  • Restored 1965 BSA Lightning Rocket. The BSA Lightning Rocket was a BSA motorcycle made in Birmingham. A highly tuned version of the BSA A65R Rocket this was BSA's bid to capture the potentially lucrative USA export market in the mid-1960s. Twin Amal 389/206 carburettors and high compression pistons combined with an optional close ratio gear box to give lively acceleration.

I drove a 1965 BSA Lightning once when I was a teen and it the Lightning is still my favorite motorcycle, and Oh the beautiful sound out of those twin pea shooters, music to my ears.

I had one of these when I was 23. It was the first big bike that I'd ever owned and a real turning point for me. 29 years later and I wish that I still had it, a truly beautiful motorcycle.

to bob murphy the sound of the triumph Bonneville was the best sound ever! Chick magnet! another friend had a bser lightning rocket and he raced my friend with the bonnie at 1 in the morning in long beach ca on 7th st. all yellow lights at 110 mph and once in awhile a red light behind them but they split and go thru sidestreets and park behind some rv and the cop would go flying by! the BSA Rocket had opposing heads and when you shifted gears you knew they were in gear; clunk!!!

I took my old Bonnie up to 110mph once but didn't hold it there long as it felt like it was shaking to bits.. I could just hear Scottie saying "She can't take much more of this, Cap'n.." ;-0

The B.S.A I bought off an old man said its short for "bastard start again". Never had a problem with that, just needed a tune up

Cold start aid only on the handle bar, it's not a conventional choke, it needs to be fully open again as soon as its started.

Very nice sir, can't beat the sound of a BSA, I have a 63 A65 myself and I'm looking around for a good helmet cam to take some videos of my ride outs.

Check front brake set-up, angle of arm is less than ideal - it should reach about 90 degrees when fully applied.
Fabulous looking bike with a gorgeous sound.

@@A65Bill that's how they come, I thought EXCACTLY the same when I got mine but there is no adjustment on it, no fine adjustments at all, the flats on it take it way past being able to connect it again. They all go past the 90 I'm afraid

Rode one, in 1965. I know it would do 120 mph, but I became too shy after that. I wonder how fast it would have gone?

I reckon its the prettiest bike ever made , & you can make them reliable with the right main upgrade , but to really improve the vibration that invariably shakes them selves to bits get a norton 270deg crank ,& gear it up . check out youtube ' British Bikes by Brian' . good stuff

I currently own one now, and I agree with Mike Stamper, I have traced mine back to the show room where it was originaly bought. I have made mods to mine because I regularly ride it, go eo bridportclassicbikeclub web site and see more info.
