Magic johnson & karl malone were two men you didn’t see having beef. during the young 1990’s, most people knew little about the HIV virus and it’s contract-ability in sports. Karl Malone was a perfect example of this ignorance when he refused to play in games against Magic Johnson who had just a year earlier announced to the world his hiv status. Malone’s comments, whispers around the NBA and an open wound during a recent pre season forced Magic to pull out of his comeback season with the lakers.

Though i agree that Malone is behaving like a caveman when looking back today but you have to consider the era this took place in. Before Magic announced, we only had a few terrifying public cases of AIDS. we had all just watched Rock Hudson whither away and die. Same w liberaci. But freshest on the mind was occurring simultaneously, Freddie Mercury had just died a horrifically public death (purposely public).
We all thought Magic was a goner. Fans, teammates, lakers front office… Magic defied the rules again and look at him today.
Magic isn’t given enough credit for the awareness he brought to that plague. He showed the world that anything is possible.

It isn't a crime nor battling inner demons to be infected with a killer virus, especially if a person gets infected through no fault of their own. I'm not saying that Magic Johnson was not responsible for getting infected. I believe he admitted that his promiscuous lifestyle led to his infection. My point was their are people who were infected through no fault of their own, and they should not be compared as equivalent to statutory rapists.

Magic is such a class act. Love this guy. One of the best. Top 3 for sure. This is coming from a Celtics fan. I mean other than him beating us in the finals a couple times you have to love this guy. Great attitude and high spirits even when cut down in the prime of his basketball career. I do understand concern from other players and I’m quite sure it wasn’t personal. I’m am glad he was able to not only play in the all star game with an incredible performance, on the dream team (best USA BB team ever and it’s not close), and return for another year. His numbers were solid. 4 year absence, HIV, 27 llbs heavier, and a lil slower yet he put up good numbers. Love ya #32!
It’s a downright tragedy we didn’t get to see magic after he contracted the virus.
If we had known the HIV/AIDS virus, what we know today. Magic could have played for another 5 years. Those who were born after 85, we were misfortune to witness one of the great players during that time. Yes, I was born in 1986 and heard about Magic on television, but the moment I finally get to witness his playing around the 1990-91 season. It was over after Magic announced he had HIV. It really crushed me.

It was a different time. Everyone was talking about AIDS back then. People weren't as educated about transmission as now.o Magic was probably the first celeb to open up about his HIV+ status. I don't know if they had a personal beef. But, the vast majority of people probably would have felt the same way back then, whether they said it or not. Maybe he was being a jerk, I don't know. But, it's also possible he was just being honest. Truth hurts sometimes. Malone didn't say it in a viscous way.
