Ahhh the days when EMD ruled! There’s nothing quite like the sound of a herd of 645’s going by☺️

I enjoy the sound of a dash 9 in notch 8, but it’s nothing like this! I wish I was alive when SP and Rio Grande were a legit thing.

...I spent a lot of time rail fanning the D&RGW in the 1980s and 1990s...never thought it would be gone...then one day it was...

I know it PR!!! You just take it for granted it will be there forever, then you turn around, and its gone. Thanks for watching...

Wow, that took me back. Lived in Steamboat and heard that again and again and again, at least four times a day. Do miss those motors and my wasted youth.....thanks.

Not gonna lie, the D&RGW went through some of the best scenery in the united states, maybe even North America. Desert valleys with shrubs and grass galore and mountains with creeks and pine trees as far as the eye can see.

Wonderful video, Jack! Really brings back the memories of early 1971 when I was a ski bum living in Minturn and working/Skiing in Vail. I've been a Railfan all my life, and I can remember vividly when they would crank up a new train, 'Heading for the Pass', I would drop whatever I was doing to run outside and stare in wonderment at the awesome sight before me! It was quite literally, like NOTHING that I had ever seen on rails before! I always waited for the Thundering Helpers in the middle with great anticipation! The ROAR was incredible because there was always SO MANY of them! It has been a long, long time (47 YEARS!) but as best as I can recall, the 'record' for the most Middle Helpers that I counted was ELEVEN!! They shaved the side of a mountain off when they laid those rails, and the roar of all eleven of those SD-40T-2s was bouncing off the mountain and drumming my chest!
BTW: Back then, the engines were shiny black with bright orange lettering. At some point, the D&RGW was bought out; I think that it was a rich oilman? At that point, maintenance practically ground to a halt. If it wasn't absolutely necessary to keep the engine running, it didn't get done. Same for the SP when he bought it out. The D&RGW and the SP had the filthiest, smokiest engines that you could find in the whole USA!
    Thank you so much, Jack!
    Yogi

Can't beat that sound with a stick. Never get tired of it. CSX runs a good many sd40-2's yet, and sometimes solid sets. I'll be laying in bed at night and hear them roaring eastbound past the house, and I get the biggest smile on my face. Man!!!! That sounds great... Thanks for watching...

Thanks for watching Keith, and being a loyal viewer. I'll probably edit other stuff from Tennessee Pass in the near future. This was all I had on this train, and I wished I followed him all the way to Minturn. But I left me wife at the motel while she was getting ready, and told her I would only be about an hour. So I had to brake it off at Kobe.

No problem, thanks again for keeping the past alive. This stuff means far more to younger fans than you may realize. The breadth and depth of your coverage is awe-inspiring. Is there any rail operation in North America you and fmnut didn't shoot in the '80s and '90s?
I'm lucky to have a tolerant and somewhat enthusiastic wife myself, but I don't think I'd drop a trio of Grande tunnel motors for her though and she knows it! ;p

I was lucky to see one of these classics still in the DRGW black and gold about 2 years ago in Golden, CO at the coors brewery. unfortunately some dumbass kid had graffitied half the name on one side! Wish there were still a few out there to give us another show on Soldier Summit...hope they will take that line out of embargo soon.
