Psycho MANTIIIIIIS!!!!!!!!!! seriously, it's probably Psycho Mantis and his fucking with your system again. damnit man, weren't you content with reading the shit off my memory card? c'mon!
It's the Apocalypse Elves! I know they exist! Their sole job in life is to magically procure resources and restock rooms with items all the while instantly destroying corpses. Kinda like the Onion Ninjas that live in my walls and are awakened only by Up's opening sequence.
Instead of training to be a more effective zombie slayer I instead exercise rigorously making sure to include plenty of cardio and working out my jaws. I'll have my teeth replaced with steel implants. I'll even throw on some body armor and a helmet. This way when I'm turned I'll be a much more efficient and deadly zombie.
@@slime_sam4321 Only if you're trying to avoid being bitten. If you have great cardio AND intentionally become infected, then you would presumably have a more durable frame for all that sweet, sweet zomjuice to drive.
As an epidemiologist, I'm glad that you make this video. Our job is really boring for majority of people, like dealing with food poisoning outbreak in the school because the cooking lady forgot to wash her hands, etc. It's nice to let people understand what we do for living. You model is simple yet interesting. (we could add zoonotic infection into this model, for example. But that's too much for this video) This entire model based on the assumption that there was no intervention by the government or public health sector. If this outbreak were going to happen in real life, I hope we would react fast enough to contain the virus. Though most of the work would not be as exciting as nuke but mostly isolation for those who contacted the disease, screening and quarantine for the infected... which are already hard enough in real life. (look at all the drama in the recent Ebola outbreak) We'll need the military to enforce all above policies and martial law declaration might not be too far away in the scenario. Andddd nuking entire population of some infested town might be a viable option at some point, just pray the the blast won't push viral particles further to the uninfected area. Funfact: The CDC also drafts a plan in case of the zombie apocalypse. It's quite fun to read. You can google it.
true but the problem is people tend to react very poorly to martial law plus there's also the fact people might not be willing to hand over family members and will try to break quarantine and the government by not telling anyone what's going on because they want to avoid a panic just end up causing a panic
Took me a while to realize this, but after my normal calculus prof got ill, she was replaced by someone who I only recently learned holds a Guinness world record for developing a mathematical model of an outbreak of a zombie infection ( called "When zombies attack!: Mathematical modelling of an outbreak of zombie infection", prof's last name was Munz) . If you used it in your research holy **** that's awesome, if not it really is worth a read. It is basically your model with some extra details.
this is late but if you do see zombies, don't aim for the head, aim for the torso, head-shots are rare and time consuming. rotting zombies have weak bones and rotting flesh. so just heads up.
The plot of world war Z is reliant on very inconsistent depictions on how the zombies work to push the 'shoot them in the head' stick. The story should have ended at the battle of Yonkers, but instead, the zombie are magic apparently and getting steel rain shrapnel through the skull is not the same as a bullet through the skull, because reasons- and zombies are somehow magically immune to overpressure and even though a car exploding is shown to kill them they are able to get up afterbeing hit by munitions that can level an entire building, again because reasons. They are even shown to take a 120mm sabot shell to the chest and get back up-. I call serious bullshit on that.
+darkblood626 The explanation used in the books was that they weren't susceptible to hydrostatic equilibrium (the murder-force caused by bullets and bombs) due to their organs coagulating and becoming plaque-like, supposedly rendering their brains immune from center-mass attacks. The companion book also said how only a small portion of the brain was actually needed for the undead to reanimate and eat the living. Either way it's all bullshit since no organs->no nutrients->no cellular respiration->no fuel for nervous system or muscles->no brain->no zombies
RapidPiqq You don’t even need to go that far. Any monster that can be fended off by a band of untrained, plucky survivors would be mowed down by the military. Period. That is why most media has to hand wave the military or else it would make the protagonist’s struggles and efforts worthless. Unless that’s the whole point and you want to rip your audiences heart out- see ‘The Mist’.
I wouldnt say the military is going to period! I mean they have a higher advantage for sure, but look at real world conflicts. Armies are consistently whipped out by "Plucky survivors" or natives of the land their trying to take. If a zombie outbreak were to be big enough to leave with only a handful of people able to fend them off, shit would be fucked for the military too. And by the time they got there they'd be outnumbered. Now if the survivors were able to kill more zombies than the zombies were killing, than ya, the military could probably put them down. But the military isnt trained to deal with alot of situations, especially riot type combat.
colm duggan go to a website called Project Umbrella. they have alot of them translated there. and FYI, capcom and translate worth a shit either so feel free to check out the files from all the games cause PU has most of them translated as well. just note the site is having some technical issues.
I imagine things like natural barriers/zombies "dying" over time naturally by rotting/etc. would significantly change the results. Zombies are gonna have a much harder time if they have to cross a desert or ocean before they reach the next nearest humans.
In a pandemic case of something that kills us, we are fucked, no matter what. Btw some humans would just hide in shelters for some months, so all the infected die and the infection with them.
Weather and climate are big factors, heat and humidity accelerate rot.Conversely heading north would ensure practically worry free survival during the winter, dead flesh can't keep itself from freezing solid
do the calculations for the spread of the zombies imply that the entire world is physically connected with no geographical features, and that humans will die no matter what?
***** its not just the carriers that effect the transmission. Weather, geography, and the assumption that people will be alone, rather than in groups that can fight them off.
The Zombie Apocalypse is very real. I couldn’t believe it at all before but it’s coming and I really believe we’re going to see the beginning of it by the end of 2023 believe it or not.
Thanks for the video Austin. I know I haven't even watched the video yet but I know this will help me get through my break up which literally happened five minutes ago
Hey its not hard... if you are a nice dude she is the one on the losing end because nice people are more rare and rare... And another thing, you can think about it and see what went wrong and make another lucky girl happy, or do like i do, follow your objectives in life first then go into a relationship when you are ready if you dont think you are ready... just fuck and learn...
I have a roughly one and a half meter long, thick stick, that should be fairly good for a hard whack, probably wanna wear gloves though not to get blisters. Edit: Well, more staff than stick.
Do you want a silent weapon though? Within the first few days shit is gonna get bad, real bad you want to make as much a commotion as possible. This draws people attention and hopefully help. Sure zombies may hear it come over but most likely you have enough sense, distance and more importantly ammunition to deal with any incoming zombies, and if not then evading is always more beneficial to standing your ground against a large threat. Well after a zombie epidemic occurs, the most threatening is other people and lesser extent zombies. But at this point your more actively in the survival role, where hunting gathering and stealth is key.
This kind of numbers thinking is what lost the Vietnam war. The cituation is alot more curious. Consider the cases: A) Zombie group to conquer a unprepared city. A unprepared city would be vulnerable attack. This is CQC combat where zombie excell due to bad enemy tactics, surprising the enemies with raising dead, close proximity to huge populations of unninfected. Since unprepared police in riot gear and medical personell would try to help these former humans at first they would quickly feed the horde. At least for a while before the dead start to rise and the remainder of the resistance wisens up. Even then there may simply be not enough supplies for the city to survive a internal zombie siege. This is where the zombies domination ends. Every single advantage is reversed. B) Zombie travelers. Upon hearing of the outbreak quaranteens are set up all over the world with militarised checkpoints and restricted movement. With mass reeducation and arming of the civilian population well as limiting mass interraction between people, infection rates from zombiefying travelers plummet. This leaves several cuttoff cities with extreme levels of zombification leaving the rest of the world relatively unharmed. c) Zombies traversing the countryside Now zombies have to traverse huge distances in specific directions which further reduces infections as zombies would be fairly directionaly challenged shrinking the infection rate further. Many will be delayed further by getting stuck on terrain and other useless activities. Many will starve/go into playing dead mode as humans will just hunker down making them infenitely more difficult to kill. Zombies may still move in hordes and stumble onto cities by accident.Ensuring actual combat between the armies and the dead. d) Millitary vs Zombies Unlike human adversaries zombies move slowly, in groups, they have poor vision and no tactics or strategy. They cannot hide but they can play dead. They would be cannon foddler to most military vehicles not to mention firepower, airpower, artilerry. Hordes of zombies would actualy be simple to get rid off. Their numbers would be cut down fast with zero infection rate. Only singular zombies would be able to arive at cities. e) Infecting a well prepared city At this point cities would be adjusted to the outbreak with martial law, rationing of supplies, armed populations, curfues, night patrols, search lights and various other means to catch zombie stragglers. Zombie Infection will be manageable because of their weakness of spread in low population arias, in these buffer zones they will be forced to combat against industrial nations in open terrain warfare which will shrink their numbers: Upon expanding from their initial (urban) location their numbers would be decimated to such a degree as to make them non threatening.
Most population centers are not set up to hunker down. Limiting travel and putting major areas on lockdown will have secondary effects on health and moral... which zombies would not have to deal with. Beyond that military check points and martial law don't do much against a lone zombie slipping on a rock and spreading his contaminated brain jelly into a creek upstream somewhere. Also humans, living ones, are shit. There would be those who prey on each other for survival with limited supplies, those who would probably protest for a kinder, gentler response to try and find a cure for these poor people instead of putting them down like an empty shot glass. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if people not only hid their tooth rended souvenirs from zombie encounters from their own shame or fear... but some would likely actively employ tactics to spread zombification to safe zones. Granted most of these apocalypse propigators will probably end up as snack food for the undead but not all crazy people are stupid and careless. I think that humanity would generally survive with larger numbers, or for longer, than generally proposed. However modern military/militarization doesn't completely resolve the problem.
mikezharov I can’t read your meanings because your writing and spelling are so poor. You gotta write while sentences and not just strings of fun words. Subject, verb, predicate... please.
@mike- arming citizens is exactly what some people in government DON'T want to happen. Not to mention that some of these armed citizens would kill other citizens. Plus, it took FEMA 5 days to get water to the superdome. and thats just people without a home to go to anymore. Not to mention that with an outbreak supplies go first to the military and government.

