    Glad you mentioned ceiling height. All these UST reviews never mention ceiling height or media cabinet heights. My media console became useless after buying a UST and basically it has to sit very close to the floor. Hopefully this is helpful for anyone getting one keep this in mind. The media consoles made for ust’s are extremely overpriced and hopefully we’ll see the price drop on those soon

    I decided not to use any ALR etc screens and hanged my Epson LS500 on a ceiling. I just covered my wall with titanium dioxide based coating (it's a grey paint that helps enhance perceivable contrast for projectors) and I absolutely love the result. It cannot deal with ambient light as great as dedaicated ALR of course so it's not a drop in replacement for all people, but for my use case it was ideal. Most of the time the image is vibrant and well saturated during the day, but if it's very sunny then I have to switch the projector from 2000 to 4000 lumens. During the night even with lights on it's just almost perfect.

    Seems like you just provided UST manufacturers a new model - UST ceiling mounted! It looks so much better than a standard ceiling mount in the center of the room and if you don't have access to run the cables it's a non-starter. If you don't have the space to put a entertainment center/TV stand out from the wall, the UST vendor just lost a customer to a flat screen. I can't imagine there would be too much engineering needed to make the image more adjustable to work with screen in any orientation at the proper viewing height, even if it meant mounting it out further on the ceiling than pulling furniture further into the room. Good review!

    I wish you could have done this ceiling analysis with normal screens, and not just alr/clr. Still hoping you be able to test that white high gain screen you mentioned before. And the advantage of a normal screen is you do t have to flip it, so you can replace your regular throw projector with a ust with minimal effort.

    Another solid video! You continue to put in the legwork daily to answer some very reasonable questions. I've been told that UST/ALR screens wouldn't work when inverted, and I was kind of like ... "But window light comes in from the side whether they are right side up or upside down... why wouldn't they work?" - and this seals the deal. Lenticular screens are perfectly fine for traditional window lighting from the sides if you must use a ALR screen at all. Right side up, or upside down, you get effective side light rejection. I can definitely see how having a white ceiling and windows is more problematic as the light will bounce off the ceiling a lot easier than carpet. Meh, beggars and such.
    Wondering - What mount length are you using? In your affiliate link, there are two lengths of mounts available. Are you using the shorter one or the longer one? I haven't tried that mount, and I'm a die hard Chief RPMAU fanboy, but Chief doesn't have any great UST mounts. I don't think any exist yet because height really needs to be built into the adjustments as well, but was wondering which version you got. Thanks!

    I knew that micro adjustable mounts were a thing but I never seen one like that! The ones I looked at needed multiple sections and extremely tall ceilings!
    To adjust the distance I actually took a small rectangular piece of plywood and drilled out four 3 inch slots and ran lag bolts with washers through the slots and into the ceiling so I could have fwd and bwd adjustment (figured I could also fine tune it a bit just by loosening or tightening the lag bolts).
    The only problem is that the AWOL is about 4 lbs heavier than my old ceiling mount is rated for. 😬
    Still waiting on the screen before the real fun begins.

    Very interesting, thank you! I wonder if putting a slight angle on the projector screen when ceiling mounting would help with any of the top hotspot issue. It makes sense that the light doesn't get reflected perfectly straight out, like you mentioned about the seating position.

  • @chrisminnoy3637
    @chrisminnoy3637 Місяць тому

    Mounting UST on the wall or ceiling above the screen makes THE most sense. Why aren't there ALR screens specifically made for that situation? Ofcourse you have to consider the angle: the light comes from above but must not be reflected direct horizontal with the screen but in a bit wider angle as the seats will be lower than the middle of the screen. This would imply a special screen, not the standard ones you have demonstrated here. Vividstorm claims they have such screens, but I have not found any review of them.

    Can you recommend a good motorized ceiling mounted ALR screen to compliment a ceiling mounted UST projector? I see plenty of floor mounted motorized ALR screens but they advise not mounting upside down. Ceiling mounted matte screens are also abundant, but then I lack benefits of ALR. Those ceiling mounted ALR screens I can find are limited and seem to all be for long throw projection. Any suggestions? In my room ceiling mounted is a necessity, and I'd prefer ALR due to a decent amount of natural daylight from the windows (not as much ceiling lights)

      It's about the viewer's eyeballs. The screens are designed with the intention that the viewer's eyes will be in the middle of the bottom 1/3 of the screen. When you flip the screen and projector upside down the viewer's eyes are now in the "top" 1/3 of the screen.

