These sorts of videos are great for preservation. It is cool that you go over every detail. Often times, review videos for devices don't show all the buttons, ports, and other connectivity, which are things that are cool to look back on in the future when our technology is entirely different.
Very true. When I think of the mp3 players I had in the early 2000s, they already seem like ancient tech, but what a quantum leap it was from the thick CD Walkman with unreliable anti-shock. It's part of our technological history now.
There's something so charming about technology from back then, all the devices would have different functions. Nowadays everything is on phones, which are all essentially the same. Might be just nostalgia though.
I've dreamed of having a mordern version of a device like this that would automatically dump any photos from an SD card onto my google photos (probably using a wifi connection). My ideal device wouldn't even necessarily need a screen, perhaps just a progress bar to indicate copying, uploading, and complete. If the device scanned for photos that haven't already been uploaded and just copied those, even better. I think it could help bring (any, not just wifi enabled) digital cameras into the modern world, allowing people to start using cameras again rather than their phone without the hassle of fluffing around with apps and computers.
Wouldn’t it help to have that feature in the camera itself and bypass the need of an additional device? Given the hardware capabilities these days, the functionality can be added to a single core while also leaving enough resources for various other features to run. Cameras can even be made to fit a SIM card, much like an iPad does, or simply pair with your hotspot. I believe, the latter already exists.
Well that device already exists! It's just that in the spirit of miniaturization, your SD card, ImageTank and cellphone have all fused together into a "smart phone". Yes, you can automatically backup all your photos to the cloud as soon as you take the picture, or wait until you cannot to your home wifi to automatically upload them either to your computer or cloud or even both! Now, if you're the type of person who likes to use a dedicated, high resolution camera and save your pictures to SD card, then you're kinda SOL, as even the super high-end cameras don't really have any wifi capabilities, and even if they did, it would take forever to transfer RAW files over wifi anyway.
@@shippo72 Well, there are USB-C card readers that work flawlessly when plugged into an Android phone... So yeah, all you need nowadays is your phone and a small pocket card reader, then you can upload your raw pictures from the camera SD card into the cloud, via VPN to your NAS at home or post them on Instagram. Whatever pleases you most :)
This channel is criminally underrated. I love your unique sense of humor and that you go into the details that most shows don't bother with. It's not boring at all and your production is superb. I really hope you continue to do these random videos and grow the channel.
I, as a Technology Connection viewer, feel underestimated in my ability to watch someone do pedantry on old technologies. You're not boring! (At least, to me), and I can watch you talk about old tech for 20+ minutes! I did that for Technology Connection!!
Hey, I've been a big fan of your videos since the the DSM LCD video and i've really enjoyed the content on the channel. I hope you continue making more videos about these interesting "nothing" or as you like to say "boring" aspects. like a 99% invisible but for old tech and audio.
I have a weird nostalgia for this era of electronics when things were getting a lot smaller and easier to travel with, but still quite hefty and thick. My first MP3 player, the Creative Nomad Zen, I bought for $700 in 2002 had a similar form factor, an aluminum shell and a 20GB hard drive. It felt so nice to hold.
i was sleepy before watching this, but cuz of the generations gap, it almost feels like im watching a youtuber unboxing and reviewing a new tech even though its exist earlier than me
I don't know why you think your videos are boring, but your videos are pieces of art in my opinion. This is a production style i have never come across. The bgm gives your channel a special character that's unique and your art style in most other videos is rarely seen in a tech channel! Keep making more!
I love this video because it feels *almost* more like it’s a fake video about some weird tech that’s meant to conceal the *real* video which is just a joke about him being very passive aggressive about people calling his videos boring. as opposed to what it actually is which is just a madman finding a weird thingy and raving about it- and also being passive aggressive in the background
I could easily imagine a modern version of this perhaps using a high capacity laptop hard disc or SSD. It could maybe run a version of Android for ease of getting an OS and just have a custom app to manage the backup functions. Plug it into a computer and it turns up as a couple of drives, one being the android storage and the other being the hard disc itself. Maybe even have a docking station so that the user could have it as a digital photo frame while its transferring large amounts of data on your desk. But yeah, I kinda want a modern one to be a bit more than just an external hard drive.
