I made these videos as a basic course on playing blues in open D. Open D is a fun and easy tuning to play and compose in. Once you learn the basics you can improvise endlessly in it. You don't have to play slide in open D. A lot of blues as well as folk artists have used this tuning to great effect.
I first started in this tuning 20 years ago. I really wish I would have had someone to show me some of the basics to begin with. These licks and chords in open D are just things I picked up here and there over a number of years. You can tune any guitar to open D. Have fun! You can check out the second video here • Open D Chords and Lick...

A treasure trove of slide knowledge.
Thank You for the lessons. I've learned more from you than anyone else, ever. Thanks!
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your knowledge and uploading it. You’ve helped me immensely and through your generosity have given me a wonderful tool for self entertainment and a way to make cash. When I took up guitar after years of percussion. My friend who’s classical guitar said I would never be broke or without friends . He was right l
Thanks for watching and your kind comment. Glad if it helps in some way. There's a lot you can do with a little :)
@@myfreebluesguitarlessons yeah totally. I’m more secure now but a few years ago. Your lessons paid for a few meals and a guitar. Just wanted you to know that your work is appreciated. 🇬🇧
@@jambutty2218, good to hear :)
From argentina, thanks,very good lesson
Agree with many of the comments...outstanding vid! You’re a great teacher and not shy about sharing your knowledge! Thanks so much!!

Thanks for watching. Glad if it helped.
Excellent lesson, thank you!
Thanks for checking it out.
Hey wonderful teaching 👍👏👏👏👍🤠
Thanks for watching. Hope it helps.
Marvelous, best 38 minutes spent on UA-cam yet. Just found your video and may I say awesome job. As a blues fan I just started using this tuning and it is so much easier getting that raw Delta Blues sound. Even though I don't have a Resonator yet, my acoustic sounds fantastic in this tuning. I really like how you combined a compilation of licks. Again Sir, Awesome.
+hammer 1963 Thanks, and thanks for watching.
Grossman I've heard of, and I think he has a channel here, I think I watched a guy named Ernie Hawkins there. I've seen Ernies videos elsewhere, but he did standard tuning blues stuff. Most people do. Open tunings are so wide open and yet people will teach just a song in the tuning. I like people to learn to improvise in the tuning as well. I never had anyone to teach me so I was always wandering around in open tunings. That's kind of the way I teach them :)
I picked up a pyle resonator off of Amazon for under 2 bills. Not a life long friend but great sound, once i get a little better, i may move up a model or two, but it is killer to play.. way better slide sound then my Gretsch. That "hub cap" adds a lot.
WOW! 3 THUMBS UP! You've got me inspired. I've played guitar for many years and with some of the best. I always loved the blues and the whole slide thing especially. I tried quite a few times to learn it but never got to a point where it felt natural to me. I'm giving it another whirl and feeling good about it. Thank you for a good kick in this old vintage butt!
Hey, thanks for watching and your comment. Nothing like being inspired. Glad if it helps in some way :)
Useful lessons. You're both a gifted player and a patient instructor. Thank you.
amazing lesson, thanks so much
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
This is an outstanding D/Slide video, really appreciate the time you've taken to share this knowledge

Great lesson! Motivate me to go on, it indeed hard in the beginning and gave up several times. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. Just stick with it :)
Very nice, You take your time in explaining things for us mortals!!!
Great job and some lovely noise coming out of that guitar.
The blues are just the best!!
Thank you so much! Just got a Gretsch Honey Dipper as a gift from a GREAT friend who is a guitar monster.....and need some open d licks....which you provided.. .thanks...
Thanks for watching.
Keep up the good work man!!!! I am 2 weeks into learning, while in school full time, and also working 45 hours a week. But I am getting to the point that music heals my soul while I'm at work and instead of going on a "BREAK", I spend my time at the guitar store; JAMMING and playing on other more expensive guitars that I can't afford! I am really trying to teach myself musical theory, and also learn how to master OPEN D, and even OPEN E, though similar, they both have such unique tones! Glad I stumbled my way into a Guitar Center so I could kick off this incredible journey I have been on! Funny I own 3 guitars by Taylor, and my name is Taylor, maybe it was destiny!!!! HAHAHAHA
Hey, have fun, and thanks for your comment and watching :)