    This is great info, thanks! Based on these recommendations, I'll have to test out a couple scenarios for my niche use case.
    Our theater room serves dual purpose. It's a basement space with good light control and a 7-foot ceiling that we use primarily as a "rumpus room" for the kids to go crazy, but nights and special occasions for movies/events. The couches can all be moved easily to make lots of space to play or arranged for stadium seating (took the legs off one of them). I frequently hit my head on our old projector mounted in the middle of the room, so a UST resolves that. However the kids run around and bump into stuff, which makes a UST and its sensitive nature nearly impossible to keep aligned when sitting near the floor, not to mention the interference with my C/L/R setup. Ideally, my UST and retractable screen will be ceiling mounted: out of the way completely when the room is in "rumpus mode" and then perfectly aligned when in theater mode.

    • @TheHookUp

      Any chance you could recess the UST into the ceiling?

    • @nathanddrews
      @nathanddrews Рік тому

      @@TheHookUp That will depend entirely upon which projector I end up with, but maybe. When I remodeled the space in 2016, USTs were not of sufficient quality or price to be an option. I was only ever planning on mounting my screen in the ceiling, but now that USTs are really good... Here's a crude cross-section diagram of my ceiling joist spacing on the side of the room where the screen will be:
      || 13.5" || X || 14.5" || X || Wall
      The "X" is HVAC that basically fills the joist cavity, so there's no space in those. The 14.5" cavity is where I am going to flush-mount the retractable screen into the ceiling. The distance from the 13.5" cavity to the center of the 14.5" cavity is exactly 24". I have some wiggle room within that cavity for screen placement closer or farther than that, but basically to get the UST into the ceiling I need one that is less than 13.5" deep and can operate with a throw distance to the screen of ~24".

    • @paulvail7926
      @paulvail7926 Рік тому +1

      For what it's worth, I have an unfinished basement and my kids (10 years+ ago) were young and typical and shooting arrows in the basement and throwing around toys and such. I ended up getting a BenQ w1070, and one of the big reasons was that it fit between my ceiling joists. I ended up building a lift for it using a motorized car jack. It allowed it to go up and down and a 3/4" piece of plywood protected it while it was recessed between the joists. I also had/have a motorized tab-tensioned screen which could hide away completely when not in use.
      You very likely have more options than you realize, including UST. But, standard throw, with the right stuff, could still work if you enjoy the front projection setup.

    Thank you for your time! I have watched a ton of your videos probably all on USTs.
    I have 8ft ceilings but a 20x24ft room we sit 17ft from wall that would call for a 120in UST. But we are looking at ceiling mounting it. I'm thinking about buying a 120in screen and just going 100in on the projection that way I could always just adjust if I wanted a bigger screen. If I understood correctly being bigger and more center of the screen is a good thing with it being flipped (Would this look bad?) Maybe an idea for a video.
    This is a living room so it has Ambient light so my plan is go fresnel screen. (You call it the future in another video) Mainly side light and little glare on floor.
    The thing I'm wondering is if the AWOL 3500 is a little too bright/gain and maybe the Formovie maybe a sweet spot. I'm really struggling between the 2.
    Being I'm going ceiling mount and good low profile styles you can send me a link to. (maybe an idea for a video) I did see the one you used and like it. Just thinking with 8ft ceilings lower the profile the better.

One other thing to consider, if mounting them on the ceiling where there is a living space above it, there could be vibrations from people moving around that cause the image to vibrate around. Obviously if it concrete instead of wood framing, this may not be an issue.

    I am a High School teacher and I wanted to buy a projector to use in class because our school cannot afford one. I bought one for just over $50 on amazon but realized it doesn't work well in well lit classroom. Can you provide any recommendations?

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Рік тому

      Sure, you don't need a home theater projector, what you need is a WXGA or XGA bulb projector. Look on ebay for Epson, Viewsonic, BENQ and look for 3000 ANSI lumens or better. Most bulbs will last 3000-5000 hours, and used auctions will usually list the bulb life. I had this projector in my classroom and it was great: www.ebay.com/itm/266245437320?epid=26025892843

    Can you recommend a recessed drop down screen? Vividstorm makes many models and they might be able to put the material upside down as a special order?. Or they make a grey screen, which I assume would be unidirectional? I am trying to decide between a ceiling mount UST and a table mount lifestyle projector such as Hisense C1, where I would have to use about a foot of vertical keystone.

