I got one recently to replace my older 24-105 FE lens which was longer & heavier. This physical difference is really noticeable.
However for a more casual walkabout lens, I still prefer a small prime, currently 35mm FE F/1.8 lens, which can also be used as backup when out taking wild life photography with my Tamron 50-400mm.
All these lenses perform brilliantly giving overall sharpness & freedom from flare & other artifacts. The auto focus is not too shabby either when used on my A9!
great review Dunna!
Great review thanks !
Creativity is important. You did a good job. Great review
Love your videos Dunna!
Thank you so much!
I just got the 25-105 and did not know about this one! Thanks Dunna
Nice to know!! Thanks!!
I always love the additions of the skits 😂😂😂
Interesting choice of music, I liked the close-up of moss with dance music😂
I wanted to do something a little different than my typical soft slow folk music with the hiking. Lewis Capaldi Remix seemed like a decent halfway.
Already ordered one. Might get a second if I love it!
Nice! Cant wait to hear how you like it!
Nice review as always, I just started to move from DSLR Nikon to Sony Mirrorless and I love the lens. I only need to bring one. And I think the title of this video should be " Sony 20-70mm F4 G upgrade kit lens."
Great content as always @Dunna. I'm sort of new to the Sony system, and primarily use my A7S3 for shooting underwater. This means my lens choice there is dictated by my housing. I am however always looking for better all-rounders than the 16-35 I got, as travelling with dive gear such as rebreathers, scooters, underwater housings, doesn't leave much space or weight for a full quiver of lens'. This little fella could really be nice for a variety of topside footage!
Your situation definitely sounds like it makes choosing lenses more difficult!
Great content
Got mine yesterday, that happy with it instead of my 24-105, which I've sold today. It's really sharp, compact, relatively lightweight, and has the ideal range for me to fit my needs. For me F4 is not really a problem, don't need fast apertures for good bokeh, don't shot people as much, and when I take my 85/1.8. When I need light, I crank up the ISO and use a good denoise software (DXO PR2 and Topas are really amazing for that!). I'm that lucky, that Sony has the buckets to make this lens, because at the moment it's too expensive in Europe, and it will not reach the mass I think.
What did you like better about it over over the 24-105? Size and weight? I’m sure the focusing is better on the newer lens as well.
@@holdmyown32 size, weight, sharpness, AF, at least 20mm over 24mm, in my last holiday in England and Wales I really don't have to switch lenses often.
thanks for sharing. Really nice composition. All the best from Frankfurt am Main, Daniel
Thank you too!
Hilarious intro ! Would you say this will autofocus quick enough for a running dog? Thanks
Hi Dunna, how do you find this lens compare to T28-200 for photography?
e.g. when T in 28mm F2.8 ISO 1000, to get a proper exposure in low light (city light)
but due to S2070 only could start at F4 then by pushing ISO in a7iv to get the same explore, not sure what would it be for the result. especially for indoor / city night couple photography without flash to simulate the travel used.
really curious would the image become very noisy or still useable for personal use.
also the sharpness, since S20-70 sharp like no body in the middle, not sure can compare from 28 - 70 then from the 70-200 onward maybe can using crop factor to compare it.
the comparison can use a image capture from daily life will do.
haha, just want to understand more, cos really have a hard time when to decide which lens should have for travel and also able to use when not in sunny day.
T2875 G2, T28-200, S20-70 + 35GM 1.4 + 55 1.8
with T2875G2 need + 16-28 , but 20-70 can cover for all
how ever 20-70 is F4, as 99% photo, 1% video, so cant decide which to use @@
if compact or travel maybe 20-70 + 35/55 mabe the best combination .
Great Video, what do you think using this lens as a vlogging lens. I currently use the Tamron 17-28
I love a 20mm for vlogging! I thing this would be great. I always struggle when clogging with a wide angle zoom with not being able to flip the camera around quickly and zoom in to show what I’m talking about so this lens would be perfect!
Great review! I may trade my 24-105 for it, but I do love it - tough decision! I do have the option of stitching to get a wider view, but…
Great video 😉
Glad you enjoyed it
I think your description of this lens being an ideal upgraded "kit lens" for people just getting into the Sony system is very appropriate, especially if you want a single lens but also want to vlog or do other self-filming type stuff. For those that already have an existing lens collection though, I'm not sure this lens really fills any voids or is a better replacement compared to other options on the market. As with most "jack of all trades" lenses, it does a lot of things *pretty* well but it isn't necessary a master at any of them, and that's my hangup with it. 70mm is pretty short for telephoto purposes, so for me personally, I wish they instead did something like a 20-40 or 20-50 f2.8 and traded a little bit of reach for more light. If I were shopping for a true all-arounder though, I'm not sure this offers more versatility than the 24-105 f/4 G OSS. I think this is more of an all arounder if your "all around" usage favors a wider FOV.
