The irony -- or near-irony. You spend a long career in a risky profession working on trees, and the time a tree nearly kills you is when you're just standing there minding your own business. 😬

Glad you're OK Blair. Interesting how we live the arborist life where we climb in a tree with all kinds of saws and ropes in trees that look much worse. Imagine if you were working in that tree ... I will be thinking of this the next tree I'm in. Something that may bring a chuckle is I have a client named Glenn Blair!

I'm so happy you're alright. You're a huge inspiration mate and I've been watching these videos for years. As a kid from Aus growing up around 90+m E.Regnans trees I've always had as much a fascination for trees as i have had a desire to understand them. You have helped me do that and this channel is unashamedly geared towards doing so, without the bravado of some more mainstream youtube channels, without the recklessness and careless lopping. Instead, you show a genuine interest in trees and how we interact with them, and best of all, sharing that knowledge with us all. Thanks mate.

Wow! Thanks for sharing. I hate to say it but this reminds me of the old saying "a cobbler with kids and no shoes"; Arborist hit by falling limb in his own yard. It sounds like another verse in the song Jagged little Pill. It's because of that I felt strange giving a thumbs-up but I figured you take it for what it's worth; an appreciation for sharing your experiences. Be safe.

That gave me goose bumps! Especially since that was a perfectly healthy tree. Almost like you were meant to experience a close call, and then live to tell the story! I got a flat tire down on Swanton Rd a couple years ago and pulled off (apparently across from the folks that own the SC boardwalk). On a whim I decided to back my car up ~30ft so the tow truck would have room to pull in. While waiting I wandered down the road a ways, looking for the rock that had slashed my sidewall. Heard a CRACK ... BOOM and the power lines overhead started flapping around. Returned to find an old dead tree, ~4-5' diameter had fallen right where I'd initially parked. Would've absolutely flattened my car, and me in it!

A friend of mine had a similar incident with a green ash limb about 5” in diameter where it snapped with no wind conditions. The wood was sound also. It seems that trees at this time of year have the MAXIMUM load on their branches when leaves reach their greatest mass before they fall. On the other hand the wood looks sound in your oak, but is there some defect or structural weakness at the cellular level that the naked eye does not see?

Several years back I had a branch snap off (Way smaller than the one you had there) one of my pine trees.
I was in the house, and heard what sounded like a bag full of pennies hitting the floor.