    Hello, another great video that you grace us with. I am more and more convinced by the purchase of the Formovie Fresnel screen. I understand from your video that this screen is subject to hotspots. Is it only with the ceiling mount configuration? Or have you already seen this phenomenon with the standard mount configuration?

      As I said in the video, in person I never once said "hmm, that looks like a hot spot", it was only in post when I was comparing the different footage that I noticed the bright spot top center.

    First, big fan of your videos and analysis.
    Just thinking but couldn't there be cooling issues by having an UST projector upside down? Kind of how in gaming PC builds people take into account the orientation of their case and the push/pull fan configuration for optimum cooling. Also some aftermarket coolers don't work well when upside down (like the Frost Giant coolers)
    Typical projectors have vents on both the top and bottom , I'm not sure what the venting is like on the majority of UST projectors. Probably not a huge deal but gives you a reason to bust out the thermal camera.

      @TheHookUp  Рік тому +1

      It's definitely possible I suppose. To make things even more confusing, Epson sells an official ceiling mount for the LS800 despite saying that it is not ceiling mountable.

    at this point might it not be better to use a long throw laser projector? 🤔
    I don't know if there are fresnel screens for long throws but combining a good screen with a jmgo n1 ultra seems like a pretty solid solution.
    any opinion on this projector? maybe even a video on long throw laser projector comparisons 😁?

      I just received a production unit (not a review sample) of the N1 Ultra yesterday. I've only had a couple hours to mess with it, but it does seem pretty solid. Not as bright as JMGO says, but VERY bright. Definitely the brightest lifestyle projector on the market so far by a significant margin. Full review and comparison should be out in early May when the next firmware update goes OTA.

    I would like to ask you to give me your suggestion regarding the projector, which will primarily be used at home, in a totally darkened room for watching cartoons and movies. I think it should be 4k, the models that are available in my environment are, xiaomi 4k laser, ViewSonic X10-4K, BOMAKER Polaris 4K, LG HU70LS 4K, BenQ W1800 4K, XGIMI Horizon, XGIMI Horizon pro, XGIMI Aura. These are some of the potential models, or if you have a favorite of yours, price and quality are important to me, and then aesthetics. For me, this is a lot of money and therefore an investment for a long period of time, which would improve over time from an ordinary wall to a quality canvas. So much from me, I thank you in advance for the answer, it is not the speed that is of crucial importance, but a smart recommendation, so when you arrive. Thank you

    Can you add a little more information about the grey screen tests? I didn’t understand what you were showing with the 4 screens. We’re they split like the prior evaluations? Also, can you confirm that the side lighting condition was worse on the grey screen than on the Spectra Vantage? By worse, I’m assuming that you mean higher black levels, as I think that the grey screen brightness should have been much brighter than the 0.55 gain SV screen. Thanks!

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Рік тому +1

      The gray screen got the same tests, the left side of each quadrant is the ceiling mount, the right side is the floor mount. Conditions are:
      Top left: Zero light
      Top right: 15 degree ambient light
      Bottom left: 45 degree ambient light
      Bottom right: side (parallel) ambient light

    • @michaelcollins4468
      @michaelcollins4468 Рік тому

      So if I’m understanding you correctly, you didn’t do any side by side comparisons with the other screens, you just showed each lighting condition with the screen flipped for each half. It doesn’t seem to do a bad job with the parallel light. Can you explain why it was the worst? Seems like the brightness should have been better than the 0.55 gain screen. Just trying to understand your thinking. Thanks!

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Рік тому +1

      If you check out my last video, the spectra is nowhere near .55 gain, I measured it closer to .8, and the Formovie was above 1.5. When I measured the silver ticket (1.0 gain listed), it was about 0.95.
      I think the increased contrast due to the lenticular CLR leads to a greater perceived brightness, even if it is technically not as bright.

    You mentioned something that has been holding me back... Center Channel position. In your setup you said you solved this with the retractable screen...but are any of these screens Acoustically transparent? Right now I have been running traditional projectors with a DIY acoustically transparent screen. In the next year I wanted to upgrade to 4k and have been looking at the BenQ x3000i as I primarily play games, then movies, then TV Series. But the allure of bright laser projectors w/ an ALR is extremely tempting as I find dark scenes meh right now.
