      Interested in where you found parts. I'm debating on getting one that was a barn find in decent shape other than a blown motor. One other person passed on it due to that.

    • @yepitsconner
      @yepitsconner 2 роки тому +2

      @@Fizzbann I actually bought it as is. So far mechanically, most parts stores carry engine parts under $100, interior parts are the trickiest to track down from what I’ve seen. I’ve considered buying a parts car, but most of the cars that I’ve seen for sale that don’t run typically go for upwards of $5k. I’m going to dig around a bit more to see what I can find, but just keep in mind, some parts are gonna be more than hundreds to keep the interior in decent shape.

    I think the Charger nameplate is one of the most varied in the auto industry. It was once a two door muscle car, then a two door "hot hatch", then a four door "muscle" sedan (just don't get the V6).

    It's also nice to see that the radio and door cards are intact - that was usually one of the first things done to these - stereo upgrade with a couple house loud speakers in the back.

    Thank you for reviewing this! These (and the Omni GLH/GLHS) were staples of my young adult auto life! These were the "tuner" cars of the day...
    And what I'd really love to see is a _smooth yet quick_ gear change from 1st to 2nd while making a left hand turn at a stop sign / light. That was always an issue with these transmissions - on the autocross there better not be a left hand shortly after starting off otherwise you'd have to get into 2nd and just suffer not having power....

  • @new2000car
    @new2000car 2 роки тому +4

    Great video on this car. Thanks! The gauge is not a voltage indicator, it’s an alternator indicator. It lets you know if your alternator is charging (like after a start) or if it’s not charging, so your battery is on borrowed time before it is drained completely and the engine stalls. Also the vents in the center do a lot. You have to open the vent door, it’s to the right, the control. It’s out of sight of the driver, but not the passenger. When it’s off it’s barely visible.

  • @geraldscott4302
    @geraldscott4302 2 роки тому +5

    I remember these "cars" These were almost certainly the filmiest things ever sold in the U.S. They had the structural integrity of an aluminum beer can. A Chevy Chevette was an absolute tank compared to these. Front wheel drive, 4 lug wheels, they had a realm "tinny" sound while going down the road. You could actually make a dent in one with your finger. Notice how all the white screen printed lettering is wearing off the dash. Notice all the wrinkles in the seat upholstery. These were built on the 4 door Omni/Horizon platform, yet somehow those cars, as bad as they were, were much more substantial and better built than these things were. I'm absolutely amazed that this thing still exists. People thought the Chevy Vega was bad (and it was) but this was worse. Much worse. It must have spent it's entire life in storage untouched, though the paint appears to have some sun fade. If there is any other American car that even come close to being as chintzy as this car, it would have to be the mid '70s Chevy Monza and its B-O-P clones. I'll pass on this one.

    • @FernandoChaves
      @FernandoChaves 9 місяців тому +1

      @@biosupdate7449 Very different times. It was the era, not so much his preference I think. He was always the big motors/small car guy. He actually did a helluva lot with these, including the GLH and GLHS. He had a whole line of aftermarket parts for them too. It was really a big gig for him. I'll put it this way, in 1984 my 4 cylinder Shelby outran the 84 Corvette in every way. With a few small upgrades, it was seriously world class fast and handling. Not kidding. Very different times. I used to street race and I put that car up against cars like the Lotus Esprit Turbo, Corvettes, Porsche, and Ferrari. . I also ran it in SCCA Solo.

    I had an ‘85 and you might want to drive one as a comparison to your RX-7 of the same year. The turbo first appeared that year and transformed this car with 168 lb-ft of steering wheel jerking torque. My technique was to brace my left elbow against the door so it wouldn’t steer into the ditch in both first and second gears. I once raced a ‘66 289 Mustang to a dead heat. They were that quick.

