When you create a RAID array with different sized disks the smallest disk will "decide" how large the volume will be. You loose 1.5TB on each 2TB drive when you did a RAID 0 with all the drives. So it's better to do a RAID array with only the 500GB drives and a second array with only the 2TB disks.

This is a really good idea, especially if you're always editing footage, i'm going to be doing something a little newer for business use, but for home use i could see this working very well. Also, used a newer one of these, slapped in some xeon x5650's and a gtx 980ti, and boom absolute beast of a workstation pc.

Cool, I have been debating about how exactly I would be able to configure the disk shelfs. Haven't played with them much so wasn't sure if I would need an HBA with external SAS connectors for each shelf or if I could daisy chain them. I am guessing it depends on which units you get though. Working on my long term plans for Chia storage once I fill up the drives I have on hand.

We built one like this for a corporate customer, 100TB, Sever and 2 x rackmount boxes like those 36 x 3TB hdds. they were connected via those single cables in the back. it was a solid setup until someone was messing with the server and disconnected 1 of the daisy chain cables while the PC was on and copying data.

    Hi,
I now also have a Netapp ds2246 shelf with 24 SSD disks. The SSDs are also original Netapp disks. I have an LSI MegaRAID SAS 9286CV-8e as the controller. When starting the server it also recognizes the disks, but if I want to start the Bios Web Gui of the controller when booting the server, the surface hangs when Self is connected. Do you have any idea what that can be?

In the past (before the web) I had trouble re-formatting some IDE drives. FDISK would go through the motions and I could format the drive but the data was still there on the HDD, as if I had done nothing. The solution was to go into the BIOS and configure the drive with the wrong geometry then run FDISK and Format the drive. After it was finished I changed the geometry to the correct parameters and FISK and Format the drive correctly. I didn't happen often but it was very weird.

    Hi there! :)
I know it is not related to this video but I have some questions regarding ESXI - hope you don't mind!
I am currently in a team (hobbyists) who setup networking and servers for a lan party next weekend (150-200 people). The switches are all configured but we are currently discussing whether it makes sense to use ESXI and create individual VMs or we should just setup one system and use docker to spin up all our stuff (one samba file server, 10 parallel running CSGO server and maybe a teamspeak server for 100 people). Do you have any suggestions?
We have a sun XFire with 4 quadcore CPUs and 128GB Ram - that should be plenty!
    Cheers,
    Matthias

When I get to renovate the front of the house and extend the basement, the new part will have enough height to put the rack down there but until then its going to be painful to listen to.

I am overwriting them (with badblock from e2fsprogs) using 4 patterns (0xaa 0x55 0xff 0x00) and then doing full long smart test
sometimes I am getting 520 or even 528 block sizes on HDDs and then I need to format those HDDs

And the Raidcontroller isnt doing "weird stuff" ... When you create a Raid with mixed Drives you'll get the size of the smalles Drives for all Drives ... in your example 48*600gb.
But i dont think a big Array with SAS and SATA Drives mixed would be a great Idea anyways. But 1 Array for each Shelve should be good to go.

It wouldn't be that bad. My server has 16 disks in it, and is usually doing video encoding. Costs me less than $40 a month in power. I guess if you want this ancient tech with tiny drives, requiring multiple cabinets... I went with a Skylake W Xeon. I bought 8x 6TB drives, and still have in my other 6x 3TB and 2x 2TB drives, which the latter will be gone eventually. Yeah, expensive because it's newer. But saving money for something I want is a lot better than being surprised with an insane electric bill every month. I had an i7-970 before. The power use was higher and I got less encoding done. The new CPU is almost 3x as fast.

you can't strip across two different disk sizes. thats why your getting weird issues. it will take the smallest drive and let you strip that size. You can use all the drives but you only get the smallest drives. Better to use the 500GB drives in one lun and the 2TB disk in another lun. You likely already know this. Just waiting for you to drop a snarky comment. :)

Does it really make sense in 2019 to use drives that are less than 1 TB in size? I mean modern 6+ TB drives have platters with much higher data density so you get faster data transfers and the power consumption is lower.
Just taking the 600 GB... datasheet says they use all 8 surfaces of 4 platters for 600GB of data, goes between 120..198 MB/s and consume up to 16 watts of power - a modern datacenter/nas drive can get close to 300 MB/s and consume about half as much power. In addition to this, why not use something like RAID6?
I can see it and understand if it's just to have fun with them but where's the threshold "paying too much in electricity and noise and data safety vs fun" ?