Great job Bravo al
A handy tip for developing your slide ear. Take some tunes that you know by heart. "Happy Birthday" , "Amazing Grace", or something else and figure them out just on the high string. Once you have the tune confidently under you slide, play it without looking at your left hand. You will immediately know when you dork a note. Correct it without looking. I still use this method when learning new lead lines by ear. I figure them out on one string then once I am sure of the notes I move across the fretboard. Hope that makes sense.
It took me well over five years to get anywhere near ok at slide. I would have a little go every day after my practice. I eventually found a friend that played slide well. He showed me what he did. I have got to the point where I can jam with it. Well worth learning. I love the sound and being able to make it myself. Your videos are up there with the best on UA-cam.
Thanks. Yeah I just work on it a little at a time. It is such a fun and expressive way to play guitar.
thanks so much very helpful
Thank You for watching.
You are awesome man!! Great teacher..I spent a year learning standard tuning and then met Don Young and Marc Schoenberger. I know own amd play 20s and 30s Nationals..Your lessons are So easy to follow..You are easy to listen to Over and Over..I come back over and over to pick up and perfect each little piece. Keep the open D licks coming!!
Please do MORE open D stuff for us.....Great style and teacher
Nice easy Lessons, appreciate you taking time to put on youtube, your guitar sounds fantastic.
Just started learning open D, so you video was great. cheer's
Those strings are a medium gauge john pearse resophonic strings. The high string is .13 I use them on all my nationals. On acoustic guitar I use medium gauge martins or other brands.
there is absolutly nothing like a person like you who just makes it sound sick
Is .12 gauge also possible to use . I am mainly doing fingerstyle and bending.
Such an informative video. Thank you for taking the time to make this. I have watched this several times now since picking up slide a few months ago and it's been a massive help for me. Made a lot of things click. Take care, Rich.
Hey, thanks for your kind comment and for watching :)
Thank you for these tips, my practice of the guitar is easier since a few hours. I used to play EADGBE and wanted to try open D; it's like i am a beginner playing for 20 years, so it's like a challenge; really motivating, and your video helps a lot, really. (sorry for my grammar, i'm french)
just tuned my cheap telecaster copy to d it's now staying in this tuning forever great lesson man cheers

Have just watched this through with guitar in hand; accessed a few of the licks and enjoyed learning and succeeding. I can see myself watching this one over and over again. Great video brother, love it.

Good information here.... as I watch this I can't help thinking about the original guys down in the delta , man them guys had it rough , but this music is true Americana.

Fantastic Lesson! This lesson has put all the missing pieces I needed. I could play the licks in standard tuning but I've been struggling in open tuning. This has made it a snap. Great job!
absolutely great teaching man! helped me out alot, just getting into it and I know some of the basics but you're really helping me out! Not all hero's wear capes, they also play slide lol. Great video man!
+Scooter McCall , if it helped that's great. I remember back when I was trying to learn this tuning and there was no youtube....lol....that's what I was thinking when I made this.....what are the basics I wish someone would have shown be back then?
I know this video is old, but it's awesome. Subscribed! Keep them coming! I cant wait to watch more of your lessons.
Thanks for watching. Glad if it helped. I did a follow up video to this just recently here ua-cam.com/video/-NTzTS5CgSY/v-deo.html
Thank you very much for your cours, I am a beginner Please tell me the type of the strings on this guitar , is it 10 or 11 if I want to install new cords on my guitar.
On this guitar i have john pearse respphonic strings that are .13's Thank you very much for watching.
Thanks for your advice and encouragement!

My town is so small I'm the only person that really plays blues stuff. For me I was never concerned about how good I, or any other player was. I don't strive to be good. I strive to be interesting to myself first. If others get off on it that's great. I get more out of showing what I've learned than playing for others really. The Blues is just a puzzle I constantly work on. Simple, but not easy :)
How tight should the slide be on your finger? I've got my slide on my pinky, but it feels pretty loose. I can see you've got your slide jammed on, tightly, only halfway down your finger! Should I try and find something smaller? I've picked up two "regular" slides that don't seem to fit as they should. Maybe mine are meant for ring fingers only? Do you know the diameter of your slide??
What I do is take electrical tape, cut it in squares, then place them evenly halfway in the slide all around. I keep trying it on while doing this to get the right fit. Hope that helps :)

