  • In his book 'Dalit Kitchens of Marathwada', Marathi writer Shahu Patole chronicles the culinary history of the marginalised Dalit communities and how living in dire poverty has led the community to develop their own food culture and recipes. We follow him through his village where he and his family share experiences of discrimination while preparing their afternoon meal.

No amount of words can express the gratitude we have towards babasaheb and our constitution!!! The most basic human rights and respect being snatched away by people because their minds were rotten, is beyond inhumane! I don't have much hope for our society, but the fact that the constitution has considered everyone equal, is a relief.

I am form punjab , and my father who is in public sector ( lucky for me ) , he used to tell that our forefathers had to work on fields of upper caste people, and in return they used to give us left over bread made of maize and rotten butter milk, they also used to go forest for hunting and he himself has done that in his early childhood.

Eating wild plants is not something only Dalits did, but i am surprised many of the plants he cooked is said to be poisonous here, i wonder how did those berries taste. what i really dislike though, was untouchability, which even lower caste people practiced against Dalits.

It's because of the social order, we are living in till now since centuries, and that is not made by us, you see there is concept of sanskritization in which lower caste people try to emulate high caste people.
The responsibility of annihilation of caste goes first those who made it.
And yes, the responsibility of shunning caste goes to educated also, but our society is just so fucked up to do that.

oh how some (Hindu) youngsters of today who grew up with relative comforts and oppose reservations would feel when they would be confronted by a video like this or a book like that. It must be so nice to live in a bubble and feel that everything is unjust when they have not even seen what real injustice looks like. Not even a slight glimpse of it. Major need of such awakening is needed in this country.

As an "upper caste" Hindu, I am a bit embarrased to say I never thought about this. That there would be a different cuisine for Dalits due to discrimination. Of course, it would differ from one region to another throughout the subcontinent. But even so.
I've seen videos of foods from all over the world, but never knew about this.
EDIT: There seems to be a misunderstanding among some in the comments. I used the double quotes around the words some of you find objectionable precisely because they are so. I don't believe in caste. The caste system is the root cause of India's suffering for about 2000 years, if not more. Dr. Ambedkar's Annihilation Of Caste is a work worth reading and understanding.

As for what u said, I can understand why many fellow Dalits don't want to be Dalits, it's bcuz d society treats dem badly. A dalits customs, cuisine etc are also viewed as inferior and polluting by the upper castes. So many Dalits n lower castes internalize d shame at a very young age n distance themselves from their ancestral cuisine n traditions. This has lead to dalit customs starting to perish overtime. Obviously not to discriminate other castes, but simply to say that the society can't try and cage me for being a dalit. I am free and no one can shame me or it. 🎉 🤯They suffer like we African Americans 🇺🇸 did after reconstruction. We have much in common & can rise up if we unify. But they come to America & try to become white by discriminating against us 🤯. THEY must destroy India’s 🇮🇳 racist & colorist caste system! Have pride to be Dark & Lovely like we black Americans are. ❤🗣️We love being black ✊🏿✊🏾looking black, & loving black 🫶🏾!!! ❤👨🏿‍🦱👩🏽‍🦱👦🏻👨🏾‍🦱🧑🏾‍🦱👩🏻‍🦱👩🏿‍🦱👶🏾👧🏻💪🏾 People literally try to be us. Tanning, wearing our hairstyles, trying to talk like us, trying to make music 🎶 like us, lying 🤥 & saying they’re black like Rachael Dolezal 👀 😂.

The discrimination is not just between varn but between jaati, as mentioned in the video the Chamar were treating the Mang and Mahar as untouchables (1:00)
If the dalit and obc unite they are the majority and no one can opress them. But we see a fractured populace and anyone can take advantage of that, be it upper caste, upper class, feudal lords or foreigners. In most states it obc and sc are split, if they unite they are unstoppable.

Wow!!! The history of the brutalities and mistreatment against the so-called lower castes by the so-called upper castes has not been documented enough. It is a curse and stain that will not only never wash off, it WILL be our undoing for eons to come. I am so happy that there is a real effort by these communities to showcase and document their stories. More power to them. I cannot wait to snag a copy!❤

This is a silly and in fact very funny problem so-called upper cast came up with why?? One of my friends who is from the upper cast was walking with me and he asked me do I eat beef 🐄 I told him that I don't but, when it was legal back in 2012 I used to eat it. He did not say anything but his face was sick, so I asked him if you got a chance to have an intimate relationship with a foreigner who eats beef will you accept it or not he said he would happily accept it 😂 so I asked him then why you have problems with us… he did not have an answer. It's just education, we all have the same DNA 🧬 there is no point in arguing that if any person from the upper cast doesn't want to eat beef no problem. (it's just a status game upper cast doesn't want to lose the status of the upper cast even if we all equal)
It's just money, education, and health. Which makes us different 🎉❤ WE ALL ARE SAME 🤝 NO ONE IS ABOVE US NO ONE IS DOWN US. Same same