That's why even though it is a stupid fantasy, the US military still have a plan and training regimen prepared just in case a similar situation happens in the future. God Bless Paranoia.
Hey Austin, there was an incident where a man had been messing with bath salts. The man became zombie like, and attacked an old man under the highway, you could see a little on camera. The cops showed up, and shot it, the old man is alive, but his face was eaten, as well as his eyes.
It was just a drugged out psycho, the idiot was on flakka which causes, if taken too often or too much, extreme paranoia, hallucinations, and extreme aggression. Just because you act like a zombie doesn't mean you are one. It's essentially super cheap cocaine, but with way way worse side effects.
Klavinmour um, in certain cases, that counts as a zombie, zombies are human beings working on a lower brain function. They don't feel pain, and without regard for their body, they attack another human, feasting on their flesh. This can be a representation for any cause (ex. Virus) spreading itself as a form of survival. Rabies can also count in this subject. There's also something that affects crocodiles in Florida that affects their brain, causing the crocodile to not feel pain, or any reaction what so ever, there was a documentary about it. Then we have zombie chickens, which the government has included in paperwork. We have that plant fungus that infects ants as well. Voodoo practices, that's been considered as a form of hypnosis, as well. Don't forget that we have the tools to make something similar to the movies as well, and pretty much what I'm saying. Is that the word zombie, has a broader definition than you think.
Have you considered looking at similar outbreaks and including things like survival scenarios? The first thing that comes to mind is the World War Z (novel) in which every nation implements its own variations on a model to save as much of the population as is feasible. I suggest taking a crack at that, although perhaps a bit out of the purview of this channel.
Shawn of the dead remains the most realistic depiction of a zombie outbreak. Any monster that can be fended off by a band of plucky survivors would be mowed down by any military. Period.
While military and police could probably contain smaller outbreaks they might get spread too thin or forced to prioritize some areas while others get overrun at epidemic levels.
The Last of Us has the most believable outbreak I've seen. The "zombies" are still technically alive, they run and are very hard to kill, and the spores do most of the infecting, as well as it's a real fungus. It would be hard to fight them, especially in a hand to hand fight, unlike TWD or any other stumbling zombie, where you literally have to lie down to get eaten. And if you don't have a gas mask you could just get spored. The spores could also infect masses of people at once, meaning that the outbreak could not be stopped at Patient Zero.
28 days later was also pretty believable with their "zombie plague" being what amounted to mutant super rabies on angel dust. More importantly there were a number of people who managed to survive by fleeing into the country, and the virus never achieved the impossible task of crossing the ocean. Once England fell to the rage virus it was put under quarantine, and cut off from the rest of the world. The original night of the living dead was also believable in a way. It was implied that the recently dead were reanimated by some kind of atmospheric radiation from an experimental satellite. Which is pretty much space magic, but gets around the tricky issue of having a disease with 100% fatality rate, and no incubation period spread across natural barriers like mountain ranges, under populated country side, and large bodies of water. Also while you get the impression that humanity struggles at first both with the main cast who are huddled in the basement of a country house, and constant radio reports form the outside. It doesn't take that long to set up an organized resistance, and in the end you have what looks like a civilian militia marching through the country side popping zombies as they see them. Unfortunately they got a little trigger happy and shot the last main character on site, but at least black lived till the end of the movie.
Valiant Videos Why are you being so angry? He simply stated another way the zombie apocalypse could happen. In no way did he state that he was right or that anyone was wrong.
Quintonias The original post was worded as if Last of Us was the only believable zombie outbreak. Intended or not, it came off as more of a statement of fact than an opinion piece.
Caaros, The King of Chaos There's nothing to figure out, it's just not very popular in our current times. More people are interested in saving the planet rather than going elsewhere. If every country pulled their resources we'd be on our way to alpha centauri already
gruntdetonators I'm genuinely surprised when people even contemplate a possibility of a dyson sphere not being a dyson swarm. A dyson sphere is a dyson swarm, that's what Dyson meant.
One big problem would be the sheer panic, along with looting and mass riots. Because these people would be causing chaos within the civilian populations, like the selfish pricks they are, law enforcement and military forces wouldn't even be able to focus all of their efforts and resources into combating the viral crisis. A large deal of responsibility would fall on us, or the truly sensible people, wether you or I actually fall into that category. Sanetization, and concentrated efforts to lessen the infected populations. Personal survival is of course important, but the actions of a few may change the lives of many.
Actually I beg to differ. If There's a viral contagion, that would be the first thing they would do is quarantine the infected area and start screenings immediately, then they would start evacuating people out of the city and begin Kill Operations. People seem to forget as well that QRF that are capable of being inserted within fifteen minutes to an active combat zone also exist. The national guard only take an hour to deploy. As for disregarding Martial Law? there would be plenty of videos and statements from the government about the potential danger from such an epidemic. I dont think the active priority for law enforcement or the military would be containing civil unrest, but actually trying to keep infected groups away from uninfected parts of the city. Granted Humans are irrational, but here in the United States there's a heavy proliferation of firearms, who's to say that a potential Militia could keep order, just about anyone could. I think while such scenarios are fun to play with, they're approached wrong because the government, military, law enforcement refused to actively adapt to the situation, when we know in real life they would actively do.
@@brucetothewayne1803 what world do you live in? there's an NG armory just down the road and it would take hours just for the civillian soldiers to show up there. Same with every armory I've ever lived near. also, a large group of these quaranteened people would try to escape. no one likes to be locked away by the government- especially the tinfoil hat wearers. they'd think it was a hoax and try to leave. then when they are shot it would show the rest of the people that the government is out to get them. also, we already see whats going on with the 2A here now. a good portion of the population doesn't think the rest of the people should have weapons. not to mention that soldiers dont like other people with guns until they've shown they know how to use them and wont shoot them in the back.
As someone living in the corona virus panic in march 2020. I can confirm. If looting and stockpiling is happening in shuch a minor viral situation. Imagine what would happen with an actual threat
Exactly. Look at Covid 19. The world has enough technology to keep us content indoors, and motherfuckers couldn't even wash their hands or wear thin little masks. Humanity will not survive a zombie outbreak.
Dear Austin, Zombies would be fast, homicidal and could be shot anywhere. Almost exactly like the 28 days later zombies except it would take longer too turn than 10-20 secs.
best places to shoot a zombie would still be the legs, heart and head. legs to knock it down, heart to stop blood flow to the legs (riddle me how that still work when you're dead batman) and the headshot to slice through the brain. of course that depends on the round as well. some rounds like a .45 just glance right off the skull if you don't shoot it in exactly the right spot. as Lincoln Clay once said, "worst place to shoot a fella's in the forehead."
The SCIENCE behind the Halo Gravity Hammer? Or Fuel Rod Cannon? Or Portal 2s various Gels? Heck even the portal gun itself if you're wanting to get sexy with it?!