Thank you for this interesting lesson
Maybe a national tricone....12 fret.
Yes!
Dam do people like this guy really exist..cant be real..what a nice guy man DAM...gonna pick my dobro resonator back up...it was gathering dust, you just set fire and now the flame is ignited...much gratitude to you..and your slide is FINE ;)
that guitar looks like a fucking robot
Yeah. Imagine what they thought of that design when it came out in the late 20's?
@@myfreebluesguitarlessons lmao!
Its a Decepticon!
lol, yep!
Are they just a medium gauge? Or are they special for that guitar?
Medium gauge resonator strings...
What do you have to say about string height? If you have a friend that does not play slide and he hands you his guitar that he had set up to play "nice and low," can you just grab your brass slide and play as easily as you normally do? What should a beginner tell a guitar tech to do if he wants to, not only capo and play folks songs in standard tuning, but also tune to an open chord and play slide? What or where is that set-up sweet spot that allows the player to do all of that on one guitar??? Please help! :-)
Yes, I can play on a low action because it's how I learned. My guitars aren't set up specifically for slide. I play a low action on electrics, acoustics, and resonators. Just tell whoever is setting your guitar up to set it for regular and slide playing.
Thank you for reveling the truth....many hours of practice ...good video
Thanks, and thanks for watching.
Wow I was truly humbled today. You can make that thing sing!!! Thank you brother🤘
Thanks. I loved that guitar. They're all gone now, fire, drunk guy with a cigarette. Fighting with the insurance company. But I'll never be able to replace her.
What kind of guitar are you playing? I am just starting on open d using a yamaha acoustic.
It's a National Black Rust Tricone. You can use any guitar for open D!
@@myfreebluesguitarlessons My ear must be getting better, I just knew that had to be a National, so warm, I thought you were plugged in at first. Waiting for my first Tricone to arrive today as a matter of fact.
Have fun with it. Very unique guitars :)
What gauge of strings are you using?
john pearse .13's
P.S. you are a pretty damn good slide player... don't ever think you're not!
Thanks, and thanks for watching and your comments.
Great lesson, this is the kind of video i was talking about as I think the finger timing and constant thumb is the part it'' take time to get used to and i have some finger pucks on the way. I think as a beginner a slowed down version on how to do the timeing on the finger picking stuff if that makes sense? I love the classic blues shuffle and turn arounds with it and fillers coming off those. Thank you.
Yeah. I can do another one slowed down more.
There aren't many good lessons about slide guitar on the internet. I learned a lot from you. Thank you so much. This film is a really big step for open D begginers like me.
What great material. You have the skills of music and teaching. Thank you for sharing.
That is one hell of a tricone sliding inbetween the fret and no pressure applyed ..
Know what you said you wernt that good to find out if your near a big town go their take a chair and find the main Bus area take a chain and your hat toss it down and start playing for the hat and play for a period no less than 3 maybe 4 hours. Whats in the hat will tell you how good you are .
You are smooth. I appreciate your style of playing and teaching. Works for me. Thank you very much for what you are doing.
Coolest guitar playing ever! Leaned a lot from this lesson.
Hey thanks! I'm glad it helped!
Please, how did you manage to get the blues slide to fit your finger and not be loose? I'm asking this because every slide I put on my finger feels loose.
Take some electrical tape, cut small squares and stick them inside the slide until it fits and isn't loose anymore :)
@@myfreebluesguitarlessons Perfect, thank you very much teacher🥰😍🥳
Wow. Great teaching video! Thanks so much. I've been playing slide in that tuning for years, and for the last year hours a day. And I still learned a number of cool things!
Appreciate you making this.

