I was nine and was amazed at this show so well written!! And yes Johnny Cash did the classic song! The Rebel is classic American television when decency was a topic we took seriously!!

When you talk about the "morals" of the time, I assume you are a white male?
This show was based on fiction, Johnny Yuma wasn't real, have you watched a movie called Mississippi Burning now that WAS real, it was based on what actually happened in America on a regular basis, when you are going to make statements based on your own fantasy, you really should try to be closer to the facts,
America has never been a country where morals was high on the totem pole, hence they went to war with THEMSELVES,
They assassinated their own President at least FOUR times,
Smoking in every TV show and movies of the times was subliminally pushing drugs on children that killed millions,
America has always had the highest murder rates in the western world,
No America was never big on morals, what they were always the world champs at was BULLSHIT.....but what they are even better at....is believing BULLSHIT!
Why can't you just say I love this show, praise the show all you like, but don't get bogged down in fantasy
P.S. it was censorship that protected you from bad words, nothing to do with morals, they allowed cigarette advertising and even worse was subliminal advertising that killed many, many millions of Americans, does that sound like "high morals" to you?
Not to mention the animal cruelty in these old TV shows and movies, horses were just collateral damage
      Nuff said!

Very very good episode. Fear in a fearful situation is normal and a survival instinct. Here it is used by a manipulator to destroy innocent lives.
Excellent acting, beautiful story line, good writing.

Really good episode. We didn't get this series here in the UK but we did have Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Lone Ranger in the late 1950's and 1960's. I am enjoying watching this series for the first time. Thanks for posting.

This is the second episode of The Rebel I have seen, pretty good show, I am surprised I haven't seen it before, growing up in the 70's and all, westerns were pretty popular in the 60's and 70's, I used to watch the Rifleman, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza, regularly.

I just saw this episode tonight on Tubi and was really impressed with it. 20:14 to 23:35 is a slow building but powerful scene, climaxing with a burst of violence that was graphic for 1959.
"The Rebel" was considered one of the more violent Westerns of its time, and its popularity among juvenile delinquents was cited as one of the reasons why it was cancelled despite being a ratings hit.
    Great post...

Interesting life lesson. The men that shot Bussey were shooting at their own guilt. He was a scapegoat for all of them. Of course, life doesn't work that way. Your guilt is your own, no one else can carry it for you. Too bad some humans still haven't learned that.

Frontier Justice! ..for an evil violent scumbag. Sure wish that little girl had survived. This series really had a sharp edge to it. Perhaps a little too much edge or violence for that era....which might explain why it lasted only 2 seasons. Example": instead of just arresting the bad guy....They all take out their guns and keep shooting him...classic overkill...which may have caused adults , esp. with children to forego otherwise decent plots. This series , in other words, failed because it pushed the envelope too far for the sensibilities of most viewers in the 1950s.