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  4 роки тому

      Hi mariushmedias
Thank You very much! NO this is not the way to go any more,, You would still use smaller super fast SAS drives to get faster IO,, but now we have SSD,, and that is way faster for that,, so this box would be great to fill up with 10TB's.

Install Ubuntu and then you have a really nice desktop workstation for Blender animation software. - just keep server in a separate room and run cables through the wall to eliminate noise. I personally dont use raid controllers because if they mess up it is very hard to recover data from drives. i just use the onboard sata ports. I am wondering if its possible to use high quality SAS drives using SATA ports and cables ???

ZFS RaidZ with no hardware RAID sounds like a plan for this host to me...

      Hi Robert Putt
It's cheaper,, just like using the build in Graphics card is,, who needs that hardware accelerated performances.

@@MyPlayHouse Thank you for your reply, sure I understand where you are coming from and it depends on use case and budget, however ZFS has some advantages over traditional RAID for example using SSD and RAM you can have larger L1 and L2 caches than are traditionally provided by a RAID controller, and RAID is not as intelligent as ZFS as it has no hash map of the drive, so if one mirror becomes corrupted the RAID controller may serve corrupted blocks where as ZFS can detect these anomalies and fix the faulty side of the mirror. Also I have seen some very performant ZFS deployments out there but it really depends on budget, expertise of the deployment engineers etc... Furthermore ZFS allows you to use mixed size disks in one array, and allows you to upgrade disk sizes as you renew failed disks through it's resilvering technique, so this machine could have had one big array rather than 4 little ones.

You said you low-level formatted the drives; in fact you cannot low-level format modern hard disk drives, their firmware just wouldn't allow it.
Also how exactly did the '$100' come up in the title? $1000 seems more reasonable I think. If it was given away to you for free that's another story.
Other than that quite interesting, it would be nice to see how it performs with ZFS.

    1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1000 Bytes
    1 Kibibyte (KiB) = 1024 Bytes
    ...
    1 Terrabyte (TB) = 1000 Gigabyte (GB)
    1 Tebibyte (TiB) = 1024 Gibibyte (GiB)

You should look into Gigabytes vs Gigibytes, the official standard for a Gigabyte is 1000 bytes, however a Gigibyte is 1024 bytes, this needs to become common knowledge and informing a UA-cam audience with ill-informed knowledge doesn't help the situation

My PlayHouse That is true, the industries lack of educating its people and the wider public doesn't help, the standard was originally set in 1998, by 2007 all current standards organisations for the technology industry had adopted it, the problem is that operating systems read in 8 byte format so consumers end up confused and frustrated due to feeling misguided by product details, it's a mix of educating and using the correct terminology when advertising products, pronunciation is crucial to ensuring reduced confusion, as both words sound incredibly similar, thanks for replying and thanks for the videos you do, I've only recently discovered your channel and I am so far enjoying watching your content, currently wanting to get into a career in IT, got a few ideas but nothing concrete yet, thanks again

      Hi Marco2G
Well now they are Lenovo servers,, they are according to me the best High end Enterprise server,, for Home Server 24/7 server,, not as much. But IBM/Lenovo servers are the most Operation stable server on the market. For fun and games,, go with whatever,, mission critical,, look for an Lenovo server. I have managed about 150 of these x3650 M1,, never had none die,, HD Yes, a Ram blok Yes. but never a totally dead server. They are being traced in 100% working order after 10-11 years of running 24/7.
