Dass Schubert diese fabelhafte Sinfonie schon mit 16 Jahren komponierte!

Back in the Schubert's day, his early (up to 5) symphonies were considered unplayable, especially among those amateur orchestras which Franz asked to play. Thanks to the development of the instruments and the grown professionalism of the musicians, we can hear them today.

    • @TheVaughan5

Interesting comment about the development of instruments. Now we have "musicologist" conductors who only want to use period instruments of the time of composition no matter how inferior they sound. You can be 100% certain that 18th/early -mid 19th c. composers would be in awe of how wonderful their music sounds with the use of superior modern instruments.

Actually, I think, for todays instruments Schubert would have written a bit other music. When composing, he had in mind the instruments of his time.

I agree with you all. Think of how Beethoven would have responded to modern orchestras and the concert grand pianos that are used today to play his piano concertos and sonatas. I bet he would have loved the electric guitar too 😊.

BRAVO MAESTRO!!!!

When I heard Beecham's recording of Schubert's First back in the 1950's, I wondered why the work wasn't more popular, but I trust that the intervening years have brought a greater appreciation of this and his other early symphonies. This one has some of the weight of Beethoven, the wit of Haydn, and the elegance of Mozart, all in Schubert's developing musical voice, with its unique melodic and harmonic features. Maestro Orozco-Estrada and the FRSO have captured all of its zest and charm; thanks for sharing it in this great video!

Pretty good for a guy that was only 16 when he wrote this, The only other composer that was his equal was Mozart. It is a great shame that they did not live at least another 20 years. Just imagine the wonder music that would have been written.

RONALD: Well, Schubert loved Beethoven's D Major 2nd Symphony, and he put both his Symphony 1 and Symphony 3 in D Major...The huge difference is that his mother had died after he wrote the First...
He did not like having to be a teacher at his father's school in Vienna from 1810 to 1820, but he adjusted to the end of the Napoleonic wars with his musical gifts...

There is another composer who wrote even a more surprising good piece when only 16. Mendelssohn: Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20
Don‘t get me wrong, Schubert is my favorite classical composer (his „Winterreise” is the best ever written), but the Mendelssohn Octet is ingenious.

I, too, first heard this symphony on an LP in the mid fifties. I still marvel at the complete confidence of 15 year old Schubert. Many composers of that time would have been envious of this young genius if they had been given the opportunity to hear this wonderful music.

I love this symphony so much. I'm playing bassoon 1 on it and I don't know how to explain it but it draws out so much emotion in me when I am playing. Whenever I play 0:50 I am in tears because of how beautiful it is. Schubert was known as a great composer of vocal music and he really knew how to make the winds sing in his orchestral works.

I've never taken to Schubert's 9th symphony but this, his first, is an absolute winner! I don't know why its not performed more often. This performance has just the right amount of weight neither bombastic nor effete, thoroughly enjoyable though the best I've ever heard is by the Failoni Orchestra, Conductor: Michael Halász which has even more elan :-)

This is a very good performance, making no allowances for the youth of the composer, who wrote it at age 16. Thus we get to hear it as he intended. Orozco-Estrada emotes too much for my taste, but it is a good, solid rendering. The video and sound are also of high quality -- this orchestra seems to be a large stable of regulars from whom varying performers, of high quality, though, are drawn for particular performances.

One does wonder about the frequent change of personnel. I have not seen this lovely flutist before, for instance. I'd love to know how that all works. I wonder also where all the older musicians go. Do they have a senior orchestra? Are they pensioned off into retirement? I'm not complaining; just interested. This is my favorite orchestra in the world. As for Estrada's emoting, it seems to have a positive influence. His renditions are never dry and dusty. They have life! Bravo Estrada!

A naive young child writes Mozart's 42nd. Delightful. It serves as a missing link between what music was and what it would become. More texture and sound than melody. Like Wagner and Mahler.
