I've been extremely happy with all my ryobi lawn equipment over the years and have enjoyed completely trouble free reliable performance and have zero need or desire to get into another battery platform for asthetics or charge times. I'm already on Dewalt, ryobi 18v and 40v. The carbon fiber 40v ryobi trimmer is the only one I'm going to consider upgrading to just to get into the expand it system. Do I wish it had the nice aluminum construction of the ego setup? I guess... It's going to work exactly the same. Do I wish it had the huge power brick form factor of their battery and loud charger? No way, that's probably what annoys me the most about ego, and their color scheme just does nothing for me.
Great video, as always! Thank you sir 👍 Is the Ryobi 40V HP string trimmer not at your local Home Depot yet? Just a suggestion - might not be a bad idea to review that one at some point down the road. I believe Ryobi is currently marketing it as their top of the line brushless string trimmer, along with all of their other HP OPE tools.

No worries buddy! I've been fixing your engineers designs my whole life. I'll be able to figure this one out. It's official I'm going to buy the Ryobi 40 volt
I wonder what kind of Engineer you are? First, the wimpy charger is a good thing. You want to charge a battery as slow as possible. Slow reduces the heat inside a battery causing it to last a lot longer. Also As soon as you use the battery, you put it on the charger so that the next time you use the battery, it is charged. Second, it looks like you can put the handle onto the bar either way so that it is angled up or down. Third, when you trimmed with the Ego, you kept the head far away so that you used the end of the string to trim with. Some of the scenes with the Ryobi you had the head of the trimmer right up against the solid object you were trimming around causing more wear and tear on the head/motor. Fourth, the Ego is $250, the Ryobi is $190, both at Amazon prices. For the $60 difference, I would glue a little guide into the Ryobi so the string would feed right through. That is the Engineer in me.
WINDING THE STRING: YOU NEED TO TURN THE GREEN KNOB TO LINE UP THE HOLES. IF YOU LOOK THROUGH ONE HOLE AND SEE DAY LIGHT YOU'VE DONE IT CORRECTLY AND THE STRING WILL FEED RIGHT THROUGH.. THIS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF "USER ERROR".
You do know that you can straighten the string before feeding and put the handle on for right or left handed use? You did say you are an engineer, right?
An engineer can design a building but it doesn't mean they know how to actually build it. The way he handled and flailed with this would not make me comfortable putting him in the construction field with a tool in hand. Is this the easiest of trimmers to use, probably not. Was this an epic fail, no...............just operator error.
@@Kitearmy I just got the carbon fiber edition which I believe is a slightly upgraded model to the one you have. All the heads work perfectly fine and internally on the string trimmer feed there is a little tunnel the string passes through when the arrows are lined up. Both heads click on and off fairly easily.
I’ve had this trimmer for two years now and have had zero issues. I use it weekly around the yard and at the farm. It’s also much less expensive than EGO. It’s also compatible with my old tool heads. I would suggest before you make a video about something that you actually use it for a period of time. Btw- it takes less than a minute to spool new line. It’s working just fine for me and I’m not going broke buying overpriced EGO products.
I have the same trimmer and I have no issues with it sometimes it’s good to use common sense. How could you try to put the line in with out getting it straight first. I hope you never have to feed a string through a needle.LoL
Haha you’re an engineer? I bought this trimmer yesterday and my wife put it together and strung it before I finished unloading the car. Maybe time to go back to school
@@Kitearmy I think it’s cute that in a vast majority of the comments(besides the one you pinned) everyone is saying they didn’t have an issue with it. Seems you’re not alone as you say but you’re certainly in the minority. Whatever floats your boat tho, fanboys will be fanboys
Just bought one and put it through the ringer myself today, I had no problems reloading the string, maybe more difficult than others but not in any significant way that I noticed
@@Kitearmy simplicity tends to last longer, fancy buttons for the sake of convenience are just extra things that will break. But I gotta admit it does look really cool but I wouldn't buy one until the 5th or 6th model with that feature comes out.
Yea he is biased and has his mind made up before he even reviews anything to bash it unless it says ego on it. I can load my line in my Ryobi trimmer in under a minute with zero issues. It’s extremely easy to load. But seems like the ego fan has an ego when he’s not capable of using his hands as well.
I cannot believe how difficult he made this seam. I can think of many other weed eaters that have much more difficult to use heads. Yes the echo is nice but to not be an auto loader I have to say the Ryobi comes in a solid second to it. This was a very immature review.
