I forget which author interview I was watching, but this is a great way to get over writer's block. End your session in the middle of a big scene because you aren't going to forget what you were doing with it, and you'll start your next session with momentum.

Thanks for this, was good to hear some brutal truths from two writers who I admire

Yes, brutal truths are important to hear, especially because the business can be rather demanding and cutthroat at times. We hear all these romantic bromides about the writer's life, but it's a tough industry to break into. That said, once you're in and you've developed those skills, I imagine it's a rewarding way of life. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the kind words. I am so excited to start reading Five Warrior Angels. I'm starting it tomorrow and it seems like it's going to be right up my alley. I'll probably read one more sample chapter of my book before sending out to agents, so look out for that. Cheers!

This was a great discussion, Jordan and co. I have written a fantasy novel called A Plague of Nightmares and I'm not entirely sure what to do with it once I get to the publishing stage. There are things that are appealing about trad publishing and indie publishing, but I'm not sure which one I want to do at the moment. I am writing a western at the moment that I think might do better in the trad publishing space. If writing the damn thing wasn't stressful enough, once you've finished it you're in a whole heap of more stress.
An interesting mini-discussion on the idea of 'sensitivity readers.' Personally, I am mixed on it and I think there's some more nuance to the discussion than some might give credit for. My kneejerk response to the idea of sensitivity readers is the idea feels disingenuous to me. It sounds really arrogant to me for people to demand that I write to a certain demographic and making sure I don't offend anybody. I'm sorry, but great art should be able to challenge you and I don't want to be writing for a committee.
Yet at the same time, I don't want to writing racial stereotypes or the like. I want to depict people as authentically as I possibly can. I don't think that the idea of sensitivity readers doesn't have to be a bad thing, but I think the responsibility lies in the author's hands and I think the author should be able to choose how to depict their characters. It's a discussion I hope to have on my own channel as soon as I can.
Keep up the good work Jordan! Also I hope you got my message, but in case you didn't I'll mention it here. Are you planning to publish your book traditionally or are you planning to go the self-pub route?

Thanks for watching, Britton. It's very cool that you're doing so much writing. How fun, too, that you're writing a Western. There are definitely elements of Western fantasy in my book. There are about four chapters in there that are very Cormac McCarthy-inspired. I appreciate your nuanced take on sensitivity readers, even if I myself do not share it. I'm categorically against the practice for a variety of reasons, not the least being its chilling, and creativity-dampening, effect.
As for publishing, I hope to get published traditionally, which is why I'm going to be sending this book out to agents in the coming weeks and months. How about you?

Great art should be challenging, but that means having a purpose for the really challenging stuff.
Otherwise you’re gonna write Terry Goodkind levels of t*rture p*rn, etc.
Understand that times have changed, you can’t tokenize minorities anymore, you can’t speak about women like they’re pieces of meat anymore, understand those things and deal with the way life moves on, or feel free to pick up your toys and go home.