the fuel rod cannon may be a little too simple (its a gun that fires an exploding gel that bounces if it has not 'ignited' prior to impact) and so it may not be the 'sexy' science that is sought, however the gravity hammer may be an interesting one, as well as the technology predating the gravity hammer; the technology first used by the covenant in terms of 'gravity' was their hovering chairs and other vehicles, after the development of that one fucked in the head san shyuum created a torture device using the same mechanism (increasing gravity slowly starting at the feet and slowly making its way up to the stomach), this technology was then used to create the gravity hammers most notable the fist of rukt. i would love for not only that gravity hammer to be looked at but covenant 'gravity technology' in general as people seem to mostly look at the sangheili energy sword and ignore other tech (which all has its own charm)
Can you take a look at the Blacklight virus from the [PROTOTYPE] series? Please? If it helps, the 'zombies' in Prototype are just giant walking, living clumps of biomass. They aren't actually still the same being that was infected, they're just... a mass of virus cells which can act the same as a living being. So yeah. =)
John Paul Rutigliano He's talking about cells that have been infected by the virus and altered. That's where the 'biomass' part comes into it. Think of 180 pounds of meat that is infected with a virus that lets them function like a mix beteen the T-1000 and the thing.
John Peacekeeper Which...actually could sort of happen, if certain fungi, that infects bugs, grew to affect Humans. Vsauce....3 or 2, made an incredible video regarding this topic.
@@JohnPeacekeeper In our world we got people who cosplay as zombies and do zombie pranks. So how will you know their is a actual zombie outbreak. And not a guy just fucking with the rest of us.
I remember watching this video when it first came out and I loved it. Still love it today with watching it a few time. It’s just a shame that there isn’t more videos like this.
one of my favorite infection outbreaks in games is The Last of Us' infected outbreak. it's based on a real life fungus that causes ants to become zombies in a sense, and the game is based on as if the cordyceps fungus genetically evolved, managing to infect and cause more than just ants to turn into zombies.
The thing is that zombies would still work like a human being, needing food, water and sleep i guess. So hiding for about a year in a safe place would be nice. Because they would have died by that time of no food nor water. So yeah, a zombie outbreak wouldn't be that devastating unless they work like in the walking dead.
But the zombies in TWD can only be killed by a damage to the brain or destroying it, even decapitation would still make its head move, that will make things tricky
Karolinsk soldat in the scenario of Max Brooks' apocalypse his virus gets into the body and immediately travels to the brain and kills the subject, however it keeps the stem alive to command the body and sustain motor skills. he explains the science of it not rotting with the fact that decomposition is caused by microorganisms breaking down tissue, and the virus combats the microorganisms that enter the body, extending the lifespan of the subject to five years before the host becomes too damaged to be viable. so the human race would have to hide for a minimum of five years after the latest human was infected in order to wait it out.
I consider RE 3 Nemesis to be the series finest moment. It had the biggest playable area, improved gameplay, and added in the brick shits inducing horror powerhouse that is Nemesis.
Woa, woa,woa... If they are REALLY zombies (being re-animated dead), what about human decomposition? How can dead cells actually continue to respire? I want an explaination for an ACTUAL zombie outbreak, not something which is very similar. But in the end of the day, is this just a parasite using a host?
reza choudhury it takes quite a while for cells to degrade to the point they can't be restarted. Of course, we're only talking hours, not days and weeks like in the games and shows, but still. I'd say the parasite version would be the most probable. Parasite kills the higher brain functions, amps up aggression and hunger, and secretes spores into saliva and other body fluids. It would take a while to detect, in early stages with early cases might be mistaken for rabies or something, resulting in mistreatment and release of infected, who go home and turn their family. I read once that there are preferential infections, parasites make you want to spread them to only healthy people. I don't remember where, and I could be wrong, but that would help preserve the zombie population, prevent cannibalism.
Well yeah, but an living thing, reanimated or otherwise, needs food. So take for example the fungus that controls the host (currently ants) and moves them into the sun for the fungus to grow. If the virus, parasite, fungus, whatever's purpose is to eat and pass on it's genes, then it would do so by attacking humans. If humanity managed to set up an effective perimeter, nuke the area, and wait, all while bombing the areas and watching via satellite and aerial watch, then the zombies would effectively starve. The military would move in for study, and the area would be cleaned out, and probably not repopulated until months after, to ensure the thing has been killed off, and to ensure that the area is safe. However, it is likely to be longer due to nuclear fallout.
Austin said that for the purpose of this video he would assume zombies are somehow able to work. There are many reasons why zombies such as the ones in Resident Evil would not work. Really, viruses like AIDS, the plague, and ESPECIALLY malaria are much more effective, since their symptoms don't show up for a while (AIDs may not show up for years), and/or have a carrier that is numerous and can easily spread it like rats or mosquitos. IF there was a virus that caused necrosis like a zombie, the zombie wouldn't be a problem. It would be dead within hours probably. It would be the actually virus itself being transmitted by other creatures, or worse, airborne.
well, If you have not yet played "The Last Of Us" you should, what you are suggesting is Quite similar to the story, and well, the remastered game looks great.
A UA-camr by the name of shadiversity did an episode on how a zombie outbreak would be handled far Easier by the Medieval ages compared to the Modern Age.
But killing zombies you can inhale the blood mists, washing more isn't the only issues, and its easy to get random scrapes in an emergency from tunnel vision and panic and hurry. So it wouldn't be kill them quickly so much as evacuate everyone quickly, isolate the region quickly, then incinerate it quickly. I doubt they can break metal bars. Just need an emergency zombie team to have insta-walls built, like Metal Meis from overwatch trapping them in before you blast them.
But that would still be more than 700 million people or 2 - 3 large countries. If they'd get rid of the zombies for 700 M to survive (without nuclear winter preferably) humanity could perfectly well bounce back. Early humans have survived worse extinction events.
Hah! We survived having only 10,000 individuals. Even with just 10% of 7 billion, you'd have 700 million. Which was the world population a few centuries ago. And if you can keep modern tech, you're basically in the clear.
You guye are the reason im REALLY intp science and physics now. I just wanted to say thank you i always struggled with math and science and now i find them SUPER interesting so again thank you
You do realize for that fungus to take over humans it would take a considerable amount of evolution in years to do so I'm pretty sure by the time it even gets to that point we would have already killed the Earth ourselves and be living on Mars so fungus dead Earth dead we good on Mars
"Hour by hour, more zombies infect more people..." It's mid April during corona virus. Replace hour with day, zombies with infected people, and this vid hits you so hard. 20,000 dead in US alone...
Austin, I hate to be that guy but you made a mistake. Your pool for the S bucket it far too small. The T-virus was supposed to be able to be able to infect and convert any life form. Dogs are just one example, even if you reduce it down to just any mammal larger then 5 KG your pool of victims become huge. Just imagine if a single house cat, gets out of the blast zone, it would go to the nearest living target to infect. As to containing the T-virus to the American tectonic plates, the moment it got to a water source it would be too late. If fish can be infected, which the series says can happen, given time they WILL reach the ocean, at which point even if the human population isolates themselves it would be too late for all life on Earth. This would be a mass extinction event for the whole of the planet. Plants would be fine (i am just going to give it that since there is no brain) but all animal life would be threatened FAST. Let's say the infect happens in the middle of Yellowstone national park, after a few days it would be too late to stop it. The rivers would have been infected, the animals would be spreading out for new prey, and even before a single human is bitten thing about how many infection vectors you would have. Your idea of worse case being 2% survival is amazingly optimistic. Now that is just if it is viral, imagine if it was fungal. The spores could be carried on the wind or just stay dormant for any amount of time until a vector (animal) is near. Add to water borne the idea of air borne spores and we have SERIOUS issues. 2% survival is best case IMHO, I would love to see you try to do the math for all mammals in the S bucket, that and imagining the hell of that kind of war is enough to scare most sane people into making their own bunker.
