I would argue the canon c200 is much better indie filmaker camera than the eva1 or ursa mini pro. the internal raw, great llowlight and quick af is fantastic (rarely have a person available for wireless follow focus). the raw can always be converted to 10bit 4k prores
the lower weight also means using a glidecam without a vest is possible (likewise using on a ronin will be much easier)
I completely disagree. This camera has the potential to open up raw shooting to new markets that were previously using weaker codecs out of necessity. It shoots raw and simultaneous 2k proxy - that's HUGE. It has the perfect mix of features with killer AF and excellent low light performance - that Ursa Mini Pro behind you has neither.
at the price point that it sits at what are canon opening up? there are plenty of cameras in this bracket that shoot raw. For those shooting raw out of neccescity, is autofocus a priority do you think? I see those 2 things as seperating out very different needs. The low light performance will be pretty good, im not sure that excelent is the word, alas stronger than the UMP on that front. My point is that aside from autofocus, which i think is good for as many people as it is irrelevant. This camera isnt best on class at anything else, and for the money there are plenty that already match it. For cheaper there are the a7s ii and the GH5 that better it in certain aspects also. Many thanks for watching and i appreciate your comments
The autofocus system in the c300mk2 is a winner. This one is the same. Is it for every shoot? No. But all of the other cameras that shoot internal raw don't even offer it.
I've had the T2i, T3i, 5D2, 5D3, C100, C100 Mark II, 1DX Mark II and I was waiting for another price drop for the C300 Mark II but now I will buy the C200. I'm run and gun, and that means ease of use out of the box and reliability. Canon has that, factor in an ergonomic menu system and it's a no brainer for me. Don't really care about the internal RAW but the XLR's on the body will be useful for gimbal work. I don't do a lot of slow mo work so I didn't jump to Sony like many others did but I predict many will find their way back up Canon because of the C200

whats the difference between the c200 and 1dx mkii i want to buy the 1dx for 4k but everybody keeps talking about the c200 since you have the 1dx mkii whats not so good about it, i do music videos and short films
It's an OK camera. Good AF, 4k 50p that surprised me as Canon usually is one step behind in resolution, fps or camcorder lenses; and it has raw when needed. It's a fast turnaround camera. Not a youtuber or vlogger camera unless they want to carry a bulky camera and tripod. Small production or even one man band event camera. This time I'm afraid Canon has more or less nailed it, and I'm not a fan, but I have the feeling they'll sell a good amount of these things.
I disagree entirely. For someone who does run & gun, with the odd short film or TV advert this is perfect. Why? Because on the odd occasion you need it, it has the best AF in the business. When you need to work in low light, it provides completely useable footage at high ISO's. When you're doing a short film or advert, it has the raw (and yes, Black Magic compress their raw too). The only gap is the 1080p broadcast spec that'll hopefully be solved by the codec release early next year.
For someone like me who's looking to upgrade from my C100ii, I'd have to keep the Canon for AF & low light if I bought the Ursa Mini Pro, whereas this camera can successfully be both a run & gun machine, and can also grade to a cinematic look, enabling me to kill two birds with one stone and save $3000 or so.
all good points, Thanks for watching
I thought it did 1080 10bit out of the hdmi (4k is 8bit). so it should be covered for 1080p broadcast. (correct me if I'm wrong).
Ursa Mini Pro ISO 1600, Canon C200 ISO 104,000. And you say the BM is better? Haha, nice one. C200 auto focus and the Canon look is worth it to me. To me they are fairly equal. Let's see how the upcoming XF-AVC codec works when we get it. ProRes in the BM is very nice and I think the canon codec will look nice as well. It should, it is 1000 Mbps!
the strongest points of the C200 for me is DPAF/touchscreen & canon's color. i have many cameras and in the canon line a 1DXmkII & C100. the new AU-EVA1 looks pretty decked out with a nicer array of codecs and looks to be very strong especially with its Dual ISO still i will opt for the C200 because of DPAF. i understand people have different priority points and can see where the C200 would be lacking to them.
if auto focus is important to you then undoubtedly the canons have everyone pipped there. Thanks for watching
I appreciate your view on it. I don't really want to go out and hear everyone saying how great it is. I want to hear about flaws too. However with that said, I am a c100 mark ii owner and the autofocus is critical for me as I am a run/gun filmmaker and have no focus pullers. Pretty much 1 man show. It appears this would a good upgrade for me, but if I were a c300 mark ii owner... I'd be pissed cause they're kinda getting hosed on this one in some aspects.
I agree entirely, Thanks for watching
I am super stoked. Ordered mine and can't wait to play. :-)
Simple - if you don't like it, don't buy it. Only Canon users will understand the value of the C200. It's image quality; ease of use and thoughtful design; and the best sensor and lenses on the market.
I think it's perfect upgrade for a c100 owner , or any other HD camera owner looking to upgrade. I get it that a c300 owner would be pissed however , first paying $15k then $11k after price reduction, and yet c200 is $7.5k. in the end i don't think the picture either one produces will be better than the other. it's the features differences (Mic jax placement, touchscreen etc)
Honestly, Canon should just make a C100 MKIII with 4K 60P 10-bit internal recording. That camera would sell.