Love this point of view, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@@dunnadidit I carry two lenses in my every day bag, the Sigma 14-24 f2.8, and the Tamron 35-15- f2-2.8. Both heavy lenses though, but at least I know I've got all angles covered, and I'm getting fit while I carry the bag :)
If I had to go up a mountain, I'd take the lightweight Sony 35mm and 85mm f1.8 primes, and look for ways to make them work.
f4 is a dealbreaker for me.
Thank you for the video! Considering swapping out my 20mm f/1.8 G and Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 for it, but I think I’d miss the wider aperture. I love the idea of the 20-70 walk around do it (mostly) all lens though.
Dont’ get rid of that 20 1.8! My favorite lens
Yeah I don’t know that id replace any primes with this. I’d be looking at it more as a one and done walk around lens.
Man Dunna, Dunna is so impatient 🤣🤣🤣🤣 This is good info to a smaller all arounder. Thx for the info
You see those tally lights? We’re rolling.
Would the auto focus on this lens be better than on Tamron 28-75? Sony A74
This looks great if we are talking about a daytime lens. I just can’t get around to relying on an f/4 for a day/night lens.
I use a trash 50 f/1.8 on my a7iii and get some rough photos once the sun goes down, so I can only imagine how much worse it’ll be losing those stops of light.
I hear ya!
Great review Dunna -- I'm a Batis fan and curious how this will "fit" within my kit. Howver, I'll likely be using it in a "minimal" kit when I'm travelling/camping on a motorcycle - one lens that does it all.
That’s exactly where my brain goes too. This lens doesn’t really “replace” anything in my mind, it just kind of lives for its own purpose.
I like this.
I always joke that photography is all about compromises. I know I like the idea of having this lens...BUT... I think I would always opt for a 16-35 F2.8 or a 24-70 F2.8 (or pack both). For my photography I am usually a lot more willing to sacrifice on focal range rather than aperture because shallow DOF allows me to isolate subjects and simplify photos... I feel it gives me more creative options. I guess thats why I often opt for primes over zooms also.
when is the 12-400mm f/1.2 AF pancake lens comming out?
😂
Love from India your video is to good👍
Thank you so much 😀
Do you enjoy the A7iv more than your fx3? Great content
Thats a super tough one. If I only shot video, the fx3 is the go to! But because I'm a hybrid shooter, the a7iv is fantastic. I have been trying to shoot those segments with the a7iv because its a bit more accessible for more people so the samples are hopefully more helpful!
Thanks, I learned a few things. Firstly, I searched and discovered about the PKOLS. Secondly, I was wondering how you were allowed to have Lewis Capaldi playing on your vid. Now know how. But more importantly, I am considering returning to my former hobby amateur photography. Seriously considering purchasing the Sony A7iv. Was interested in the 20 -70 lense when it was announced a month back. Now feel I have enough info to make a really educated purchase.
Glad to hear that the video was helpful in a couple different ways!
I'm tempted to trade in my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 for this just based on the size and weight difference. I rarely shoot below f4 anyway.
Sounds like it could work for you!
Did you? I did.
I do way to much night shooting to own a lense without a high aperture.. I really need those stops to get some light in haha, but it's a fine lens tho!
I hear you! Not for everyone for sure if you need those wider apertures!
These are the lenses that want me to stick to Sony ! Great video man 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for watching!
This or the Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8? Which would you choose?
No one can answer that for you. Need low light performance? Tamron, of course. Need reach? Sony, then. Need both? Neither, 24-70/2.8.
You should compare it with the Sony 18-105 F/4 for APSC, wouldn’t make much sense but will be a good video 😁
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll consider it!
18 is equivalent to 27mm so a different kettle of fish.
Do you know if this is compatible with the teleconverters?
Interesting question! To be honest I don't know the answer to that for sure but I don't think it would be.
@@dunnadidit What is the difference in G vs G Master? I picked up a used 2x teleconverter and wanted to use it with my 70-200 but mine is the F4 G not G Master so the teleconverter doesn't fit. Figured I'd hang on to it since I want to get nicer lenses in the future and its a small piece that can double to usability of your lens if I could find a good lense it will work with.
So far, only the 600 4.0, 400 2.8, 200-600 G, 100-400 GM and 70-200 GM I and II are compatable with teleconverters. I REALLY wish the 135 GM was in that group.
