  • The Old Timer Mountain Lion and the Uncle Henry Golden Spike are two very similar knives. Both are a classic hunting knife design with a leather sheath and clip point blade. But I like one just a little better than the other. See if you can guess which one wins.

    I had a Golden Spike YEARS ago that my uncle bought for me around 1979-80. Took care of a lot of rabbits and a few deer until the day I lost. Sat it down to put a rabbit in my hunting jacket, and started walking away. I spent at least a couple hours looking for it as soon as I realized it wasn't in its sheath. I'm 51 now and that memory still crushes me.

    "Flag on the moon" is the best metric "put down" I've heard. With your permission, I'd like to add it to my arsenal. Good review. Thanks!

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  7 років тому +2

      +Mark Ashlock I didn't really intend it as a "put down" but, after all the comments I have received from people who are obviously afraid of fractions, I couldn't resist using it. And you don't need my permission. I stole it from James Yeager. It may be in the "public domain"

      Own it! Don't apologize. If something is built 16" on center, the metric system doesn't make it any more accurate. It is what it is.

    Love to get home on Saturday and find a Schrade Saturday video!! Sometimes I think we all get a little carried away with what we ask a knife to do. No insult intended to anyone but they are a cutting tool first and foremost. We're not exploring the frontier, we're not surviving. We're camping, hiking, hunting or fishing and a Schrade or Buck knife will get the job done. IMHO.

    I've had both knives over the years, both were good.
    Lost the Uncle Henry while deer hunting in the mountains, replaced it with the old timer. Mine is carbon steel they haven't changed much except the steel.
    Both are easy handling.

    The golden spike has a hidden tang that goes all the way to the end cap it is plenty strong enough.There are other videos showing how it’s made and it’s a solid freaking knife.

    Thank you for this review and for almost not batoning with these knives. 😀
    For $25.00 these seemed like respectable tools. The plastic handles don't bother me considering the price point plus plastic is with us everywhere and can be quite strong and resistive to wear, but I do wish they would not try to make plastic look like stag. Again, given the price point I thought your review demonstrated these were serviceable knives; however, the one point I cannot forgive is a sheath that doesn't fit the blade -- really?

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  7 років тому +2

      +Richard Edgecomb maybe it was just a problem with that particular sheath or maybe it needs "breaking in". Or maybe it needs redesigned.

      It's Delrin (made by DuPont) just like the original U.S.A. made Old Timers used for half a century. All of these videos on the China made Old Timers complain about the "plastic" handles, but that's what's always been used, it's nothing new by any means.

    Have to agree on the "full tang vs. rat tang" assessment. I've had more than a few rat tail tang handles break on me, have never had a full tang handle break. I've had chips, rolls, even a crack, develop in full tangs on the blade but never the handle and that has happened on rat tail blades as well. Given my druthers, I'll take the full tang every day. And have to also agree with the "flag on the moon" statement as well, since there aren't any metric system countries flags up there it's kind of hard to disagree with that. Thanks Brian!

      Yeah, when I made this video, there was a whole lot of drama on the old UA-cam about Schrade knives using a hollow grind on one of Chris Tanner’s designs that was supposed to be a saber grind. So that was a little inside joke at the time. It’s a hollow grind.

    I like the full tang Mountain Lion. I believe the handles are made of Delrin. Case used delrin (and still do) during WW2 when other raw materials were needed for the war effort , or were not available. It is extremely durable. The sheath is nice looking as well. Thank you Brian for another great video.

    I have had my Old Timer Mountain Lion since 1981 or 1982,....no problems or complaints.
    I have used it on many deer.
    But in the 80's I was hunting in monsoons the leather wrinkled and never recovered.
    My fault I should have mink oiled it or something.
    This knife is better than the ones I make.
    Its a full tang knife not a rat tail tang.

But then a lot of people don't know how to use a knife. It's not an hatchet or wrecking bar. Come on people, get a life.

    I have an old time knife which was issued to me while in the Air Force, and probably still have another of their knives which I purchased years ago. The knife issued to me have a handle with plastic on it, but everything else is metal and it was used to but line which is used to rig parachutes we put on cargo pallets. The knife looks just like it did when it was new except the carbon steel have changed color to a black except where it is sharpened.

    I've owned both the golden spike and, as of yesterday, the mountain lion.
    The mountain lion by far is a better blade.
    Allow me to explain: when I bought my golden spike brand-new, the plastic handle which encased the stick tang was loose.
    The mountain lion, however, is a full-tang. No loose parts.

    Old Timer and Buck were my favorite knives back in the 70s and 80s for gutting and skinning. They both held a great edge, but that was with better steel. I had to get rid of my knives and most of my guns due to a divorce. I got a new woodsman a few years ago. It came shaving sharp but I don’t hunt anymore so I don’t know how good of an edge it holds with 7cr steel.

  • @beemerphill

    Thanks for another fine review. These are both fine knives that should last a while when used properly. Thanks for saying that using a knife as a baton for splitting is not a very useful test. That is one of those things that should only be used when there is no other alternative. Like others, i also enjoy the "balance test" that you do. Keep these videos coming.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  7 років тому +1

      I didn't say it should only be done when there is no alternative, only that splitting wood by batoning it is not necessarily a valid test of blade or edge strength. I think batoning to make kindling is a perfectly legitimate practice.

