My take is that Sarah is entering the labyrinth of her mind to rescue her inner child after the trauma of her parents divorce and isolation from having no friends. All the characters carry life lessons from self reflection that she learns along the way that are needed to recover her inner child. Hoggle begins as untrustworthy and self-serving but gradually becomes a loyal friend. Sarah learns the importance of trusting others and the value of genuine friendship, despite initial appearances and actions. Ludo, with his imposing size and gentle nature, teaches Sarah about inner strength combined with kindness. He shows that true strength lies in being gentle and compassionate, even when you appear strong and formidable. Sir Didymus, with his unwavering bravery and loyalty despite his small stature, represents the courage to face one’s fears and the importance of loyalty. Sarah learns that bravery is not the absence of fear, but the determination to move forward despite it. The Junk Lady, who tries to burden Sarah with her old possessions, symbolizes the weight of clinging to the past and material attachments. Sarah learns the importance of letting go of these burdens to move forward in her journey. The Worm, who gives Sarah directions early in the labyrinth, teaches her that things are not always what they seem. His directions lead her to discover hidden paths and possibilities, illustrating the idea that different perspectives can reveal new opportunities. The Fireys, with their chaotic energy and attempts to distract Sarah with their games, symbolize the distractions and temptations that can lead one astray. Sarah learns the importance of staying focused on her goals and not being sidetracked by meaningless diversions. The Wiseman offers cryptic yet insightful advice, representing the value of wisdom and seeking guidance. Sarah learns that sometimes, wisdom comes in unexpected forms, that there has to be an equal exchange to receive it, and listening to the advice of others can provide clarity on her journey. The Helping Hands offer Sarah a choice of direction, symbolizing the importance of making decisions and taking control of one’s path. Sarah learns that she has the power to choose her direction and shape her own destiny. Jareth represents the seductive nature of illusions and the power they can have over us. He tries to manipulate Sarah with illusions and temptations. Sarah learns to see through these illusions, understanding that true power comes from within and not from external validation or control... Biggest comment I've ever posted LOL, as you can tell I love this movie!
I have seen this movie countless times since I was a kid. Most watched have just been casual viewing. Mostly something nostalgic to view or hear while cooking or cleaning. As I grew older I realized this was maybe her fantasy but NEVER have I ever thought about it to this depth. WOW you have opened my mind. Thank you for this breakdown.
The baby, Toby Froud, is the son of renowned character designer Brian Froud, who did the character designs for this movie. He has grown up to become a puppet designer and puppeteer, as well as a film maker. He has said that this movie had a profound affect on him even though he was too young to remember being in it. He was even the design supervisor for the 2019 series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. It's like things came full circle.
interesting story: Hoggle had it worst after the film, So when filming was over all the puppets were specially shipped by airplane. However, the one containing Hoggle vanished. Years later the suitcase found its way to a place that's like a thrift store / auction where you can buy unclaimed suitcases. one person bought it, opened it up and screamed bloody murder. Hoggle was in side, the puppet had decayed and literally looked like a dead body. The Happy ending though. He was restored and repaired with updated material that wouldn't decaye so easily or react to heat as his old skin, and parts did. He is now On display 100 percent in best condition in a small recreated scene from the film in that exact suitcase thrift auction place.
One of the Firies was Jamaican dancer/singer Danny-John Jules. So yes, actual Jamaican. Best reaction I've ever seen of Labyrinth, thank you, ladies. VH.
The goblins are previous kids, and the bag ladies are probably the previous girls who failed the Labyrinth. They were trying to make her into one of them when she thought she was back in her room. Piling everything on her back. Creepy stuff...
0:31:57 "Why is the goblin King so sad?" Remember, at the beginning of the movie, when she said the Goblin King would take her brother, she also said he would fall in love with her. Love is scary and amazing ;) At the end she's grown up, she has a support system of magical friends, and the magical, older man who is in love with her, knows she's far too young, his heart is her happiness so he flies away...
26:04 I think the Junk Lady is the most interesting metaphorical character in any kid's movie. She tells Sara to forget her goals, then literally starts to stack her old possessions on her back. She is trying to make her into another Junk Lady.
Another great fantasy film is “The Dark Crystal” (1982), featuring the puppetry of the great Jim Henson and Frank Oz (Sesame Street and the Muppets). Magnificent story and creatures!
This came out the year i was born. My mom was a HUGE David Bowie fan and i guess we would watch it when i was really little. Although, i dont remember that. My first memory of watching it was when I was 5 and it was one of my favorite movies. This, The Neverending Story, Ferngully, and others. Throughout my childhood I broke a few VHS tapes because of how often I watched it and rewound it and watched again. Lol. I still know every single line by heart. I could perform it as a one woman play. 😂😂😂😂😂
So happy you guys picked up on a few of the themes. This movie can be pretty confusing or seem a bit convoluted unless you watch it with all the themes in mind, then it all falls into place. Love this and wish we had more modern examples of this genre.
There are many layers, many lessons, many opportunities for re-watching and finding something new. I love this film. The creativity of Jim Henson and his whole team (including his son Brian: the voice of Hoggle, among many other things), the artistic direction of Brian Froud and his wife Wendy, and the contribution of their son Toby- who played little Toby, the baby. Having been exposed to his parents' fantastic creations since birth, he LOVED all of the goblins and creatures. (When he's sad and crying, they kept him up past his nap time. But it's okay, because mom and dad were right there to comfort him.) Writer Terry Gilliam (member of Monty Python; you may recognize some of his humor from having watched "Monty Python and the Holy Grail") added humor and whimsy to the script. And of course David Bowie and young Jennifer Connelly. When Jim Henson and Brian Froud were looking for another project to do together after "The Dark Crystal" (which you should totally check out!), they were thinking about coming-of-age stories, Alice in Wonderland, the Wizard of Oz, stuff like that. Jim had children. Brian was a new dad. The ideas of responsibility, selflessness, dealing with a world that is often "not fair." Dealing with adolescence and budding sexuality while still being young and holding onto childhood influenced the decision to cast a rock star as the Goblin King. Many were considered; Bowie won out- which I think was the best decision. He had that perfect balance of menace, allure, sexuality, aloofness, androgyny, masculinity, so many seemingly conflicting attributes. And he fully embraced the humor and whimsy, while never nodding or winking to the camera; he simply WAS the Goblin King. (the one winking line may have been, "He has my eyes," referring to the fact that Bowie's eyes do not match; an accident in his youth made one pupil permanently dilated, leading to him looking like he has to different colored eyes.) If you look in Sarah's room, you will see stuffed animals, figurines, books, posters, photos, that all reference fantasy worlds and stories, and can be found in the Labyrinth. Now- whether the Labyrinth was all just a dream, or whether it is a real place, is left open to interpretation. I've heard convincing arguments both ways, and I enjoy the ambiguity (which is over there, in the box).
Initially, David Bowie couldn't do the hand motions when he was playing around with the sphere, so they had an expert do it for him by simply crouching behind his back and then pretend his arms were Bowie's instead. Initially, Jim Henson wanted to cast Sting from The Police for the role of Jareth, but his daughter convinced him to cast Bowie instead, partly because she was a fan.
Toby is the son of Brian Froud, the conceptual designer of this film. He's a puppeteer himself now too! I love you guys. I'm having a great time rewatching these classics with you and getting your fresh perspectives.
I love this movie and watch it at least once a year. It’s a story about that uncomfortable time of life when you’re growing up, but still a child. It’s not a coincidence that the goblin king is so tragic romantic/creepy/scary/childish. I saw this movie when it came out in cinemas and I’m pretty sure it’s why I’m a creative person today and this is one of the first movies where the girl was the protagonist. That was a huge deal. Great reaction. You’re great!❤
I was 6 when this came out. I definitely wasn't scared by it. I did however develop a massive crush on David Bowie! To this day he is so SEXY in this role!
They originally had a different name for Toby, but they couldn't get the baby actor to respond to it, so they finally decided that it would be easier to just change the baby character's name to match the baby actor's name. I was 13 when this movie came out, and I liked it, but my then-nine-year-old brother found it to be traumatizing. It way too "creepy" for him. Today I remember "Labyrinth" along with "The Neverending Story" as the two great coming of age adventures of the 1980's.

