Always had good luck with the old American made Old Timer knives. Got one of their newer ones (China) but haven’t used it any as I don’t hunt anymore. It came sharp. I barely touched the blade and it cut me fairly good. The Old Timer was always the better knife of the two. My old one, which I don’t have anymore unfortunately, used to go through several animals without sharpening. It held a great edge.
Schrade old-timer knives have been using Delrin handle on their knives for years. I have a schrade pocket knife from my kid years made in USA that still works great. That handle material holds up. Stay safe and keep all your fingers intact. Lol
Knives are kind of a funny thing. Economical imported using knives are are everywhere in quantity these days. Over priced high quality ones are too. I'm impressed with both extremes. I just don't buy stuff that costs very much. Most everything I buy has been through at least one owner before it ever comes to me. If it ain't cheap I probably can't or will not buy it based on my billfold and or attitude. Being frugal and patient has gotten me some very decent stuff over the years. I think I would get along with that Golden Spike fairly good at it's price point and quality as a using tool.
Both knives should have been sharpened to the best of your ability prior to testing. I agree that the 165 has a stronger full tang, but the 153 also should also have a full tang, just a lot slimmer like the end of a rat tail file. I have both knives made by the real Schrade USA company and I assure you they were both sharp when new. One of the pitfalls of the Chinese company. Schrade USA closed their doors forever in 2004 and Taylor cutlery bought all the patents and machinery immediately shipping them to China. Schrade USA made some of the finest knives you could buy, and Taylor did the name a huge disservice by selling out to China. If you want a good bushcrafting knife there are still some good made in USA ones, but you will pay significantly more for them. Benchmade 162 comes to mind. It has a sharp 90 degree spine for use with a ferro rod so you don't compromise the blades edge. There are others too.

I like them both. Have used the golden spike for many years with no problems.

I appreciate those classic knives. Also, items that are a good value. New subscriber.

The made in USA Schrade Old Timer knives were better. The fixed blade old timers were full tang.
Outdoorsman or buck 119?
Love both I always love a good and beautiful knife
Try out the Old Timer "Deer Slayer". It is an outstanding general purpose hunting knife.

Is that a welded tang on the Woodsman, attached just inside the handle, or is it one piece of steel end to end?
I believe it’s one piece
