Let's examine this symphony. Schubert was still only 25 when he wrote it. Beethoven was 30 when he wrote his first symphony. The musical style of Schubert, grew unprecedentedly between the 6th symphony of 1818 and this work. I think that's the mark of a great composer, to be able to do that. Thanks for this upload... Nice performance, but I wished he'd included the first movement repeat.
Just imagine, when the manuscript was finally given the performance in 1865, 37 years after Schubert's death, what a shock would it be to hear this masterpiece for the first time.
The balancing on this thing seems to be off somewhat. When I lower the volume, I can hear the winds and brass very well but the strings, especially the violins, disappear when playing piano or even mezzo forte. If i didn't know this piece so well, I would have no clue what the first and second fiddles are playing in the first few bars - the doubled sixteenth notes. If I want to hear the fiddles in the softer passages, my only choice is to raise my volume to a level i am not accustomed to - in that case, the brass and woodwinds are too loud for my ears. The performance itself, however, is fantastic.
A lot of you tube music videos use compressed sound. This means that there doesn't seem much difference between soft and loud passages. However with this particular recording, I don't find that too much..
Not a bad performance. I put dislike for the video - the person who chooses the video should have a better understanding of music. Pleasant views (especially with the autobahn) are not allowed in the first part. Sorry.

@@Alexagrigorieff yes. Thank God it was never lost. Even for 1865, it would've sounded fresh.
Bellisimo video