***** understandable, but the idea of as large a survival rate as 19% in ideal conditions is a bit... over optimistic. With some creativity and a fully funded genetics lab Zombies or a kind are possible. I would personally go with a kind of slime mold that feeds on the Nervous system up to the brain stem. The cerebral-spinal fluid would act as a kind of retardant for growth. Mix in a bit of electrical potential and some more complex behaviors of other fungus (seeking out warm objects as an example) and use the existing brain and spinal systems for direction and abilities and you got it. Such a basic 'zombie would not move fast, or much at all until something is close. It would act as an ambush weapon, but the dangerous part is the spores. Make is to that once the body begins to decay the 'fruiting body' begins to form in the lungs, once most of the Fungus is there it can cause the fruiting body to jut out the mouth and kind of explode from methane pressure. The spread would be entertaining and breathing in the spores would be one method of spread. Add onto that direct infection via transfer and you get the idea. Scary stuff.
Daniel Domeisen you sir, are a thinker. and I like that. you make a very powerful point that, if you don't mind, I am going to use for everyone I know that has their "perfect" zombie plan. I'm curious to see what they think of to counter the possibility of a zombie apocalypse that infects more than just humans.
***** - the food supply would be a good vector for initial spread, like before anyone knows it is a fungal zombie thing. It takes days to die of the infection itself so there is a window in which an animal, say a cow, can be infected and butchered before outward signs pop up. Now think about how many people just that one cow can infect, not just human either since slaughter by-product is used in animal feed. If it is a fungus that is stimulated for electrical activity in nerves then the infection would just spore themselves in the feed and meat after slaughter. Imagine the number of infected from just that one cow and how spread it would be. Now after that initial burst the food supply is already pointless because chaos will be the main stay of the day well within a week. after the burst. However that is not the end of it.where there is rotten meat or rotting meat there are animals eating it. at which point you start infecting the biosphere as a whole. A sickly animal will be killed by predators, and a body will be eaten by more scavengers. The food supply would only be a factor in the initial infections for humans and the biosphere as a whole. However i would say insects, would not be effected by my fungal thing, their lungs are total different and not connected to their mouths. So something like an ant bite would be harmless.
Also, did you take into account the rate at which the zombies rot into immobile piles of flesh, and the rate at which the zombies starve to death, if that is possible?
My sister just went off to college and left her entire knife collection with me, I now have a total of 25 very impressive knives (and a katana) in my posession, not to mention a survival bag or whatever they're called, plus a dad and uncle crazy into survival stuff (ammo, guns, canned food, chickens, living by the ocean, etc) I think if everything really hits the fan, Imma be good
Hey I'm doing a zombie apocalypse - related project due November 9 and I was wondering if you could give out the SINZD model for public use. I'm honestly interested in it. My project guidelines are telling me to figure out how many zombies there would be if the number doubled each day, but that's very unrealistic. I want to use the SINZD model to prove to my teachers that they're wrong.
Use the SINZD model and tell them all the factors of a zombie apocalypse, like humans killing zombies, humans dying but not turning, humans turning, etc. If they don't see that they are wrong, then they are stupid.
That movie was bullshit and had literally nothing to do with the source material at all. None. Read the book. Israel was NOT to be fucked with in the book.
Hi Austin. I really liked this video. Not only because the video was, as always, well made and that your method of thinking was sound and perfectly explained, but also because it touches a subject I love: zombies. I would have one thing to say about your explanation though. You said the world would quickly become infected after the United states fell to a zombie apocalypse: in a realistic scenario, I would find that unlikely. If the government found one of its town had fallen to the zombies, they would immediately close all airports and boats entering and leaving the country, and close its borders to prevent any infected person from leaving the state. And even if the news reached the white house a little late, I think the local authorities would also stop infected people from leaving too. The only way the world could become infected would be in the very very very small chance that someone fled the infected grounds without getting stopped by the local authorities, was infected himself/herself, did not succumb to the zombies and illness before reaching a way of transportation leading towards another continent, passed the customs safely without showing signs of sickness and got off the airport before transforming into a zombie. Even then, one zombie could be easily be stopped if spotted in a street. Most likely, the infection would be stopped before reaching continent-wise contamination. And even in the case it did, world-wide contamination stays extremely unlikely.
Herp Derp no they wouldn't, they would die of other things, but not of hunger, see, zombies have no limit of human flesh, they simply just keep eating and eating
That's one of the main issues I take with a lot of pop culture forms of zombies. It's impossible for them to simply stop requiring chemical energy to operate. One time myself and a group of my friends had a huge discussion about how we thought zombies would operate in the real world, under the constraints of biology and such. Essentially, the way I see zombies existing is them still needing what a human needs, except they're violent, feral, don't give a shit about pain, that sort of thing. In the real world a zombie is still a living thing, it's simply a human body that has been hijacked by some kind of pathogen or other organism to function as a vector. So yes, I think hiding out until they all eat each other would be the best plan.
I love how he said let's forget all the science about the rotting corpses for a minute and go to the science about the rotting corpses for a minute is basically what he said first of all zombies wouldn't happen if it was like a dead thing as soon as your dad your body can't get back up basically what happens is when you die the brain sends a message saying it's over don't move ever again the body doesn't move ever again after because that was the final message and that is the final message even if a virus could take over the body all that would do would sit there it couldn't do anything the ligaments would already start decaying which means even if it could somehow move the body which would defy it's very last order which is basically impossible it means that it would only be a threat for a day at most also not discounting the popular culture of killing zombies and making sure they never get back up our world would be done with a zombie apocalypse probably as soon as a small horde shows up cuz we wouldn't be stupid we would just kill them so the zombies would get even less than their ligaments give them also the body would start falling apart so there's that to account for as well so really if you Maddie smart with a zombie apocalypse if you can even call it that at the stages were talking it would only last for possibly an hour if we were stupid with the zombie apocalypse it would last for one day if we were extremely stupid with the zombie apocalypse it would last for a week if we were the dumbest freaking people in the universe it would last for 2 months that is again counting how Resident Evil zombies work I'm not counting the clickers cuz that's a different story by the time the fungus could even affect humans we probably be saying f*** this planet anyway let's go to Mars in fact I'm pretty sure we be on Mars and Earth would probably be completely destroyed by then so then the clickers would never happen because we f*** the world before the zombies could we didn't even give him a chance
