I am an IT Consultant, also a programmer since 1969 FORTRAN, COBOL originally when I was a senior in high school.... I'm really OLD....
Anyway I worked for a while at a server farm, and i learned that most servers run 80GB HD
because that is the optimal speed for them, actually this server you had in your hand is probably a set of 10 servers, also speed is 15000 rpm, they are expensive, and they used a fiber optic connector for the network. I know that the RAM is also special, 128gb for the new servers is about 15,000 USD
The data is stored in storage and backup servers that usually have more than 400 80gb each one is about $200 each HD, and they in turn connected to a robotic virtual backup server.
All data centers are different, they may have higher capacity drives, depending on what they actually do.
My knowledge is from ONE data center I worked at for a little while, most of my life I worked for myself.
Loved the 775 to 771 CPU exchange

Morten, it would be great to see a video on how you mount the rack rails, especially the IBM ones. The HP rails work fine for me, but the IBM rails seem too short to mount them. Also, how do you lift up heavy servers like the x3850 into the rails all by yourself? I nearly broke my back putting up my DL580s... .
Keep up the good work, Morten!

Hey there, absolutely love your channel. Its really cool to see how big of a system you can setup in a household. I actually have a bit of a question for you, if you have some time. I work as a computational chemist here in the United States, and we use a software called GROMACS to run protein simulations. Recently, I managed to acquire 15 NVIDIA GTX 760 graphics cards for cheap, and I figured this would be the perfect time to build a computation farm like how I've been wanting to for a few years now. Unfortunately, I'm very new to server hardware. I know that its rare to find older hardware that has PCI-E x16 board edge connectors, so I'm really excited to see how your experiment goes with the x16-to-x8 adapter. Do you have any preliminary results that you'd be willing to share?
My main question is, would you happen to know of any older servers that you feel would be well suited for housing double-width graphics cards? I've been looking on eBay for some cheap deals. I found a nice lot of HP ProLiant DL380 G7 and G6, do you think they would be good for GPU housing? I also found some x3650 M2 and M3s, not sure if those would be better. My main issue is the PCIe x16 thing, but if the adapter works well, then simply finding servers that can fit the cards becomes the problem (I already plan on having external power supplies for the cards, since I doubt I'll be able to find servers that can power 2-3 cards at a time.)
Also, for a beginner storage solution, what would you recommend? (I probably only need 5-10 TB of storage max, but I'd definitely like it setup in RAID so I don't loose any valuable simulation data). Thank you for your time, and thank you for all your awesome videos! I hope that you keep finding awesome deals on equipment!

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  8 років тому +2

      Hi Jon
Thanx for movin you question in here.
Putting a GPU in a server is a rather new thing,,, so there is not a lot of old server equipment available for it. To put in those NVIDIA GTX 760 graphics cards,, you need a lot of space and power in the server ,,both the 6 pin and the 8 pin power connector.
That removes the x3650 M2 and M3 from your list :-/
I think you get to this cheapest by setting up the 15 cards out side the servers,,,somthing like this : ua-cam.com/video/TtBw_p_NU00/v-deo.html
For you storages,,, this is a cheat solution : ua-cam.com/video/nlT85Xf1AsQ/v-deo.html and install it with VM-ware ESXi 6.0 and make a virtual storages server with XPenology like i do here: ua-cam.com/video/_QRCOTUSy5o/v-deo.html
And it can run a lot more VM's for you :-)
      Thank you for watching! :-)

Have a DELL PowerEdge T430 and it actually has 2 designated x16 PCI-e slots and there is also 2 PCI-e power connector for any graphic cards that use that, which is all modern. I was surprised to say the least. I'm in full mode to install a graphic card in it for fun and test to see if it work to play om. Most likely won't be able to utilize anymore than 1 cpu or the two but would be fun to test anyway. And it is also so free in the chassi where the cards would go that a graphic card could be almost long as the entire computer, you don't see that in a home pc.

Are there disadvantages of memory blocks being installed in memory cartridges? Sure it's easier to maintain, but the last block seems to be really far away from the processor, where the memory controller is. Also there's the connector which sure adds noise to the signal.Or that's why ECC memory started in servers?

