  • A very nice Heathkit receiver. This one looks like new. Operates as well. Has all 3 filters installed. Comes with the matching SB-600 speaker and original manuals. These were Heathkits line to compete with Collins twins. Great piece of history

Same unit as in the movie "Frequency". Watching it right now. Kinda weird seeing this model both here and there at the same time. It's like I'm ridin a similar sunspot as in the movie.

What a lovely looking Heathkit SB-301 receiver, with it's attractive two tone colour design, fab S meter, very nice ergonomics and narrow filters. It's still hard to beat a good old fashioned hand built steam radio tube receiver, for listening satisfaction at it's best.

I just picked one of these up for about $225.00. Not too bad a price and I can't wait to get it. I'd like to find an SB-310 one day also.

Nice radio. My first one was inherited from my uncle when he passed away. Got the entire matching Heathkit lineup from him. Try to fire it up at least once a week and enjoy it. A true boat anchor jem.

+MikesRadioRepair Yep, it is a great radio on CW and SSB. No drift that I can detect. Heathkit was a great company.

@@d-labelectronics Would love to assemble an untouched kit made by them.
But those are really expensive IF you find one, and I fear collectors would hunt me down and burn me on a stake if I do that ;).
Also, you would still have to replace the vintage capacitors and maybe even carbon composite resistors, which disturbs the experience significantly in my opinion.

Nice radio. I have had the set for almost 20 years, I am ashamed to say they haven't been turned on in a long time. I need to check my caps and get the set back into working condition. 73 N5UEB

In my experience with an SB-301, they have beautiful handling of strong signals on SSB and CW. I used to QSO with a friend of mine who was just two blocks away and his signal always pegged the S-meter, yet the audio from the SB-301 was always crystal clear.

That was many years ago..I had that RX and for TX I had a Johnson Viking Invader 2000...that thing was friggin' awesome, too! :-)
Back in 2002 my ticket expired... I gotta find a VEC and re-take the test and get back into the ham-loop :-)

The Invader 2000 was great for CW and SSB, but terrible for AM..(very limited audio quality and only one sideband was modulated ) I set up a relay and switch and would remotely bypass the SSB filter and that made beautiful full-sideband AM :-)

Operating the 2000 with the SSB filter bypassed and an un-amplified D-104 mic comes out great on AM. I also changed the grid-bias resistor on the microphone input amplifier tube's grid-to-ground to one of about 6 megs or so...that helps the D-104's bass response get through better. I even got the "Tim-Tron (WA1HLR) seal of approval" on the sound of that TX on AM.. he said it sounded great and that they normally sound "very yellowy" :-D

That is a beautiful piece. Thanks for showing. Did it have the converter installed, too? I'm assuming not, because you are thorough in your videos, and you didn't show it on this one.

+Chris Kelling Hello Chris, no sir, this one does not have the VHF converters. A very clean example of the SB-301. Wish I had the matching 401 TX, but these days I'm running only Johnsons+Nationals. Thanks for supporting me. TD

+umajunkcollector I only have a Collins 75A4 RX, I'd rather run my National receivers. Collins is good stuff, but not 1st choice for all