And I just realized what the comment said below me with our knowledge of zombies we would not care about rights activist and Factory probably throw them into a zombie pin to be honest if they want to be that stupid then they can die with their idiotic mindless human flesh eating friends
AUSTIN! YOU FORGOT ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL STATUS IN YOU'RE CALCULATIONS!!! WHAT ABOUT AREAS THAT ARE HOT OR COLD!?!?! OR AREAS WITH A LOT OF WATER SURROUNDING THEM!!! AUSTIN YOU FOOL!!!
Realistically wouldn't zombies think that other zombies are humans because when you think about us at their Base all that zombies are dead humans so why don't they just eat each other
If Austin hypothetically did the question of, could you become as strong as one punch man through continuous training? Bulking muscle is strength muscle (how much you can lift) and lean muscle is endurance muscle (how many times you can lift X weight). So could you train enough to build enough muscle to do what Saitama can? No, there is a physical limit as to how much muscle your body will add and that no matter how much training you do, you won't exceed this amount. Some people are gifted with being able to put in more muscle than others (eg every professional body build) but right now you are either born with this or not (It's a gene or special protein marker or something). That's pretty much all the science to it.
your sorta right ish let me help your born with a certain amount or muscle the amount never changes ever when you work out it tears the muscles and when they come back the cells clone themselves and double making the muscles bigger the protein thing you were talking about is when people are born with a metric fuck ton of muscle and have increased muscle growth
It's more science than optimism. You need tendons, nerves, muscles regardless of stage of necrosis. No tendons no locomotion a shot to the knee caps or shatter bone the target is effectively neutralized.
Jarred Emanuel thank you I have a VERY long comment explaining many reasons zombies would either be impossible or just pathetic. I didn’t even include half of all the reasons.
You know what Thomas I looked it up and your more stupid than I thought. They are t bringing the dead back to life they’re the brain dead back into life. Those who’s brains stop functioning, vegetables. This still doesn’t turn them into zombies though they are legally considered dead the people they are trying to restore brain function in aren’t dead. And it’s a small pilot group so it’s moving very slowly. The worst that’ll happen is that they end up with accidental deaths and a waste of money in a mass scale.
there is one factor *that is mildy hard to predict* the amount of infected that would end their own lives which would largely end up reducing the amount of zombies
It brings me great joy to see an epidemiological model in a UA-cam video about a zombie apocalypse. Well done!! I must ask, though, have you considered a network-based model? Your model (as well as most variations of the SIR model) assumes a "well mixed" population. I.e. any infected person could infect any uninfected person, ignoring heterogeneous population densities and interactions. For a worldwide pandemic, it'd probably be useful to use a network model instead, as you're able to intrinsically take into account how pathogens spread within and between populations. I'd highly recommend playing Plague Inc to get an idea of the sorts of variables at play. If you use R, it has some amazing packages for building network models and simulations.
the United States would deffinatly survive better then most of the world. 1 we have waaaay more guns and ammo per person vs most other countries in the world. 2 we have way more food and fresh water then most other countries. 3 we have the U.S. armed forces i.e. army navy air force seals marines national guard paramilitary ect. 4 local militias and preppers. 5 we could "isolate" or continent. Europe, Africa, middle East, and Asia are land connected. we nuke the Panamacanal and we become isolated North America. 6 North America could sustain our self food, water and energy wise.
Yeah and you have big obesity problem, many places like Las Vegas have no water without electricity, you have big cities with high density which is not good, and also dumb people. I mean everyone has dumb people but in the meaning of diy your average teen is worse then an average european teen I'd assume.
You do know that America isn't the best country in the world Europe Asia and Africa has strong millitary's aswell and Asia,Africa and Europe has plenty of food and water plus Asian's, African's and European's are way smarter than American's😒
Rickard Rakkoon trust me....shit will go down faster than we could secure "barricade" our selves from the world.!!!! Don't forget planes and boats also bring people in....have you by any chance played" Plague inc"?....it gives you a little scenario of just how fast things will go from ok to the last survivor.!!!!!
Zodiac K9 but all of it spread all over the world....don't kid yourself boy..... Russia and China.....or China alone can fuck us up quickly and efficiently... their armies are whole and in one place....our armies are all over the glove in small numbers.... don't you go fighting the world like that...you'll loose.!!!!!
I've been meaning to write a zombie book for years, you've given me some really good ideas, im hyped up about it... it will probably take me 40 more years to finish it tho as I'm no writer hahahah
Random Guy not even close. and sadly, zombies are only a matter of time. look up Bioquark, and their current tests. this shit is happening, and it's bc humans a freaking retarded. Humans are creating the zombie plague, just like in resident evil. once it starts... if so much as a single zombie escapes the facility, humanity is doomed. in the event of an outbreak IRL, we have only hours to respond, or else it will be to late. not only from the zombies, but the mass hysteria caused by it. you see, all the formulas in the world can't compensate for deaths caused by suicide and murder due to mass hysteria, which would swell the zombie numbers much faster, which means that unlike in RE, we wouldn't have days to react. we'd only have hours.
UA-cam Blue seriously, look up bioquark. this medical research company based in Pennsylvania is currently undergoing their 3rd (or is it fourth?) series of trials for a serum that would bring back the dead. and where are they doing this? why, an undisclosed location in Latin America of course. just like the outbreak in resident evil 4. this shit is real, and it's scary as fuck. the USA are the ones who are bringing about the zombie plague, and nobody seems to be smart enough to see it. as I said in my previous comment, this is real. and its happening in real life. if so much as a single "test subject" escapes whatever facility Bioquark is using, we're doomed. think about it. by the time word gets out, it will be to late. nobody would admit to releasing a real zombie, so they'd try to hide it. if so much as a single person gets attacked by just the one zombie.. it would spiral out of control so quickly. nobody would believe it at first, thinking it's just someone who went crazy, because who would honestly believe that the dead are walking? by the time we wizened up to what was really going on, and with Bioquark most likely trying to hide it, things would have gone to far. once the public learned about it, the mass hysteria would cause a rash of suicide and murder, the breakdown of society, very quickly swelling the numbers of dead, and swelling the zombies numbers. we'd have mere hours to react, before the horde grows large enough to easily take out a city. by that time, the plague would have likely spread. within the first day, the numbers of the walking dead would easily reach into the hundred thousands, and grow exponentially from there. within a week, humanity would be down to maybe a few million left. our only hope would be in the zombies starving themselves out, or decaying fully. and the worst part is, if so much as a single drop of zombie blood or saliva gets into any opening in your body, you'd become infected. we'd need hazmat suits, with some sort of armor over top to fend off the bites and scratches, else we'd risk turning as well. realistically... humanity doesn't stand a chance.
UA-cam Blue pretty much... god, I hope so badly that Bioquark realizes the danger of their tests and stops, but that honestly won't happen. if they're trying this for the 3rd time already, they won't stop. if there is a god, I pray that he never lets their serum work.
The biggest mystery in the early Resident Evil series was...Who's getting rid of the bodies, and reseting the puzzles, when I leave & re-enter a room?
Shawnee Longbow the evil RAM limitations of the PSOne, that's who.
That insidious bastard! 😅
Psycho MANTIIIIIIS!!!!!!!!!!