Kite army would have better reviews if he would just stop bashing Ego's competitors. I like ego but I also like other brands too and I've seen kite army do reviews on all of the blowers out there and they were the best reviews I've ever seen kite army do. He should do more reviews like that. Thanks mate - I really can't say you are wrong but let me tell you I did not try at all to make this trimmer look bad - it just was. Anyway stay tuned for review this weekend - I think you are going to appreciate it
Seriously disagree with some points made here. I own this model and The heads are not that hard to put on. Secondly just get the blades and will not have to worry about loading string. I can understand though pointing out that the string channel should have been engineered better, but this model is not a fail.
I admit the trimmer head could be better but it seems the head part in your video is missing a little cap that helps channel the string (3:05 min mark) its not as hard is it was shown in the video. It should channel through a lot easier. Unless this is an older model and they fixed it since then. It shouldn’t be that hard.
I have the same model, not sure about how you reviewed this. But mine; the tool work perfect, I have been using it for over a year. My only issue is the battery, you should not drain the battery or it will go on a “sleep mode”. Other then that I’m happy with the tool, the price was good.Try to remove the guard and see results ;) just stay safe.
Funny but IMHO the ryobi trimmer head is the best in the market. Some people like fixed line, some the plastic blades and some the spool line. Ryobi present the three options in one trimmer head. Super easy to change from one option to the other. Super fast to load and to change the line. The original batteries are expensive at Home Depot. but you can find them at eBay quite cheap. With the fast charger, the 4ah/144wh batteries charges in about 30 minutes. The 6ah/216wh batteries change in about an hour. For most things you can run the ryobi trimmer on low speed, giving you plenty of run time. At high speed you get the power to deal with the most demanding jobs. Things I do not like; (1) The knob to tightens the attachments to the upper part is plastic. The should go back to the full metal one used in previous models. (2) The spring in the trimmer head is too soft, I replaced it with a stronger one. (3) assembly in china.... not much quality control. As a result many units will get to the store with malfunctions. So if you buy your trimmer there, there is a change to you will have to return it, No problem, they will replace it with another one, but there the ryobi trimmers are expensive. You can get them really cheap over ebay, but if you get a bad one, tough luck for you.
The real problem is you don’t even take the time to make sure the line is not straight ! You said you were an engineer so use your brain it really that simple. I was told by many engineers are just not mechanically inclined you are a fine example of that . Oh thumbs down .
How is it a epic fail it seemed to work fine , it’s actually quite easy to load any one with a fraction of common sense can load it , it takes a bit of a wiggle and it goes right in , the only epic fail here is your video and for that reason I won’t watch anymore of your videos 👍
Been using two of the 40v HP trimmers to maintain a 180 acre sports complex with zero issues. Head takes a little getting used to but all my employees like it. We use ECHO 0.95 line with it. Also, the fast chargers make a massive difference.
even after your review I went ahead and purchased it just because I already have the power head. I was loving it until I had to replace the string and had similar issues as you did. I took the spool off and realized my string had missed the center of the spool mechanism. simple alignment issue and back in business.
@@Kitearmy But i dont have any Ego batteries. Since i already own a Ryobi lawn mower, and the quick charger for this battery, and you can remove the head to install the line, i see no issues and placed an order. Pretty easy obstacles to overcome imo! Its the power im after. I felt the 18V trimmer was too slow. Maybe the fast charger is not released in the US yet? Seems Europe gets access to Ryobi tools earlier than the US.
I got the string stuck inside and I can’t even get to it to fix it. I can’t turn the green spool at all counterclockwise (if that’s what you are supposed to do to access it.). Nor have I figured out another way to access it. Of course, the instructions don’t acknowledge this situation, so I’m stuck till I figure it out.
I just purchased the carbon fiber version and it seems to have a plastic port for the string to flow through easily. I put my own string in and it was pretty quick and easy. Also the charger with the carbon fiber seems to be the larger quick charger and it brought it from 1/4 dots to 3 dots in like 30 mins. I didn't finish charging it because I had another battery and wanted to keep it semi charged until I use it next weekend. I'm already invested in the Ryobi system with a handful of attachments I have and have used with their old version which works well still as a backup. I have spent hours and hours during hot summer heat trying to change string on other trimmers mostly the Stihl trimmers and this one seemed to be easy mode compared to those imo.
