda see the batman mask wearing thing because especially at 14:50 at that front end angle it really does have that Batmobile look... just a shorter version. :-)