Hello ladies. Another film similar to this is The Dark Crystal. You wear the Thrasher shirt, you may like the Thrasher skateboard movie. There's also Gleaming the Cube.
i just found your channel through this movie and im loving it. the way you understand all the messages are exactly how i see it today. as a teen everyone was in love with jared but as an adult we just understand that all we have forever is ourselves and friends that come in and out in life. (i really enjoy your reaction because a lot of people pass over all the important things that this movie show us and only see the puppets and the old special effects. you really understood it)
Let's say this is a film that helps you grow up and take responsibility for yourself, it's true it has a lot of symbolism... the fact that a certain balance is needed as you also said. Then at the end when she says that she needs all of them, it's like when you grow up and choose to live in a certain way, what kind of person you want to be, you don't necessarily have to stop dreaming. If you watch the neverending story there are similar messages about fighting for your dreams and that if you don't believe in anything you also lose the reason why you fight.

There are some small hard to notice details, especially in her bedroom, that there was some kind of affair or abuse by a person who resembles Bowie's character. The nature of how the goblin king talks to her and how he says things like he'll be a slave as long as she obeys him alludes to the fact that she had a inappropriate relationship with an older man. Her story can be seen as a metaphor for her escaping an abusive relationship and growing up.
Jennifer Connolly was 14 at the time of filming. David Bowie said some of their scenes together were awkward, because Jareth was basically trying to seduce her.
If you want to see something scary google found Hoggle puppet. Hoggle was stored in a suitcase and lost in transit until a couple of years ago. He didn't fair well.

Who recommended this? There’s better movies from that era. Consider 1.) The Good Son 2.) The Hand That Rocks The Cradle. For modern movies three I’m waiting for y’all to review: 1.) Tenet (starting Denzel’s son in an excellent performance) 2.) Crimson Tide 3.) The Walk (you won’t believe that it actually happened AND THE MAN IS STILL ALIVE) but the crazy bastard FILMED IT so it’s not a lie it’s really all true not just based on a true story). I meant to only put three but I can’t resist. The Pursuit of Happyness. I lost a lot of respect for Will Smith after humiliating Chris Rock but this is his finest movie, one of the most heartbreaking movies of all time as well as one of the greatest movies of all time (in my opinion)).

Can you imagine how viral that unboxing would have went if they recorded it?
They were actually in the process of a sequel with Bowie and Connelly, but then Bowie became terminally ill.
That’s not a “fun” fact. It’s a sad fact, slightly ameliorated by the ending. It would be better if you just called it “interesting trivia”.

Labyrinth is a classic movie.