If you take the head off, it is easy to thread. I’m not an engineer but it is easy to load the string. I had a Stihl strimmer which was a pain in the arse. This guy would make boiling water look difficult
@@ernestgalvan9037 zero minutes - Ryobi on the other hand gives you a convenient tool to wind, that is if you can even load the sting - yep zero minutes (only 10 seconds - not a minute) : ua-cam.com/video/rpOvKVy34cA/v-deo.html
This review is unfortunate and misleading. I almost avoided this trimmer because of this review, but after handling it i bought the 40v HP carbon fiber model today and it is very easy to load and does have a string guide in the head. Lots of power, bump feeds easily. Trigger is very light and smooth variability... I like this machine a lot. It also came with a fast charger and feels very well built, light weight and balances like a regular gas trimmer. Honestly I love it. Seems like they addressed all the problems you had with it. With 2 batteries I can essentially trim nonstop with it, as one battery charges in the same time the second one drains. The HP model at least is not an epic fail. Far from it.
Bullshit! I've used dozens of weed eaters and hated them all until i got the ryobi. I love it! I love using it. Far superior to any other i've used. Of course that is my opinion. I'm happy with mine.
You should not be allowed to operate power tools. Just pay someone. The Ryobi is a GREAT tool. Also, I don't believe you're an engineer. This video is an EPIC FAIL!!!
I really wish I'd seen this review before I bought this pos. It was fine until I had to replace the string which, I agree with the reviewer, is almost impossible - EXTREMELY frustrating. The reviewer should have shown us how to take the head apart to load the string. I'm still trying to figure that out. My almost new trimmer might well wind up in the dump.
based on these comments, I'm guessing you don't have to be an engineer to figure out this trimmer. and that Ryobi figured if you're an engineer more than likely aren't doing your own lawn either lol love how every comment disagrees with this review. based on these comments I will be buying this Ryobi trimmer. great comments. strange video.
Your dishonesty in badmouthing the ryobi trimmer and praising ego is disgusting!!! I ove the head. The handle is in the right angle. Any right handed user will tell you so. Dishonest review.
I just got mine yesterday and had no issues swapping the heads on it and 3 hours of charge time is fine since I go more than that between cuttings. The one thing I don't like is that the manual fixed line will not work with the .155 line I have that I use with my gas trimmer. The .095 line is just too thin, I have to change that at least twice when doing my property. I can do the entire property with a single .155. I will try to find a way to mod this but I'm happy with mine.
Wow the worst review ever , if you don’t like ryobi don’t review it , buy a better brand for most people it is a great trimmer just bought one for my dad he loves it and it does the job fine Realistically does not take that long to load the string use a bit of common sense and it takes a second or two 🤷🏻♂️
I personally have the Trimmer and I actually found that it is the easiest to load string on that I’ve ever dealt with you just feed the string through the holes on the bottom make sure they are even and twist them into place super Duper easy
Aren't the white arrows on the sides supposed to be aligned (and not in the locked position) when you want to feed the line through? Yours was in the locked position.
This guy had me on edge, lol. I have this trimmer and it’s the easiest thing to load. I’m not saying it’s the best trimmer in the world but It works well.
@@Kitearmy don’t just work it works extremely well. I’m very happy with my 179.00 purchase. Being an engineer I would think it’s not that difficult loading a weed eater. Lol😂
@@Kitearmy Let me start by saying I love your reviews. I bought the EGO 650 blower and loving it so far. I have been weed eating in a counterclockwise direction for over 20 years. I don't think I would like the clockwise direction of the EGO. Maybe? The Makita looks really smooth and with the motor being on the bottom, maybe less vibration?
Thanks for the video. I think 3 hours to charge a battery with that VA isn't bad. Back in the day, batteries of all sorts took 12-14 hours to charge. Rapid charging makes batteries hotter and heat kills batteries. That's how the companies make you have to buy more batteries. I'd actually prefer a slower charger.
The battery charge is 3 hours with the charger included in the kit. Ryobi sells rapid chargers that are up to 4x faster. So, if a regular charger takes 3 hours to charge 4amp battery, then the rapid charger would charge it for about 45min. Needless to say, that regular (standard) charger is better for the overall battery life. This guy is a joke.
Obviously biased and not too sharp. Never even tried straightening the string to get it to feed. Not helpful as a tool review. Don't quit your day job buddy.
@@Kitearmy have never owned a single one. Thats why I'm looking at reviews. 40v post hole digger is interesting, so I looked for equipment on the same platform. I've invested in the ridgid tool line because of their warranty. Rural where I live and still unsure of batt operated equipment. At least the low quality homeowner line. May just only own the auger and have to hang a charger on my wall for one tool. Your review was seriously shit though. Its a disservice to the honest reviews out there.