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  8 років тому +1

      Hi +Murphistic
Both are right,, and you also have the cartridges that can brake,, so it is not all good. But that said, I have only had bad MEM blocks in servers like this,,, and should a cartridge brake,, it is a lot easier to change then a system board. But Yes more complexity,, more links in the chain to be bad.

Hi Morten, I am thinking of growing up speed of the machine IBM 3850 M2, but I do not know if de HDD of IMB 3850 M2 is SATA1, SATA2 o SATA3 as depend on max speed of de bus from HDD of the mother board. In case SATA1 i am not going to get enought extra speed.
¿ Do you known the vesion of SATA is it? I tried to check it from everest to know de bus speed, Crystal Mark Info does not work and I do not know how to find it.
In case of beig SATA1, I will go by next way. SSD PCIe 1.0 o SSD PCIe 2.0 as the IBM 3850 lets 4Gbps or 500Mbps by x8slot.So I am sure the version PCIe from IBM 3850 mother board is PCIe V.2. I will use to work 4 units PCIe, to plug in 4 slots PCIe x8 with 120GB each Ram disk as 3850 M2 does not lets up to higher than 146Gb per SAS being 4x 146Gb thinking on an overview to try to boot system from them.

    Heyhey,
Im looking forward to get a server to play arround with (get into linux server, using it to make a blender network-render cluster etc...learning new things). At that point i had allready made my choice to get a HP proliant DL580 G5 with 4x Xeon E7420 CPU's and 32 GB of RAM for 210€ after taxes. Thinking it was quite a good deal...but now, after seeing your video, im somehow unsure...maybe you could tell me what you think about the DL580 for that price? =)
Maybe you could start something like a video series of server harware you suggest? Like giving recommendations for file servers, host servers, render servers and so on? Would be great! Keep up your good work! =)

      Hi David Seiwald
      I am afraid I do not know the HP DL580 G5 :-/
If you want a cheap good server to play with. I made a video talking about that : ua-cam.com/video/p2lGufUYIZw/v-deo.html
But if you want a 24/7 server that has to stay in your room under your bed :-) maybe go more this way : ua-cam.com/video/TqoazLMZNXY/v-deo.html
      Thank you for watching! :-)

Thank you very much =) i think i'll give the DL580 a try anyways (letting you know how it works if you are interested). Your recomendation is nice and propably the most versatile server you can get, but for my use case i am looking into something with more processing power. As it wont run 24/7 i dont mind the power consumption and the noise. =)

great video.. got a question for you.. I have recently bought myself a Dell Poweredge 2950 Model 2, And everytime i boot it, it says "battery fault blah blah blah".... what does the internal battery pack actually do?
Because as far as i can tell, it doesnt do anything.. I can power my server off by the mains, and plug it back in 2 days later, and its all fine still.. cheerrs

      Hi
Check if it's the little 2032 li-ion battery for the Bios,, they are so cheap that you just get a new one.
If it's the battery for the raid controller... they can be a bit expensive... so maybe make a Hack repair on that.
      Thank you for watching! :-)

yeah its the battery pack that connects into the PERC 5i controler, that the BIOS reports as dead/not connected..
I was planning on hacking it open and soldering in another LI-Ion pack..
But was wondering what its for?
I unplugged the server for over 1 week, and no settings had changed.
I used a volt meter to check the battery pack, it shows 0.30v so definately not taking any charge..
      Thankyou for your help

      Hi gamerdude1989
You get a lot better disk performances, with the raid controler battery.
      Thank you for watching! :-)

Would this model be suitable for mild game server hosting (specifically CSGO and other valve games)? I am currently looking into buying a dedicated server but I am at a loss when it comes to deciding on the correct model.

      Hi Kasper Holm Hansen
I really do not know,, what would you expect from a game server?
      Thank you for watching! :-)

    • @kasperholmhansen8812

Normally I'd say one core and one gigabyte of ram per server, but it fluctuates a lot depending on plugins, the amount of players per server and tick-rate (update rate for player positions, etc).
Also, besides running game servers, I would have to run at least two web servers and a MySQL server for game statistics.
Another question: Is it possible to turn off features to save power? I'm thinking of turning off memory slots and maybe a processor if it's unused.
      Thanks in advance.

This server is a bit,, no it is a lot power hungry!! it will suck you dry! 5-600 watt.