Sony kind of has 3 tiers of glass. There’s the blank ones that are the bottom tier, nothing wrong with them but they’re usually cheaper and have less fancy selling points. G lenses are in the middle, lots of f4 glass and often trying to make higher quality affordable and light (which means some small drawbacks sometimes) GM lenses are the top tier glass and usually have all the bells and whistles both internally and externally, but they’re super pricey.
I have 20 1.8. waiting for 24-105 oss ii
Fingers crossed you get it!
Why would they update that lens? Don't think they can make it 2.8 without making it weigh a ton.
To make it even sharper and lightweight. F4 is plenty for me for that focal range. I just bought Tamron 50-400. Its heavy but very versatile. I think I will buy 16-35gmii for my wide angle zoom.
Got a question about Lickd. How does UA-cam know the songs are from Lickd and not downloaded from the web and used in the video? 🤔(Answer might be obvious but I don't have a clue. Don't judge me 🤷🏽♂️)
When you use a mainstream song from lickd you put your license number in the description and you get it cleared with LICKD before you go public (set the video to unlisted and send them an email). There are some that are automatic and some that are a bit more manual, but youtube will flag it first and then you get it removed.
Always love your videos. It is a good travel lens. But the pricing here in Australia doesn’t make sense. It’s 2000 AUD. And the 24-70 GM II I bought when discounted was 2200 AUD….. 200 AUD difference…
That’s not the first that I’ve heard of weird pricing outside of North America. I wonder what’s going on there??
@@dunnadidit #downundertax
😂 best opener
extra width or a bigger aperature? that is the question for me...
How can you get such good audio outdoors?!
I used both a shotgun and a wireless lav just in case. I believe this whole thing ended up being the shotgun mic (rode videomic go ii). But on top of that, I've been an audio engineer for 15+ years so I have some processing tricks up my sleeve that would be too long to fit in a comment haha. Maybe I'll make a video some time!
@@dunnadidit well that escalated quickly.
I didn't expect the Doctors
Your camera guy is a bit rude. You might consider hiring someone a bit more "Professional" next time ;)
Haha yeah, he's a bit tough to work with sometimes.
A bit rude? That's the worst camera man I ever did see, and I have seen many in my long career. The guy videoing the over all seen was the best. You wouldn't even know there was the third guy :-)~
@@dunnadidit Basically Chris and Jordan 😂
why would you buy this if you already owned the 24-105G f4? Other than it's a bit lighter?
If you also wanted the lighter option, wider wide end, newer focus motors and tech… honestly, I don’t see a lot of people keeping both, but maybe thinking of this as an upgrade if they find they don’t need the 70-105 range as much.
I wish this was a 20-50 2.8
There is a Tamron 20-40 f/2.8, very small and light. The 40 mm is a bummer though, unless you have an A7 R body with high-MP which allows you to non-destructively go APS-C mode.
@@megamastah I got the 20-70mm f4 Sony. Great lens. Now Sony comes up with the 24-50mm f2.8 and 16-25mm f2.8. Sigma has the 16-28 and Tamron has the 17-28, both f2.8. Sony also has the 16-35 f4 PZ. Seeing this I want to cry. I do think the 20-70mm f4 is the best all around lens. Lose one stop is not a problem, a greater zoom range is more satisfying. If I need anything wider, I have the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8, which is wider than all the other lenses. If I was to drag a lens to an event, amusement park, vacation, the 20-70 will serve better than all of them.
@@bondgabebond4907 agree. I just pop in a 50 1.8 or (hopefully soon) 35 1.4 for the evening/night and I'm set. Add to that a 70-200 F4 G2 and the compact set is complete.
But the price...here in Germany for about 1599 Euro :/
Ok, are we going to talk about those backpack camera clips? Those don't look like PD so what are they!!?!?
They’re pgytech!
Wow! Nice footage! The only question is why camera guys of say harry potter movie had never shoot themselves walking with those cool panavision cameras, on say, some hills… or mountain. Only this stupid wizards…
Pricing in europe made this lens DOA for many sony shooters despite it's performance. Shame really
Interesting! Thanks for sharing.
Music kind not matching the topic
Game changer if the barrel didn’t extend…
Interesting! Haven’t heard that one yet! Thanks for sharing.
@@dunnadidit that reply doesn’t make sense at all Dunna 😂
Sure it does lol. I found it interesting that you’re so worried about the barrel extending because I haven’t heard anyone say that it was a big deal to them. Then I thanked you for sharing your perspective. Makes perfect sense lol.
@@dunnadidit ah ok now it makes sense. At first glance I though that reply was meant for someone else’s comment! Anyway, I was hoping they had magical new tech that would enable this to be all internal like the 16-35mm f/4 G, one of my favourites.
Can you imagine how much you could get done if there were two of you… man…
Dude… i could actually do half of what I want to be able to do then!