The fixed line head with 4 points of quality .105 line is magic. I haven't reloaded it since last summer, but takes all of 6 seconds. The bump feed head is still new in box where they all belong for any brand. Maybe you should have let your husband try loading it. EGO doesn't even make a fixed line/bladed head muchless include one. Nor can any EGO use .105 commercial line. I own both Ryobi and EGO systems so I bought both the Ryobi and the rare attachment capable brushless EGO. Fixed shaft versions are a waste when you need multiple tools. Both were nice, but returned the EGO mainly due to not having the larger diameter fixed line head. Ryobi was also more powerful. The extra power isn't needed during string trimming (I use the low Ryobi setting), but absolutely nesessary with the fixed blade edger attachment. Blowers? That's my only EGO tool better or even equal to Ryobi.
My dad got this trimmer for the Expand-It system mainly. He did not like the head system at all. Luckily head from his Craftsman gas trimmer works on the Expand-It system on this trimmer. He like the Craftsman head since you can load 0.105 string on the head easily. It lasts for a long time unless you hit concrete. He is only about 1/3 or 1/2 of way done with the spool of line that he bought like 15 years ago, and I believe the spool was around 500 or 700 feet of line, but the label is no long on the spool since it had been in the weather a few times.
All this guy does is talk trash about ryobi and other companys all he says is (ego is the best) in every video so he's extreamly biased prob paid by ego too lol
My first comment either did not get posted or it was deleted. In it I stated to obvious straighten the line then try to feed it in. I have an earlier model with the same loading method. I straighten the line and I am able to feed it right in. I think you wanted a failure.
Gotta love biased reviews. Just take a look in the description and you'll see the brand he is sponsored by. Don't listen to a word in this video and find one that gives a proper, unbiased review.
27-year-old wife loves the Ryobi over the DeWalt. Ryobi's battery lasts longer and is able to trim around the house, 2 40 foot containers, 57 trees, and 100 yards of entry fence. Before the battery goes dead. Puts it on the charger and mows and then takes the battery off the charger and puts it on the blower. Plan enough energy to blow off around the house, carports and porches. She got to full trimmings out of 1 head of string from the factory. Today was her 1st day to have to reload it. She didn't have a problem and said it was much easier than the DeWalt tremor. The battery last twice as long and the reloading of the tremor are much easier than the DeWalt

@@Kitearmy yes yes yes, you've tested over 100 string trimmers. I've painted thousands of rooms in the last 20years, that doesn't mean if I show up tomorrow and mess something up that it didn't happen. I've enjoyed a lot of your reviews, including this one technically, I just feel you missed the mark.
All good points - But they are both $199.
This thing smokes the Ryobi: www.lowes.com/pd/EGO-5-Amp-60-in-Corded-Electric-String-Trimmer/5000200365
I also agree with the idea of adding the guide tube on the head - why do you think the Ryobi engineers did not?
Last question Jim - if I was to send you either the EGO or Ryobi which one would you prefer?
@@Kitearmy Ryobi, But I don't want one and I don't need one. I have an 18V Ryobi.
I guess you could say that about anything
@@Kitearmy L

I will bet you $1000 on the handle - it only goes on one single direction. I bet you won't pay or admit that you are wrong
An engineer can design a building but it doesn't mean they know how to actually build it. The way he handled and flailed with this would not make me comfortable putting him in the construction field with a tool in hand. Is this the easiest of trimmers to use, probably not. Was this an epic fail, no...............just operator error.
@@eyegrey48 Yep probably - though the best products eliminate operator error as an issue
@@Kitearmy I just got the carbon fiber edition which I believe is a slightly upgraded model to the one you have.
This model is new for 2021 - maybe you have a different model
Great comment - thoughtful
The real problem is you don’t even take the time to make sure the line is not straight ! You said you were an engineer so use your brain it really that simple. I was told by many engineers are just not mechanically inclined you are a fine example of that . Oh thumbs down .

Thanks for your opinion - right or wrong (WRONG)

Yeah - but batteries have changed - look at your cell phone would a 12-14 charge work?
The battery charge is 3 hours with the charger included in the kit. Ryobi sells rapid chargers that are up to 4x faster. So, if a regular charger takes 3 hours to charge 4amp battery, then the rapid charger would charge it for about 45min.
Needless to say, that regular (standard) charger is better for the overall battery life.
