Magic Johnson is quite possibly the most class act ever. When he said he planned to live for a very long time, younger folks just can't understand how courageous a statement that is given the time. This was a landmark announcement, not just in sports, but in life. This completely destroyed the negative stereotype that HIV is a gay man’s disease. This brought awareness that it is a fully transmittable virus, both sexually and by blood, among heterosexual people as well.
I can tell Magic was choked up by this, because announcing you’re HIV Positive is devastating, but he fought on and lived, and is fully undetectable.

I still remember the moment every local TV and radio station in the nation interrupted their programming for live breaking news for Magic's announcement. His fans literally cried as they were being interviewed by local news stations near the Great Western Forum because they knew it was the end of an era. I recall hating the him and the Lakers during this time in my childhood (The Celtics fan in me). Fast forward to nearly 28 years later as I look back and realize what a brave and courageous soul this man is. I can't even begin to imagine what it took for him to come out on live national television in a room full of people as well as the millions of viewers to fully disclose the status of his health and the ridicule he had to endure in the coming years from the media, fellow players, as well as the general public largely due in part of how ignorant society was about the virus at that time. He will forever be an iconic hero of American History on and off the court.

How many women are dead all because they allowed themselves to be Magic Johnsons cum dumpsters. He lives on and is a hero. Disgusting. I remember, ironically, that I was getting ready for basketball practice at my community college when my teammate ran into the locker room and said "Magic has AIDS." Of course we didn't believe him. There was no internet back then. But we found a TV and turned it on, and it wasn't AIDS, but it was HIV. Most of us didn't know the difference. We didn't cry, we were all in shock through practice. I went home and Magic appeared on Arsenio Hall that night. He was so brave the way he handled it.

Nikita Davis wow lol of all the things you could've pointed out you point out that he wasn't married at the time. Married or not they were in a relationship leading to marriage (that sounds pretty serious to me I don't know about you). It's almost as if you're diminishing the severity of his actions. Well he wasn't actually married so... That doesn't even matter. Bottomline is he stepped out on his partner (which by the way just so happened to be his soon to be bride carrying his child). Doesn't matter what title she carried. Maybe before you reply to someone's comment you should think about if what is coming out of your mouth is even worth mentioning. Just a thought.

There's no substance to that claim. Magic Johnson is a multi-millionaire whose always been able to afford the best medical treatment, and the quality of that treatment has advanced a great deal since the early '90s.

I'm 38 & grew up thinking HIV or AIDS was an overall death sentence. That was until 2014 when an extremely close family member of mine was diagnosed due to being sexually irresponsible. My father in law passed away from HIV related pneumonia as well. He sadly didn't learn of his diagnosis till it started physically affecting him & by then it was too late for the meds to stop the damage. He passed 6 months before I met my husband.
