The impression seems realistic to me, and I'm not a John Madden! LOL
I know him mostly because of all those Madden football videogames.
Kinda hard to ignore a game series that has appeared on multiple console platforms AND sold over 100 million copies over the course of over 3 decades now!
Frank told a story about doing the impression in front of Madden and his grandkids. The kids laughed and then Madden was OK with it.
I think the only thing was not the impression but FC's (comedic) quip that he liked John Madden because he made Frank "feel smart".

This guy used to do a quick segment on Chicago sports radio every Monday.
By the 4th or 5th time he was on, I realized it wasn't John Madden.
It took the line, "Brett Favre could throw a pass underwater at least 50 or 60 yards" for me to realize that was not John Madden coming through the AM radio airwaves.

Love this--props to Dave too for his stellar straight-man work. If Jimmy Fallon was doing this, he would be rolling around in his swivel chair in hysterics after every line.
Jimmy oes that with the guests who arent funny as well. Can hardly watch him most times.Dave is a much better host.

It’s up there, and what’s crazy is Dave doesn’t seem to really want to get into it at the beginning but he’s just dying by the end.

This guy Caliendo did the best Madden... what was funny is I think they kicked him out of the funeral or he thought it was a bad idea to go because he was afraid of what may have happened?... The thing that would have been funny is him doing the euology of John Madden while impersonating him and then watching his family, friends, and former players trying to hold back the tears of laughter -- this guy Caliendo was great.... I can see how Madden would hate his impression because Madden was just being himself so when someone makes fun of your personality it really does hurt.
Woah this John Madden Segment Frank Caliendo did sounds like when John Madden would call KCBS Radio San Francisco for an NFL Segment at AM Drive. I remember these type of phone calls John Madden would do for KCBS Radio while he was going to prepare for the next game he had to cover on TV.

This was hilarious....but the problem was the audience did not know who frank was...or even who john madden was....
Many people feel that great impressions of celebrities should stop when the celebrity dies. I've always disagreed with this concept and great impressions actually honor the memory of the deceased. The sad story of Vaughn Meader, who did a hilarious take on President John F. Kennedy, is an example of killing the career of a great impressionist. Vaughn's career was another victim of the "magic bullet" on November 22, 1963. Frank Caliendo happens to do the best John Madden ever and he does an equally great Robin Williams. I still think his takes on those top late celebrities are funny and I hope he continues to do them as part of his act.

It's a shame that Caliendo never really evolved past this I remember his stand up special was basically more of this but it didn't age well. He never could seem to pivot out of a handful of impressions.

He’s great at voices but not always the comedy that comes with it.
Madden was his golden goose he knew the guy so well but with his other voices he never really got the laughs outside of “wow he did the voice great”
