The Volkswagen Caddy is the dominant light commercial van in Australia. Starting again for the fifth generation from the ground-up on a new platform is a bold move, and as a result the fifth-generation VW Caddy arrives with an extensive lineup, but taller-than-ever pricetags.
Is this bold move justified, or will it force buyers to look elsewhere? We've taken a comprehensive look at the Caddy 5 range to find out.
We'll look at the refreshed cost and features, the new cabin tech, the practicality on offer, and take a close look at the load area and customisable options from the factory - always a Caddy strong point.
We've also had a chance to drive the new four-cylinder diesel TDI 320 engine to see if it is an improvement on the outgoing van. This engine comes with a tweaked seven-speed torque converter this time around. Will it prove beneficial for city-bound delivery drivers?
Finally, we'll round out our review with a look at the safety and ownership offer, including warranty and service costs over the first five years of ownership. Has VW moved the envelope forward with safety? In this poorly served segment, are there finally some standard active safety items?
Make sure to keep an eye out on our TradieGuide site section, too, to stay up to date with our latest reviews. In the future we'll also be able to bring you a test closer to this new car's GVM to see how it will handle heavier-duty demands.

One of my favourite vans in the market and I think it should be the best one currently on sale in Australia.
Great comprehensive review Tom.
really well done, great video!
I own a 2014 Highline Caddy Maxi and compared the new cab looks very plastic and less refined but the wide side doors look a great improvement.
Hellow, what I liked in the new version of vw caddy is the new rear suspension where the helicoidal coil springs come in remlacement to the hard leaf springs, it is a plus for the comfort of the rear passengers.
The rear load area looks very tight for those pallets, especially when most owners will ply line the rear end. Will the pallets still fit.
Great video. PLEASE set up a channel on Od - y - See, I've had a gut full of YT censorship.
They've overdone it with the price though considering its still 70% a metal bucket.t.
Why no 4motion for Australia ?
Mine has arrived and will collect it in two weeks…ordered in June
How do you like your new VW? I just ordered mine yesterday.
@@sunisa73 I am loving it everyday more and more 👍🏻
...think i might like it
Having owned a Caddy the only problem I see is availability looking forward to buying one but there's just none in the country at the moment it's a shame I wish the Volkswagen Australia will get there together so we can actually buy one thanks for the review
7 months later and you still need to wait until 2024
I have the 120 HP 7 speed auto one. And I love it!!!
How did you afford it?
@@georgegreen6899 I just pay'd for it. I needed an new van for my work . And yes ,they dont come cheap.
@@martinvanderwolf9583 sounds dodgy. Where did you get the funds to pay for it?
@@georgegreen6899 drugs mate
@@PiOfficial yeah that’s what I assumed
i select this
Oh ! Now I prefer it than Citan.
Strange how there are no Japanese vans available in the VW Caddy size.
In Europe they have a Smaller Toyota Van ProAce but Not in australia
@@martynulldrei2887 Pro Ace would be successful in Australia.
@@jd4062 yes it pisses me a Bit that I must Chose between a Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot expert/Partner or Caddy in The Small Van section or I must Upgrade to a bigger Van but that s more expensive to Run. I Like my Caddy, has now 200,000 km Had to Change The egr valve and Water Pump after The VW Dealer Sold it to me. But i Like The Drive and The Low fuel expenses
@@jd4062that’s not Japanese it’s made by Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall
The 4motion is available in European countries but here it's not going to be.. it seems yet again Australia gets only certain vehicles .. just as the dodgy fuel in this country (dirty fuel vs cleaner euro emissions quality)..
As for the pay in advance services .. WTF.
is the braking super sensitive like every other vw?
From what I remember pedal feel in this car is very similar to the concurrent Golf, so if you find that sensitive, this will be the same. - I will say you get used to sensitive (or even less sensitive) brakes pretty quickly, within a week or so of daily driving. -Tom
@@carsguide cheers mate!
i have brand new caddy 2022 all cheap plastic, no carplay or android auto, and only 74hp, tin can all around scary to leave my tools in
I checked the price of this van. OMG. Who would pay over 60K for this golf based van??
VLogging hipsters 'doing' Australia
My VW Caddy had 12 injectors changed and it has only done 57,000 miles. Never again a VW for me. There is no mention of this in the review even though it is common knowledge in the trade. It is this connection with the vow that prevents me to purchase the Ford. Why do the reviews never give honest views? Perhaps because it is sponsored by the manufacturers and those doing the reviews have sold their souls kissing the backside of those paying them to do the review.
I had the old one TDi250 with the Cheating software 😊 very versatile and practical and came with the Fuel injection failures.. Never again will I purchase a VW.
Yes their ethical decisions are remarkable and entirely set out for profit with poor quality materials used. Never had a water pump fail before and at 3 years it happened. Also, the DCT was so irritating and aircon didn’t work for Australian conditions.
Partner is better value, the kangoo’s are ancient now
Cheaper to buy a vito van
Very expensive
4 Volkswagen caddy car making machine I need every monthly send me farm veng district let go of
After dieselgate scandal would never buy that brand!