Great video 👍🏴
Thanks for watching it.
Nice vid. I may end up watching this a few times. I didnt get it right away but ur so right.
Hi from the UK, great lessons! Just what I needed, thank you so much.
Thank you very much. Just started slide and this long video allowed me to learn your licks while playing it. Love your guitar too. You got a "dirty" style which is exactly what I was looking for
Thanks for watching and your comment. Glad if the video helps :)
I haven't seen all the slide players on her but you are right. It's about the ear. Being from austin texas and listening to blues i just feel it. Im not horrible and I've only been doing it consistently for a year. I think it's easy. Not bargin on ya but you are clarifying what I want to do. Notes and slide. Sweet brotha. Thanks.
Thanks for checking it out and commenting.
Absolutely fantastic video! I've played acoustic guitar for many years - but never ventured off into the slide. However, this video inspires the hell outta me, and I want to kick back and jam to the memorizing sound of the slide. Thanks so much - I thoroughly enjoyed watching!
Thanks for watching. It is fun to add another dimension to your playing.
Thank You so much for these tutorials. So helpful and informative love your playing and teaching style. Thanks again Bob
Still works!
Great video! I've been playing for a fair bit and I still picked up a few new licks. Way too many slide videos on youtube just cover how to tune and the very basic damping techniques. Well done, sir.
I know. That's always been a bit of a mystery to me. Why does almost every single video on slide have to be geared towards the absolute beginner? There are a lot of people beyond the very early stages of learning slide guitar.
Very cool, I've played open G but never in open D. This was a big help.
Thanks. Happy it helped. Thanks for watching.
Amazing video great info thanks
Hey, thanks. Glad if it helped in some way :)
thanks for your resonator vid's i have been trying to learn bottleneck
Great, it helps! thanks very much . you have a great resonator
Thanks for this and your other lesson videos. They're really helping me a lot.
Thank you so much for this, just what I wanted from instruction, I qwsh for you be my teacher, you are right on my friend
You seem like a good guy and I appreciate any help I can get with slide guitar - I'm going to check out your website, but I gotta tell you, that CONSTANT tapping, or banging every time you start another lick or riff is REALLY irritating and distracting...
What IS that TAPPING, every time you start a new lick?
Just consider my big mouth comment as criticism to make your videos better!
Yes, it is a good criticism, and I've addressed this in another video somewhere on here. When you first start playing slide you'll knock around and bang a lot, that means that you're slide is at too much of an angle on the first string. Now all slide players do it to a degree and the greatest ones barely, but you can still hear it from time to time. It isn't as noticeable on an acoustic of course. Because of the angle I'm at and the sensitivity of the sound on this camera and the fact it's a loud resonator guitar it's very pronounced. I have to lean in with this crappy camera and I'm a little off as a result. You'll here it on other videos I do too. I play with a very low action and am fine when playing normally. In videos where I'm sharing ideas the low action doesn't help at all. Trust me, you'll hear it again on other videos I do because I'm leaning down towards the camera. Sitting in my place showing someone something on any of my nationals is a lot different because my slide isn't at an angle and that banging is rarely there. It's very pronounced on guitars that rely on an aluminum cone to project the sound. Every little bang and tap is very loud.
@@myfreebluesguitarlessons
No I wasn't talking about you know that slide tapping and banging around that's not it there's like an On-time, rhythmic, almost like a MICROPHONE loud knock or something it's like a bang or KNOCK, but only when you START to do a different lick or something- watch the video with headphones and you'll see what I'm saying....
I'm just trying to be helpful because your video is great other than that don't mean to be picky I just thought you would want to improve the quality...
@@luapsel77 , went through the whole video. No idea what you're hearing. Just the guitar knocking and banging here and there. No one else has ever mentioned what you're hearing. I have had a couple new videos that people said they could hear an annoying hissing. I don't hear that in my headphones or speakers, or the noises you're talking about.
@@myfreebluesguitarlessons maybe it was something only on my video only on my phone or something I don't know I mean it wasn't it was definitely noticeable it was like a knock you know right before you started strumming you know the next line the next Rift whatever but you know what it didn't it didn't mess up the the lesson I still got everything out of it you know I was just wondering what it was I'll have to watch it again just for the hell of it seems still there anyway guys thanks again for your great slide playing and your teaching info !
@@luapsel77 , yeah, these guitars are very dynamic and loud. I imagine on phone speakers it might not sound that good.
This is by far the best slide lesson I've found on UA-cam. I've had a ton of fun exploring the ideas shown on this video.
Thank you!
Thanks, and thanks for watching. new ideas are fun to explore :)
Thank You for watching!
Someone please help me out! When I slide down from the second to third fret on that first lick my note does:( how does he make it sound so good?
You have to do it again and again and again and again. That's the key to anything I guess. repetition.
Magic vid learnt so much. Clear and easy to understand, a must for anyone starting out in blues resophonic slide.
Thanks.
I have the same color National!
I love it.
Awesome video! Would you say a Slide player has an easier time playing a fretless guitar/bass?
No, they're completely different although they rely on the same principles...like muscle memory and your ear.
10 minutes in i have enough to practice and fool around for hours! Im playing the blues man
Good, that's the ways it's supposed to be :)