Nice summary. The EVA-1 looks like a much more exciting proposition. Switching over to the EF mount and 5.7k raw recording (when it finally drops) are welcome additions; but it's a shame that they opted to stick with the red carbon-fiber accents that we saw on the DVX-200. Unfortunately I still expect that the C200 will outsell it though - if only because of manufacturer reputation.
One word autofocus. Specs only really matter so much. What's more important for the type of people who will by the C200 is workflow. Also unlike dslrs or 4/3rds the c-series cameras work out of the box for video. Great battery life, 2 XLRs with phantom power, and the best autofocus in the business means that 7000+ is worth it. I saw a film crew shooting corperate video with a C100 mki today. Moral of the story: camera specs don't pay the bills good quality film does.
I'm a bit surprised that you are so quick to dismiss the quality of Canon RAW Light in comparison to ProRes. I think you ought to actually test grading and really push those RAW files yourself before making claims that it ''certainly won't give you as much as a good ProRes codec''.
Thank you for these videos and all the effort you put in. Lol..your thoughts at the start of the video..just typically Canon.
I saw some graded raw shots - pulled and pushed, over and under - looked like it held up pretty well to me - way better than ProRes. So for someone who wants to shoot raw its an option and could be a goer. Still , not fussed on the Canon mount. Don't get me wrong - Canon make beautiful lenses but PL would be more versatile. Same problem with the Panasonic.
I'm not quite sure of Raw Light either though we haven't seen anything of it yet (I don't think). The whole idea of raw is to get as much unrestricted data into the file and the minute you limit that then you have to sacrifice certain things. Time will tell.
So what are your criticisms again? Sorry, I missed them amidst all the hyperbole.
I'm actually who you spoke to at cinegear. Even after hearing about the eva1 I'm still going for the c200. I respect your stance though
Hey Ken, Good to hear from you. Do let me know how you get on with it.Take it easy!
I think you are getting sold on the aspect that many filmmakers are falling slave to, and that is 4K, 4K, 4K. Honestly, I am not a canon fanboy, but they do color a lot better than black magic. Being a colorist, I find grading black magic cameras quite annoying. Along with this the crop on these sensors is insane. But honestly the black magic Ursa mini 4.6k is good for what you pay for. But not good enough to crap on canon's cinema cameras with it.
Thanks for watching, I agree the canon colour science is far more advanced than that of BMD, But with the EVA1 Panasonics colour is a lot stronger than Canons. What challenges do you have grading the raw or prores from the ursa? Agreed the non ursa cameras have one hell of a crop.
I find the Ursa having an insane crop. So much so my boom OPs were surprised at where they could position the boom and not be in frame.
its super 35 though, same as everything else.. are you sure you weren't shooting windowed or something?
Mat Cooper I may have, but I know other filmmakers have mentioned that too. The other thing with Ursas is due to their meh low light capabilities you really have to light your scenes nice. Which is no problem, unless you really need the low light. I like the Ursa for its price though
hahaha, @Mat Cooper red's raw codec is more compressed than this. only BMD cameras have true uncompressed raw, or canons MLraw.
Uncompressed has ended up being different to raw, uncompressed at 4k is around 12Gbps, Which i dont think any cameras are recording. the red Codec is as Raw as a codec gets, as its a data stream only, not images, or a video strema repackaged.and thus will take more compression without significant loss. Also the r3d system has varying degrees of compression that are user selectable. Cinema DNG as its implemented on the Black magic cameras is also compressed as a user definable level. thats said there a lossless setting. However that is still converting 12Gbps raw data into images of sorts and claim to be "mathematically lossless". The canon ML light is a 12-1 compression or there abouts as it end up as 1Gbps. Im sure that there will some clever trickery to resolve more information than the 12:1 suggests. Many thanks for watching
very well said.....i feel the same way....too little, too late from canon.
Andrew atm thanks Andrew, I was alone sailing this ship
Says an URSA Mini Pro user! Lol I think you're just a little a little hurt by Canon for some other reason and you are taking it on the C200
actually, the camera is very intresting...but the problem again is the price!!! Way overpriced !!!
ya i think your wrong
The sensor is very tempting and RAW will give you all the DR most are only dreaming of. EVA1 very interesting as well. Can't wait to see a footgae comparison.
Come and join the discussion in the EVA1 Facebook group facebook.com/groups/1901910450021643/
the sony fs5 is much better
Disagree with pretty much all of this.
This is crazy the sony A6500 does all this expect the raw light and it's 1,300. True you can't shoot with it more than 20 minutes. lol, but $7,500 for this NO THANK YOU CANON. I'll wait for Sony's next camera it's bound to be as good as the EVA 1 . Then I'll make my choice. Hopefully the FS5 II rocks with the new A9 auto focus system. Another crippled over price camera from canon I'm tired of waiting on them. Poor codecs and junkie bit rates!!
u talking 2 much