Hahaha great Idea
But isnt cardio rule one to surviving the zombie apocalypse?

I dont know, videos on youtube and twitter showing zombies might lead people to comply to military orders alot easier for their own good.
If only the CDC had as much attention to detail when isolating and treating Coronavirus patients.

It is basically your model with some extra details.
the lesson is actually relevant now, in 2020
Glad to see someone remembered this video the same as I

I know rightttt
I predicted this pandemic
this is late but if you do see zombies, don't aim for the head, aim for the torso, head-shots are rare and time consuming.
rotting zombies have weak bones and rotting flesh.
so just heads up.
World War Z (the book that is) provides an excellent and interesting example for how the zombie virus could get so out of hand so quickly.
The plot of world war Z is reliant on very inconsistent depictions on
how the zombies work to push the 'shoot them in the head' stick.
Canada doesn't get affected lmao
I wouldnt say the military is going to period! I mean they have a higher advantage for sure, but look at real world conflicts. Armies are consistently whipped out by "Plucky survivors" or natives of the land their trying to take.
If a zombie outbreak were to be big enough to leave with only a handful of people able to fend them off, shit would be fucked for the military too. And by the time they got there they'd be outnumbered.
Now if the survivors were able to kill more zombies than the zombies were killing, than ya, the military could probably put them down. But the military isnt trained to deal with alot of situations, especially riot type combat.
I wonder if Capcom actually thought of all this.
Your profile picture matches that statement extremely well.

