    Depending on your Tele string spacing the big Joe Barden saddles (2 1/8-3/16") or the Gotoh compensated saddles (2 1/16") are really great. Bardens are tilted, Gotohs have sloped string grooves.

    I used to work for a famous repair man. His guitars were intonated perfectly, yet he would ask me to come over and play his guitar parts for some of his tunes because I "played" more in tune. You are right, despite what the tuner says some chords will be out of tune. Years of experience had taught me (and no doubt you) to unconsciously bend certain strings in the chord to make it be in tune. I have also learned that equal pressure on each string is important, especially with high frets, or you will inadvertently bend some notes out of tune. Lastly, as you point out, some guitars, like your Gretsch just sound in-tune while others will never sound quite right. My best guess is that it is down to the overtones emphasized by the materials and construction.

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  7 місяців тому +1

      You make a very good point about subconsciously bending strings ever so slightly within the chord….. yeah I do that!

    I see that chord leading to your iv (Fmin) as a F#13 no root. About a year ago I started practicing all of my single note stuff with upstrokes. It seems to help with everything overall when I’m ‘going for it’ by breaking up some of my old tendencies.

    Hi Paul, Happy New Year to you. I am so with you on the reliability of pedal tuners. Like you, I frequently find I have to override what my Petersen strobe tuner tells me is 'in' because my ears tell me it's not! And it's a moving target; different guitar, different tuning tweaks. It drives me nuts. All the best to you and yours for 2024.

I have the early 60s pickups in my Strat so I'm gonna make a hot pickup for the middle

    Love your mini rant on intonation Paul, it's been the bane of my guitarist life! You explain it so well, I've only played electric guitars since lockdown but now own and play a few, all good ones, and have already discovered what a compromise it all is......if I could I'd avoid playing F and A completely!(Sweet FA🤣) I'm now quite good at intonating to my taste, but how come all my acoustics, with no adjustment possible, all intonate perfectly?! Btw, excellent lesson too as always, happy 2024 mate

    Hi Paul, I think of the tense chord @ 14:50 to be a C7 altered (without the low notes) leading the ear to the Fmin9. So Cmin9 / C7 alt / Fmin9. The tensions in the altered chord are #9 and #5 in that voicing. It’s a great move.

    Ivor Thomas is right Uncle Paul he is playing F#7 which is implying a C dominant 7 sound which has a stronger pull to F-7 try using a dominant sound just before you go to any minor chord even if your playing a minor blues. Great stuff uncle. Keep jazzing it suits you sir.

    Enjoyable & informative as always, Paul - thanks. I’m currently struggling with a looper for the first time so this has probably stopped me from sending it back(!)
    As for the hum, I wonder if there’s a difference between the USA where the electrical supply is at 60 cycles, and here in the UK, where it’s 50 cycles? Just a thought, but I’m always surprised by American UA-camrs going on about ‘60 cycle hum’ being almost unbearable- perhaps 50 cycle hum isn’t as bad? No doubt someone out there will put me straight on that. Whatever, thanks again & keep it coming😀

    • @jonasgravlund9056
      @jonasgravlund9056 7 місяців тому

      @@paulstaffordcook8799 Nice! I find that flats work incredibly well for solid bodies and rounds work well for semi-hollows. Both have a different kind of an intimate sound - flats for their directness and rounds for more sound of string I guess.
      Also a JM was designed for heavy flats back in the day, so the combination makes sense.
      Lovely playing and great sense space and musicality! Thanks!
