  • An encounter with an unfriendly she-bear nearly becomes fatal for Jim Bowie when his rifle misfires. Realizing the need for a simpler and more reliable weapon, he approaches master blacksmith Samuel Black with an idea for a new type of knife.
    The Adventures of Jim Bowie is an American Western television series that aired on ABC from 1956 to 1958. Its setting was the 1830s-era Louisiana Territory. The series was an adaptation of the book Tempered Blade, by Monte Barrett.

    I'm 72. I thought I remembered a version where the blacksmith, added a meteorite to the metal mix for an out of this world alloy that no other knife could possess. Anyone else remember this? I didn't see any reference to that in this episode. Maybe the episode was shortened here and there. I definitely remember that aspect, because it was such a remarkable thing to do. I must have been a child or in my teens when I saw that.

      I believe that was the 1952 film The Iron Mistress with Akan Ladd.

      The meteor was from "The Iron Misstress " with Alan Ladd.

      Ultimately the movie Iron Mistress was based on the book of the same name.
      Yes. I remember the bladesmith kept meteorite ore and kept it around for a special project. Interestingly enuf King Tutenkamen in his tomb was buried with him two very ornate daggers. One of solid gold and the other one was made of a steel and through a process that was supposedly impossible at this time.
      Perhaps was made from.meterorite?
      (Or something else not from Earth?)

    Thanks. I remember this show growing up. Very charismatic, likable actor. Entertaining tv series for it’s time. Have owned, used, thrown many "Bowie " knives in my 70+ years.

    I didn’t mind that this wasn’t the “true story of how the knife was born”.
    What I mind is how they couldn’t say his name the way Jim actually pronounced it 200 years ago.

    This pilot was apparently the only episode where the knife played any real part, other than a piece of costume. Apparently, the sponsors and the network were fine with other Westerns shooting people left and right, but a knife fighter was going too far.

    • @Quincy_Morris
      @Quincy_Morris 5 місяців тому +1

      The knife features in other episodes, that is, he draws or throws it and uses it. I don’t think anyone gets knifed though. Probably too graphic for Television.