I wonder about an improvised one using a Raspberry Pi and battery/touchscreen, with some kind of storage solution, like even an SSD connected by a USB-to-SATA adapter. A dedicated one though could use an ARM CPU, maybe some kind of really light embedded Linux or BSD build to save on RAM, and perhaps even something like RAID-1. Connect 2 HDDs or SSDs so the data can be loaded on both, so if one dies, you still have the other!
I used to use old android phones with expandable storage for exactly that. I mean its still possible with modern smartphones too. It has everything you need. An OS, an user interface, possible internet connection and lots of theoretical space- Old Phones even a replacable battery.
Reminiscent of the Archos AV300 which I used for years, with all the extras - memory card adapters, video camera, and upgraded to an 80GB HDD. Probably the greatest Archos ever.
Your videos are interesting, funny and I always learn something. I appreciate the effort put into them. Look forward to seeing more. Sending power and blessings from Melbourne Australia
It is kinda funny that I already knew of this concept because the Palm LifeDrive (which came out in 2005) had this feature. In 2005 Palm changed from everything being run in RAM to actually having some NAND flash storage and loading things into RAM to run it. For the LifeDrive they wanted a ton of space on it but back then it was still pricy so they went with a MicroDrive. It was 4Gb and for a Palm that was actually massive. Even for point and shoot cameras of the day it was impressive enough. In fact you can change the MicroDrive out for a much more huge CF card, add an SDHC driver and still get a bit of use out of it.
no it was not boring, i discovered your channel with it and i loved it ! i also like geeking and nerding on stuff like that and i learn so many new interesting stuff. Plus your cinématography and sound design are incredible. 💜💜
I like how you pretend to try making the video as boring as possible, but in fact it has the exact opposite effect! x) If I were to get my hands on such gadget, I'd most likely do the same thing that you did on the video: scrupulously exploring every single item in a package, every function/button/part of the interface to get the full understanding of how it works and what it is capable of. Was a nice video to watch :)
The im a get ank was interesting. There is a world shortage of Copper, probably because of the megaton of cables we all have (noncontextually) in the bottom drawers of our desks. I would love to recommend this channel to my friends but I know they will only ask "what is it about?". I have very unadventurous friends.
Im gonna be honest, that intro made me subscribe. Hope to see more "boring" videos like this in the future! Edit: With more "extra boring" parts please!! They're my favorite

This device kinda reminds me to the Archos AV 700 I bought back in 2007. But the Archos AV 700 had an encrypted hard drive which could not be replaced so easily and it didn' have an FM receiver and a built in microphone.
Don’t change anything with these videos. You can refine many different aspects. But this is the 3rd review I have seen along with a couple others. You got another sub. 👍
“And now for the boring part… the rest of this video…” 😂 That made me laugh out loud haha. You call it boring, but I see it as my favorite part… the entire video ❤
This would still be useful today. It should support SD, SDHC, SDXC, SDUC, CFast, CFI, CFII cards. Use a SATA connection for the internal drive. A 2TB SATA based SSD is cheap these days and if the device used a good Li-Ion Po battery it could last a good amount of time. Perfect for a pro photographer who would fill up their cards quickly. It would need to run a basic version of linux not only for security reasons, but to make it cheaper(no windows CE licensing fees) It would as you mentioned it, be small, light an battery life would be good these days. Bonus if it has WiFi or 4G ability so it can also sync photos to your cloud backup.
always thought these were cool. makes sense to be able to browse your files on the drive itself . like a gadget in a movie. I guess small tablets and a bunch of adapters are probably more useful than this now

Yah definitely. I think we just love lil gadgets, even if it's more practical to have everything in one place.