    I absolutely love these cars, for my highschool auto project in 2017-18 me and a bunch a friends took my 87 new Yorker, and found a junkyard glhs and a junkyard dodge spirit (I think they were called) and ended up frankensteining them all together. Rest of highschool I drove a miniature limousine that would talk to you, matched with a engine that lotus helped build, and an underbody and trans of a glhs. Thing was cool as hell, especially watching the digital speedometer not be able to keep up, sadly my sister had to try and move it and not know what a manual transmission was. Was a neat yard ornament until the parents got it towed away

    I love stuff like this, as much for the novelty as that it actually existed. I believe this car was an evolution of the Dodge Omni 024 coupe, reworked with some body changes and a nice rename. The reason Dodge used the front drive Omni/Charger platform is simple: the rear drive platforms Chrysler had were old tech, large and neither fast nor particularly efficient, while the smaller FWD platform was light, could be nimble with the right setup, and featured the more current 2.2 engine. It was what Chrysler had, and it had potential. The turbo cars that succeeded this (the GLH and GLH-S in particular) were considerably faster. As for anyone fussing about FWD, the Honda Integra is 4cl FWD and it is a legend.

    I just posted a comment on your 85 4Runner video a few minutes ago and this is another car from my friend's family that I spent a lot of time in. It was his older sister's. She got it brand new for her 16th birthday. It was an 86 in this exact color scheme. I was usually in the back seat, which really wasn't safe even for a guy who was 5'6 and 150 pounds at the time. With the turbo, this was a fun little car, though it would have definitely been more so as a RWD car. I didn't know until today that the first couple of years had a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder.

    Graduated HS in 83' so I remember these cars very well. I really dissed it at the time as I loved the 60's Chargers and didn't know how they could stick the Charger name on a FWD 2.2 car but it was a different era and I've come to appreciate them as I've gotten older and realize what Chrysler had to work with at the time. I bought a 84' Daytona turbo when they came out and it overall was a great car. I currently own a one owner 58k orig mile 84' Daytona Turbo Z I bought about 20 years ago.

    My first car was an 84 Charger ( non Shelby) in 1989. While it actually looked great , all of its major components ( minus engine and transmission) failed In spectacular ways. Brake pads would wear halfway and rip off the caliper, power steering rack locked up on left turns with a bad valve, AC compressor fell to pieces as I was driving , tailpipe rusted off the car at highway speed and I dented the transaxle pan on a steep driveway. It also had THE thinnest sheet metal I’ve ever seen on a vehicle. My 17 OCD self spent hours tightening loose interior panels and adding foam pieces to stop rattles all over the place. That said … I had amazing memories back then. Oh it also had the massive pop up sunroof that added a cool feel to the interior. Too bad it had no factory air deflector when you removed the panel ( like every other car did).

    The Dodge Shelby Chargers here ran from 1983 to 1988. The 1983's and 1984's had 2.2litre H.O. normally aspirated 4 cylinder, 107 bhp for 83. 110 bhp for 84.
    In 1985 they got 2.2 liter turbo 4 cylinder, with 145 bhp.
    The 1987-88 year they made Dodge Shelby Chargers GLHS ( Goes Like Hell Somemore) which got the 2.2litre intercooled 4 cylinder Turbo II. Same engine that was in Dodge Daytona Shelby Z cars.

    The steering wheel you note was pure Chryco parts bin. It was bland and a bit off center but it was fully collapsible for crash safety.

    Just thought of something terrifying. When the Charger Omni had come to an end. That was it dodge charger was good and dead. So here's the scary part. Without any demands for a refresh, without the right minds at play. All the engineers and designers of our chargers we know and love today. Without Ted Kenitsky, I probably said his name wrong. What I'm getting at is without all those people coming together to revive the dodge brand. We would have never seen the charger return to life. No R/T, No scat packs, no hellcats, nothing the charger 2door and 4 door car along with Chrysler Dodge would have been dead and gone. I am so happy it didn't happen and since 2005 we once again had our Mopar muscle cars especially the charger rise again from the dead bigger better and badder.

    If you really want to have the ultimate Shelby experience, try to find a 1986 Shelby Charger GLHS.

    Find a turbo Shelby Charger from 85+ and review that, if you haven't already...

    I thought they only made it from 85-87

    They took a Dodge Omni, turned it into a coupe, and called it a Charger.

      The coupe was called Omni 024 before it was rebadged as Charger.

    I like the seat covers and the gauges but I think the rest of the car looks revolting and ugly.
    I enjoyed the review though

    These cars were just plain crapola! Mopar had they're head in they're a$$ at this time ok for basic transportation but forget about anything for performance and they were built like $hit. 🤨👎