    You could argue that "Rat Tail" Tangs have been used successfully for a few thousand years. Swords survive in the Sutton Hoo Archeological find that show 34 inch Saxon era swords with tangs less than 3/8" that taper to the pommel to an 1/8' thickness. That's 800 A.D. There are many older and more lightly constructed hilts that have obviously withstood significant battle damage to the blade with zero damage to the quillon, guard, grip, tang or pommel.
    The "batoning" issue I believe extends from people not knowing how to use a knife. It is not a crow bar. It is not a froe. It is not an axe. If you put 250+ lb-foot of torque at any point of a 1/4" -1/2" area cross section of steel (of most any type) it will develop fractures on the tension side... (You are making a lot of heat on the compression side.) I can baton 1 1/2" wood along the grain with a 3" slipjoint folding knife. Don't hit the handle. Don't pry with it. Don't swing like it owes you money.
    Do you ever wonder why people don't like to loan out their tools? It's because of the yahoo' Bumble-gorilla weekenders that think abuse, adrenaline, testosterone. and enthusiasm are a substitute for skill and planning. Great, you can bench press your Jeep by the bumper, can you tie a clove hitch? How about carve a decent tent stake? A pot hanger? Do you know the difference between burdock and poison sumac? I'll stop.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  7 років тому +1

      +Christopher Neely you could argue that (and I did mention that point) but I don't think you can reasonably argue that a full tang knife is inherently stronger, all other things being equal.

    • @christopherneelyakagoattmo6078
      @christopherneelyakagoattmo6078 7 років тому

      More steel is hard to argue with. No doubt. I guess I just ranted out a stress reliever, about people that abuse the crap out of a $25-30 knife. They blame the manufacturer for a rat tail tang; when they break it with a three foot club... Bonus points for the, "Flag on the moon." bit. Perfect.

    I think that the Golden Spike has the more traditional look, but the full tang on the Mountain Lion is a plus. Who noticed the time on his watch saying 4:44 . Then click on that time stamp and look at his face and imagine your dad asking “did you steal my car last night boy”.

    I bought a golden spike in 1985. Since then it has done everything I've ever wanted it to do. The blade is certainly not stainless and is is not as pretty as the new ones. Never felt the need to buy another hunting knife and I expect to pass it on to my nephew when I die.

    Both seem like nice knives. I like them. But full tang is a full tang. Would be my choice too. ( Just spent most of the day rebuilding a wood and bone handle for a large rat tail tang Sami knife for a friend of mine. ) The sheath of both of them looks hefty and durable. Seems like similar quality as the sheaths of my SCHF42 and 42D. I have to admit I like the Uncle Henry sheath with the pocket bit more. Always nice to have a sharpening stone along. ( I guess real Arkansas stones of proper size are not that difficult to find ) I wonder if the Old Timer fits there? Have a great weekend Bryan :) Big thumbs up!

    Stick tang is a better term than rat tail, since rat tail has become associated with poor quality welded tangs, you're right stick tangs have been used pretty much as long as there have been knives, most European swords have that type of tang as well.

    I used to be a big fan of the Old Timers, years back, when they were USA made & from 1095 steel. Never really cared much for any of the Uncle Henry's, though, past or present. I don't like the new, made in China, Old Timers, as they're not as "refined" in fit/finish as the "old" one's were. Still, I definitely don't discount Shrade knives altogether. One of my personal favorite Schrade knives, is my "black handled", SCHF42D with its 1095 steel. Of the two your reviewing, if I had to pick one, it'd be the "full tang" Old Timer.

    There's a pic/review on Amazon showing the 165OT which is similar in construction, but isn't truly full tang. Don't know if it's real, but why would somebody fabricate that?🤔

      probably because the side steel is of different quality and cost of that one of the blade.

    If I had to rely on only one knife, it's a full tang for me. But since I don't, in this case, I'd go with the rat tail with it's traditional good looks. In my battery of knives, I have a large Bowie knife, forged in Germany, which is almost 100 years old with a real stag handle, and thusly it's rat tail mount. I use this knife as a knife should be used, and I have no worrys about it holding up.

    • @charleslarson3152
      @charleslarson3152 7 років тому

      Yep Bryan!! That Classic Randall is indeed a hollow grind and rat tailed.....as it should be. These knives started in the 30's and countless soldiers carried them as their fighting knife in WWII...and still do, to this day! True works of art!

    The nickel silver guard and pomel look like brass?

  • @James-ke5sx
    @James-ke5sx 2 роки тому

    The Schrade is probbly not full tang. A review on Amazon took off the handle from the 165OT Woodsman and it's a rat tail welded to the rest of the handle so I would assume this is the same construction. I hate it when companies try to fool people like this. By the way there are only three countries in the world that use the old measurement system. USA, some small country in Africa and some small country in the Far East. But even those two countries are switching to metric. Everyone else has moved into the faster to use metric system. Which leaves the USA as the only country in the world to still use the older system.
    Example, multiply
    USA 5 feet 7 13/32 inches X 17 feet 4 3/8 inches
    Metric
    388cm X 1568cm. This is not the accurate conversion from standard to metric is just an example.
    I am a retired Carpenter here in Canada and I grew up using the standard system. As the years went on I switched into metric and it's easier more accurate and much faster to use. No more feet inches and fractions to convert just one single number.
