Lane rope breaks at Olympic Trials swim meet (chaos)

The GB Aquatics Olympic Trials were one of the best produced and quickest meets we've seen in the LC pool in a long time outside of an Olympics or a World Championships. Swim meets at this level typically run pretty smoothly, but when dealing with as many moving parts as you do at a swim meet...something is bound to go wrong.

What a meet. The men's swimming was CRAZY. Proud 21.2 50free, Peaty back with a 57.9 100breast, Scott with a massive 200IM, 3 men sub48 in the 100 free, and a 1:46.9 coming SIXTH in the 200free final. Unbelievable scenes.

Loved watching the GB Aquatics, was well presented, produced and easily accessible. The return of Peaty, and the 200m free were pure class.

You missed the point where Oliver Morgan won the A Final and celebrated by Sitting on the lane rope, just after one had broken.

Most of my swimming buddies, and myself call them lane lines... other people I've heard them call ropes, never heard it called lane separator... Personally I like the "a bunch of buoys on a metal string, that if broken can cause chaos at a swim meet"

I work as a lifeguard and there's 2 different types of lane rope, you've got the bog standard lane rope that all pools have and you have what is called an anti-turbulence rope (an anti-turb), these are a lot thicker than a regular lane rope and are used for major competitions because they prevent turbulence from one lane affecting another lane. The ones used here look like anti-turbs and they should be.

And the long boi holding all those buoys together is a wire rope, not a metal string. It's a rope because it consists of multiple wires twisted together.

Thank you for the explanation about lane separators, Kyle. As a non-swimmer, this is the first time I've heard someone discuss them.

    • @populer208
      @populer208 5 місяців тому +2

To go more in-depth, the buoys prevent drafting. It is a common misconception that the water behind and next to swimmers flows backwards (from the kicking and pulling). The water around the swimmer actually goes forward with the swimmer. If you get next to a faster swimmer (without the lane dividers), you can ride their wave and keep up surprisingly easily. This is actually a fun game, have swimmers pair up, one puts their fins on. The other swimmer can keep up if they swim right in their hip.
That is the main job of the buoy dividers.

Kyle, great content. If you want to contrast production quality have a look at the South African trials streaming on You Tube at the moment. They don't even have a small clock running in the corner during the races so you can see how the swimmers are going. Not knocking them, I'm a South African myself but living in the UK now. Just would have a thought a clock would be useful for viewers.
Oh, and it's a LANE ROPE!
    Keep the content coming.

scary, happened to me, one evening at my club. Very old lane lines broke, and metal rope started wrapping around the other lanes, me and another non-swimmer, who was just aqua-jogging. Started to twirl and metal rope started sinking. Finally swam under and used emergency phone. At first, the front desk didn’t believe me and/or think it was an emergency….until I started yelling if they wanted to see some drown folks.

Hey Kyle, do you know what the rule is about putting manual lapcards in the water ? It's not explicitly stated that it has to be out of the water in the WA rules but we have a local meet coming up this weekend and they're insisting that the lap cards for 1500 & 800 have to be out of the water.

Well I was actually there when this happened and I think there were less t shirts fired out that you are trying to make out - it was a back stroker who broke the lane marker by the way - I cannot comment on the TV coverage as I was there nut there was clearly no issue within the crowd there 12 minutes between end of race when break occurred and intro of swimmers for next race

Glad no one was in the water. The tension on a lane line could do some damage. I do wonder why they didn’t use a net or even a life guard noodle to corral the pieces faster. . . One at a time seems slow.

Lane line, the only correct term. My pool growing up had old, bad lane lines. I was expert and replacing them. Dove in and grab the end of the cable (not metal string) to keep too many floats jailbreaking. Unhook the other end and hook new one to that. Swim to broken end and pull in new lane line. 5 minute job.

This video could have been 2 minutes long and had all of the same substance. Consider dialing back some of the chattiness a bit? Also less cuts back and forth to your face and what you are actually talking about, or just keep your face at the bottom right of screen if you really must. Seeing your face intermittently breaks up the flow and adds no value.
