The scene when the Black woman threw the ball was to note that the league was segregated. There were two women who played in the Negro League. I met one of them, Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, at the Negro League Shop in MD years ago.

I see so many people commenting on reactions to A League of Their Own saying that Dottie dropped the ball on purpose. I've always disagreed so I'm glad to see Geena feels the same! Dottie made a point of telling Ellen Sue to throw high, fast balls because Kit had a history of missing them. She was definitely trying to help the Peaches win. Kit just had something to prove and all that fire built up in her, so she massacred that ball and then tackled Dottie so hard that she dropped the ball. She wanted that win!

    • @fishbone8703

She clearly dropped the ball on purpose. They showed TWO scenes to support this. 1) She held on to the ball when a larger woman ran her down. 2) She witnessed how Kitt was falling apart in the dugout. That was the purpose for showing those scenes. It doesn't take from her character at all. My sister would come before my team any day, especially knowing she's always felt like nothing.
They actually show THREE scenes.....when Dottie tells her grandson to give his little brother a chance sometimes. She dropped the ball on purpose.

I'm a makeup artist by profession, but I'm so glad they did not use old age makeup on Madonna and Gene Davis and everybody. I'm glad that they cast older actresses for the reunion scenes. Old age makeup is one of THE most difficult things to do really well and believably- and with that number of actresses who would need it, and the budget of this film, it would probably have not been as good as it could have been, and it would pull you right out of the movie- the feeling of actual time having passed, how much people change with age.. The actresses they did cast were SO spot-on perfect! The casting director should have won an award just for that. You could immediately tell who was who. Obviously, they gave us clues in the script as well, but everybody looked believable. Dottie standing next to her younger-self photograph: there is no doubt that that young woman grew into that older woman. They really did a tremendous job with that casting!!

Baseball and softball are played by the same rules, but softball uses a larger ball that hurts less when you get hit with it. It's common for girls and casual players (for example, teams from churches or businesses just looking to play recreationally, not aspiring athletes) to play softball as opposed to baseball. Dottie and Kit were playing softball in the beginning for the for the team from the dairy their parents own.

The only thing that gets to me about it is how Kit never really gets her comeuppance. It’s so unsatisfying!
She basically gets rewarded in the end for being a spiteful, self absorbed, jealous, inconsiderate, tantrum throwing shrew. I hate it! There weren’t any consequences for her disgusting/hateful behavior.
At no point did she ever show any love or compassion towards her own sister and the real problems she was going through.

OK just finished it. I really relate to it feeling nostalgic - it's a story that, despite not happening to us personally, is still deeply relevant to many of us. Some of that is in the power of the incredible storytelling of this movie, and some because it's telling the real stories of real people and we can't escape the ways in which history continues to impact us all in a variety of ways we struggle to describe, even as it feels vital that we find some way to communicate what we feel inside so that we feel less alone.
Sigh, it's after midnight and I worry I'm rambling. I appreciate you sharing your time with us. I love this film and really enjoyed y'all's reaction to it. I highly recommend the Amazon reboot to anyone reading this. And to those same people: you are loved and valued and wanted

While it’s obviously left for the viewer to decide, I’m in the Dottie-dropped-the-ball-on-purpose camp. They open the movie with her effectively telling her elder grandson to take it easy on his little brother. And they make a point of showing Dottie holding on after a collision at the plate. I think Dottie knew it meant far more to her sister than it did to her, so she let her win in a way that wouldn’t undermine her sister’s accomplishment.

    • @groujo1
      @groujo1 2 місяці тому

@@MotoNomad350 Agreed: it fits with the themes, and Dottie does seem to wish she had given Kit more room to flourish. But it doesn't fit with Dottie's , imho. She was a real ballplayer who respected the game and wanted to win. She drove hundreds of miles to return to the final game, and she told Betty to pitch Kit high. And you can see it on her face while Kit is running the bases: she's not rooting Kit on. So if she decided to drop the ball intentionally, it was at the very last second. And I'd say if that was the intention of the story to have that be the crucial choice, it's filmed strangely. They could have shown Dottie smiling while doing it or something. I think they chose not to do that because it would feel condescending, rather than loving. And that's exactly why I don't choose not to interpret it that way.

Great movie that I watch all the time. That said, Madonna couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. In this movie she gets away with playing herself because the character was basically her, but lines like "You ain't shuttin me down" were so over-acted and so badly delivered I never know whether to cringe or burst out laughing.

All of the actresses in the movie really had to already have proven baseball/softball experience. Apparently a lot of actresses wanted to be in this movie and tried out for it but skill was also a necessity to be in this film.

I think you meant “Madonna WAS hot 🔥”. Cause these days…Yikes!
On Easter I pulled up a current pic of her to show my mom and husband how psychotically she destroyed her face and my toddler niece started bawling. If aliens showed up and saw her they’d immediately run back to Melmac screaming.
You’ve gotta be severely mentally ill to purposely do that to yourself.

As expected, I'm really enjoying this reaction at the halfway point! Recently, I passed on a reaction to this film, thinking, "Next time I'm in the mood for a reaction to A League of Their Own, I can always search for that flickaroo and pick whichever channel's reacting to it." Then it showed up on your channel, and I said "HOORAY, I'm down!" (Along with You, Me, & the Movies and Andelain, your reaction channel ranks at the tippity top for me! Your reactions are always fantastic!)
Also: "Why do you gotta' be so good?" is the wrong question. Kit, addlepated from living in her sister's shadow, is the embodiment of sport: striving her hardest, past reason, with a chip on her shoulder and everything to prove. Dottie, the Michael Jordan of her sport, has nothing to prove. She's amazingly talented and a class act all the way, a wonderful human being. To me, the question Kit needs to be asking *herself* is, "How good can *I* be -- and when am I ever going to just be happy for my sister and congratulate her on being such a badass?"

The relationship between Tom Hanks and Geen Davis is so great because they didn't try to make it some kind of love triangle - it's strictly platonic and he has respect for her as a player and as a person.

Good story, but the only things in there that actually happened were that the players did go to charm school, and that they wore those awful uniforms. But women's baseball was popular from the very first. They were never in danger of being shut down, and the league lasted through the 1953 season. There were more and more major-league games on television, and for awhile, small-town teams suffered.
The bruise on a player's hip that looked so horrible wasn't makeup. That was real. The actress said it took a year to heal completely.

$75 in 1943 is the equivalent of about what $1,300 - $1,400 is in 2024 which ain't nothing nowadays because of inflation and a imploding economy but was considered more than great in those times.

I don't feel sorry for Kit. Kit is not a victim of anything. Kit is envious of Dottie. So much so that she distorts reality to suit her narrative. Kit is in a one-sided sibling rivalry with Dottie. Kit over exaggerates or lies about how people view & compare her to Dottie. Dottie even called her out on it at the beginning of the movie. Kit uses emotional black mail to manipulate Dottie into feeling guilty about everything & nothing. When the emotional black mail fails, she throws a tantrum & angrily lashes out. Regarding Kit's skill, she has it. We don't know if her skill is actually less or equal to Dottie's because she spends the entire movie, with exception to the baseball tryouts, mimicking Dottie's technique. Kit is a very insecure & immature young woman with low self-esteem. Kit placed herself in Dottie's shadow. No one put her
