Democracy is in peril, struggling to defend itself in the new age of social networks. Hardcore Christian nationalism is surging worldwide. Nationalist parties that reject identity freedoms and cosmopolitan values have shifted from the fringes to the mainstream. Religious nationalism shapes obligations among people based on race, ethnicity, and religion, inevitably excluding those labeled as the “other.” Our democracy now stands at a critical juncture: the rule of civil law versus the dominance of hardcore religious beliefs. We are in a race-democracy versus totalitarianism. Donald Trump is merely a puppet in the hands of Project 2025 architects; as long as they continue to feed his manic ego, he remains fully maneuverable. The sooner democracy gets itself together and adapts to the new paradigm, the better.
And the rest is now up to US!
So far, he's saved us. MAGA is still a danger to freedom. We need more judges to back him up.

I am big time lefty but have come to greatly admire Judge J. Michael Luttig. I am inspired by people with astounding positive character traits.
I, as well, a registered Democrat and full-fledged liberal, greatly admire this learned man's integrity. Shortly after his appearance on the world stage (J6 hearings), when asked to opine on our Supreme Court's decisions, he was understandably reticent to do so, out of his respect for the court itself and the justices. I appreciated his respect for the institution; he wouldn't be casting aspersions on them (at least publicly). Fast-forward to today -- he's not holding back AT ALL. He's very clear about the unrecognizable Republican party and their standard-bearer. The gravity of the corruption of the Grand Old Party and willful destruction of our democracy is hardly noticed by millions of Americans, yet we can see it is breaking his heart. Yes, his life-long Republican heart. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Weston. (Also, kudos to Liz Cheney on her refusal to stay silent as well!)

Judge Luttig is a one of several heroes on January 6th. Praises for his wife Elizabeth for encouraging him to speak out. Another hero that I learned of here is Mike Pence's son. Lt. Michael J.Pence USMC who told his father VP Pence that he must preside over Congress on January 6th, 2021 to execute his duty to his Oath to Uphold the Constitution of the United States. You don’t know me, and likely, as a liberal Democrat, we would not see eye to eye on a great many things, except the most important one of all: the sacredness of our Constitution and of American democracy. Without that, there is nothing else. You are a true Conservative, sir. History will judge you as the hero you rightfully are.

this interview should be played in every civics class in every school and in every journalism class in every journalism school and in every law school introductory class and every class on constitutional law in every law school and to every public servant at every level including all elected officials in every jurisdiction up to and including all members of congress, the white house and scotus, too, including all their staffs in all jurisdictions throughout the land.