You know why I like this channel?
Classical music while an insane smart guy rants about crazy things!
I imagine things like natural barriers/zombies "dying" over time naturally by rotting/etc. would significantly change the results. Zombies are gonna have a much harder time if they have to cross a desert or ocean before they reach the next nearest humans.
This simulation calculates at most 2.7 years, and all the other graphs are for 180 days. The situation is horrific even in the short term.
Nah, these bullshit graphs dont take into account terrain or militairies
In a pandemic case of something that kills us, we are fucked, no matter what. Btw some humans would just hide in shelters for some months, so all the infected die and the infection with them.
It really wouldn't matter much. As long as this "zombie virus" was incurable and was airborne civilization as we know it would most certainty end.
***** but the virus takes over within hours
***** yeah, im just tired of austin taking in arbitrary factors and leaving out the realistic ones
***** its not just the carriers that effect the transmission. Weather, geography, and the assumption that people will be alone, rather than in groups that can fight them off.

I have quite a few options( let's leave it at that).
This kind of numbers thinking is what lost the Vietnam war.
The cituation is alot more curious.
Consider the cases:
A) Zombie group to conquer a unprepared city.
This leaves several cuttoff cities with extreme levels of zombification leaving the rest of the world relatively unharmed.
c) Zombies traversing the countryside
Now zombies have to traverse huge distances in specific directions which further reduces infections as zombies would be fairly directionaly challenged shrinking the infection rate further. Many will be delayed further by getting stuck on terrain and other useless activities. Many will starve/go into playing dead mode as humans will just hunker down making them infenitely more difficult to kill. Zombies may still move in hordes and stumble onto cities by accident.Ensuring actual combat between the armies and the dead.
d) Millitary vs Zombies
Unlike human adversaries zombies move slowly, in groups, they have poor vision and no tactics or strategy. They cannot hide but they can play dead. They would be cannon foddler to most military vehicles not to mention firepower, airpower, artilerry. Hordes of zombies would actualy be simple to get rid off. Their numbers would be cut down fast with zero infection rate. Only singular zombies would be able to arive at cities.
e) Infecting a well prepared city
At this point cities would be adjusted to the outbreak with martial law, rationing of supplies, armed populations, curfues, night patrols, search lights and various other means to catch zombie stragglers.
Thank you
Most population centers are not set up to hunker down.
Potato
mikezharov I can’t read your meanings because your writing and spelling are so poor.

Hey Austin, there was an incident where a man had been messing with bath salts. The man became zombie like, and attacked an old man under the highway, you could see a little on camera. The cops showed up, and shot it, the old man is alive, but his face was eaten, as well as his eyes.

I hope Austin replies to this. :/
Period.

Yeah?
Sun Tzu ikr.

Dear Austin,
Zombies would be fast, homicidal and could be shot anywhere. Almost exactly like the 28 days later zombies except it would take longer too turn than 10-20 secs.
best places to shoot a zombie would still be the legs, heart and head.
legs to knock it down, heart to stop blood flow to the legs (riddle me how that still work when you're dead batman) and the headshot to slice through the brain.
of course that depends on the round as well. some rounds like a .45 just glance right off the skull if you don't shoot it in exactly the right spot.
as Lincoln Clay once said, "worst place to shoot a fella's in the forehead."
kromwell smith NOOOOOOOO

So like a cross between the second division game and the last of us maybe?

The SCIENCE behind the Halo Gravity Hammer? Or Fuel Rod Cannon?
Or Portal 2s various Gels? Heck even the portal gun itself if you're wanting to get sexy with it?!
Ooooh I'd like to see the fuel rod gun done!
Fuel rod gun in the book is terrifying, fuckers explode when overheat ed
the fuel rod cannon may be a little too simple (its a gun that fires an exploding gel that bounces if it has not 'ignited' prior to impact) and so it may not be the 'sexy' science that is sought, however the gravity hammer may be an interesting one, as well as the technology predating the gravity hammer; the technology first used by the covenant in terms of 'gravity' was their hovering chairs and other vehicles, after the development of that one fucked in the head san shyuum created a torture device using the same mechanism (increasing gravity slowly starting at the feet and slowly making its way up to the stomach), this technology was then used to create the gravity hammers most notable the fist of rukt. i would love for not only that gravity hammer to be looked at but covenant 'gravity technology' in general as people seem to mostly look at the sangheili energy sword and ignore other tech (which all has its own charm)

So yeah. =)
The blacklight virus is basically a biological, self-replicating
nanobot.
+darkblood626
I know! Isn't it amazing? =)
Err... "Virus Cells" ???
Not a thing bro. Viruses aren't made up of/don't have cells. They are many, many times smaller and more simplistic.
John Paul Rutigliano He's talking about cells that have been infected by the virus and altered. That's where the 'biomass' part comes into it. Think of 180 pounds of meat that is infected with a virus that lets them function like a mix beteen the T-1000 and the thing.
depends on the infected type, zombies are just a byproduct, failed attempts at making something bigger and badder.
Austin, after years of watching you, this is by far still my favorite video you’ve made. Good job.
Austin's become the star of ShoddyCast imo.
Left 4 Dead's also got an incredibly interesting and tragic lore behind how its zombies work too

watching this in corona times
but wait, if the immune die, there immune system will...die, so can't they then be infected at that point?
Jambott it's not just the immune system but differences or specifics in DNA that could make a virus just plain incompatible with your whole system
Your immune system isn't this one thing that stops you from getting sick, it's a complicated web of functions and tasks carried out by your cells.
ikr, the immune can be zambies
yes I know I spelled it wrong
well, in the video he just said pretend that they just can't be infected
I love the way you modified the transmission/illness mapping in a believable way. Cold hard science and medicine in this one. You have a fan in me.
one of my favorite infection outbreaks in games is The Last of Us' infected outbreak. it's based on a real life fungus that causes ants to become zombies in a sense, and the game is based on as if the cordyceps fungus genetically evolved, managing to infect and cause more than just ants to turn into zombies.
That sounds like it should be made into a TV show!
The thing is that zombies would still work like a human being, needing food, water and sleep i guess. So hiding for about a year in a safe place would be nice. Because they would have died by that time of no food nor water.
So yeah, a zombie outbreak wouldn't be that devastating unless they work like in the walking dead.
Viking413 The walking dead ones are decaying, so it just would be slower.
But the zombies in TWD can only be killed by a damage to the brain or destroying it, even decapitation would still make its head move, that will make things tricky
FebriyanWP but when they all reduce to skeletons they can't do shit
I would just hide in the north pole for a few years. Zombies freeze in the cold.
I love how much detail and research he does in these things
Thanks for all the in-depth replies. :D I got some good ones.
well, If you have not yet played "The Last Of Us" you should, what you are suggesting is Quite similar to the story, and well, the remastered game looks great.
Mims Zanadunstedt no, I mean, like. You should just be washing your hands more anyway.
Better you go down taking 5 of them with you than having those five infecting others who can't kill them.
What if I just wait until winter and they all freeze?
Build a wall you say? There is only one wall in the world that can stop a zombie apocalypse! The Great Wall of Trump!
To be fair, humanity would have a better chance letting only the immune survive.
That's at maximum only 10% of the world left alive and we would likely die out in the long run because of a decision like that.
Problem is - the immune ones aren't immune to being eaten alive by zombies...
You guye are the reason im REALLY intp science and physics now. I just wanted to say thank you i always struggled with math and science and now i find them SUPER interesting so again thank you

First rule of survival: wait for things to calm down outside
Honestly I think The Last of Us got down pretty well, and something similar to what happened in that is probably what would happen in reality.
You do realize for that fungus to take over humans it would take a considerable amount of evolution in years to do so I'm pretty sure by the time it even gets to that point we would have already killed the Earth ourselves and be living on Mars so fungus dead Earth dead we good on Mars
Oh it will happen. Not now, not later, but probably decades or centuries. But it will happen.

For the sake of the video though and less migraines on his end I believe he only went with humans.
If it infects more than just humans, welp. We're fucked as a species. Especially if our meat supplies do get infected like that.
So something like an ant bite would be harmless.
i learn so much watching this

Hey I'm doing a zombie apocalypse - related project due November 9 and I was wondering if you could give out the SINZD model for public use. I'm honestly interested in it. My project guidelines are telling me to figure out how many zombies there would be if the number doubled each day, but that's very unrealistic. I want to use the SINZD model to prove to my teachers that they're wrong.
Use the SINZD model and tell them all the factors of a zombie apocalypse, like humans killing zombies, humans dying but not turning, humans turning, etc. If they don't see that they are wrong, then they are stupid.

*watches all the calculations and math drooling*
YAY! Science fix!
But in the end they would all slowly die of starvation
Herp Derp no they wouldn't, they would die of other things, but not of hunger, see, zombies have no limit of human flesh, they simply just keep eating and eating
Or decompose
Herp Derp Resident Evil zombies don't require nourishment to stay alive
Herp Derp I doubt they will even move at all considering that they need pretty much the entire body to be alive in order to move the muscles and shit
This was super cool. I can't imagine the amount of work involved in getting those numbers.
i love your voice
it makes everything sound interesting
episode idea: the SCIENCE! of Austin's voice!

That's pretty much all the science to it.
your sorta right ish let me help your born with a certain amount or muscle the amount never changes ever when you work out it tears the muscles and when they come back the cells clone themselves and double making the muscles bigger
the protein thing you were talking about is when people are born with a metric fuck ton of muscle and have increased muscle growth

Shadow 77 Strong military lmao dude America could literally destroy half the world if we wanted to with how much firepower we have
Rickard Rakkoon trust me....shit will go down faster than we could secure "barricade" our selves from the world.!!!!
The U.S military would destroy zombies in a few weeks.
