Wrath has made a huge impression on me now that I have been playing it for a while, and i'm really stating to see why back in 2008 it saw WoW's peak subscriber count.
It turns out letting anyone do anything, fast catch up mechanics and fun class design is a recipe for success.

I disagree. For me, classic was special because of all my fond memories of it. Classic is an old game, with a thoroughly cracked meta that often crosses the line from cracked to abused. Its PvP and raid mechanics are imbalanced and simplistic. All that said, its a charming game that I love cause I grew up with it, not because its a cutting edge game for competitive play.

Wrath was the bomb for several reasons, mainly because the original Wintergrasp had no limit on how many could enter. You could be in a battle of 400 v 400 or even more, bringing the problem of "Winterlag". Because there was no limit, anybody could join at any time and everyone had apps and timers that reminded them when it was time to log in from work home or school. It was an INSANE amount of fun! Even when they capped the numbers you could still fly over the mountain and parachute down into the battle, allowing a strat where 25 people could just float down into the enemy controlled fort and rip it to shreds from the inside. When Blizz took that all away, and took away our cross-spec talent tree, their membership plummeted from an estimated 15.6 million unique subs down to 9 million. It felt like corporate sabotage but it was just the stick-up-the-ass Fun Killers roaming the halls at Blizzard that did this to us. For the second half of Wrath at least, I was the #3 rated tank in the game, and Blizz paid homage to my character with Zoog Zaga ZugZug NPCs and an average of 225 player-named Zoog clones per server. I was really on top of the dogpile back then lol, just an old fart now but thinking of coming back to relive some memories.

@@styxzero1675 I do agree with this, Wrath is Retail lite. The WoW decline actually started soon after the start of Wrath, which you can blame on Wrath being a different game to TBC and Vanilla, being easier, faster and less social which made people quit. ICC was great for a number of weeks and then the introduced the 'strenth of wrynn/hellscream's warsong', and pretty much killed the fun of that raid. Hardcore guild after hardcore guild began calling it quits as this nerf was the final straw for a great many. By the end of WotLK the raiding guild population was decimated. Many came back at the beginning of Cata hoping Blizzard would learn to stop breaking/nerfing their own game. They didn't. Cata gets the credit for killing WoW, but most of what caused the mass exodus was introduced in WotLK. That which wasn't (The changing/nerfing of Azeroth) had begun in patch 2.3 of BC and Blizzard just tripled down on that bad idea by destroying much of what made everyone fall in love with WoW to begin with: vanilla Azeroth.

wrath is a really nice Sweet spot in the way the game is designed. At least 75% of it was the reason wow wrath was so successful. That 75% was removed over time.
Dungeons were about being fun and loot heavy with versatile rewards and a stepping stool into the more challenging Raids.
one of the best ways for horizontal design for an mmo is creating new characters and wrath does the best at convincing people to play a new class.

The game just feels like it values your time more. I'm now at a point where I'm spending my time in the game getting achievements and engaging with the world a lot more. Wrath had the perfect balance between masochism and convenience. It had improved so many small things that were just a pain in TBC and Classic without making everything quite One-click-boring like the later expansions.
Plus, you had an endboss that mattered! Every Warcraft player knew Arthas, he was highly relevant to the entire story of the franchise and facing him in ICC felt like true ENDGAME. Compare that to Shadowlands... who tf is the Jailer? Never heard of him...
And another thing I loved about Wrath was that the classes felt different from each other. I can only talk about the healer side but playing a Disc priest or a Holy Pala played so much differently than a Shaman or Druid. For me, it really took the fun out of playing Holy Pala when they introduced a group heal in Cata. I don't need a group heal, I got 1s Flash of Lights and a Beacon. I don't want to smash my nose on the Lighg of Dawn button, I want to have to choose which group member I Flash of Light first, then second and so on by judging who might get damage next, because that feels like my choice and skill in judgement still matters.

I agree a lot with the "classes felt different from each other" part.
You can even make the argument that on both tbc and vanila it was that way, but the difference maker was the viability of every class/spec instead of the features that every single one of them had. Now almost every spec is well received and competent in what it is intended to do and that's a win to me. The only meme spec left is Holy Priest but aside of that even feral druids are happy.
The thing that i can't understand is how a group of people are trashtalking wotlk while referencing Cataclysm as a good expansion that made wow hard again while truth be said... Cata was easy af until the last raids. It was the start of (like you said) every class can do everything. Paladins could heal on aoe, Mages had heroism/bloodlust... even LFR difficulty was introduced! I don't understand what "difficulty" means to wow playerbase anymore: hard mechanics or time consuming tasks? Because nor TBC nor vanila were hard, aside from being expansions with a lot of attuning to do before raiding and a somewhat crude solo-leveling experience. Obviously there was a few "difficult" bosses here and there, but just a few and that's all (maybe Illidan and some bosses of AQ?).
I feel that one does not play WoW expecting difficulty. If anyone wants to do challenge runs, there they go but WoW is not hard unless you are in retail playing high Mythics with suboptimal builds/gear, but that's just my opinion.
I'm having a blast playing feral/resto druid rn. Finally our class have four completely viable specs 😊

For me, I think I loved TBC for nostalgic reaaons more even though I finished all Wrath content up to Heroic ICC25. Wrath was honestly amazing. I really want to get my cousin into it. He watched me play back in the day and hated it since I spent so much time on my computer and never wanted to play Counter Strike or Dota. Hes been trying some bad MMOs and I told him to try wow. If he does, I will play Druid so I can heal and tank haha.
Back in the day, for me, Wrath was just more focused. Classes had more focus. The balance was less questionable. The community and the min max wasnt as bad as it got later. I rolled on a brand new server at the time of release and everyone was racing to 80, us and the other top 3 guilds were racing like crazy for servers first. It was awesome

I actually liked the theming of TBC (I like the weird space-fantasy feel, hough I know a lot of people didn't), but Wrath is definitely a step up in terms of gameplay and quality of life changes. It's a good balance between the oldschool feel and quality of life improvements, and it's also has some of the best raids in the game (OK, it has Ulduar, but Ulduar is REALLY good). Plus, they got rid of attunements which was one of the biggest issues I had with TBC. It was also the expansion where I could first do actual end-game raiding (I started playing late in vanilla and for most of TBC I was too busy with real world stuff to dedicate enough time to raiding), so I have a lot of nostalgia for it. It's not perfect: a lot of the non-Ulduar raids, especially ToC, are kind of meh, and I feel they made heroic dungeons too easy to the point where there's no point in there even being non-heroic lv.80 dungeons (I liked that there was some actually challenging 5-man content in TBC, especially since I didn't have time to raid but still wanted to do something that felt like a challenge), but overall it's probably the best expansion they've ever done.

Lots of quest markers missing and a few odd bugs like mobs having the wrong tags on them: One quest had me killing two kinds of mobs, killed 5/5 of one and the other kept saying 0/5 so I kept killing... before realizing it had another mob's name on it. That's why the count wasn't going up, wrong mob.

With the old tool your activate it and then wait and eventually you'll get into a heroic, with your current implementation unless people are actively listed they won't be in the tool.

I also really like TBC, which I'm sure so many others do too, so it was super confusing to me that blizzard got rid of that version of the game completely, when they kept vanilla classic servers. I'm enjoying wrath quite a bit, but there's still cons that get in the way of it being the perfect wow expansion:
    1. Overflooded with gear from quests and dungeons. Feels like mom is shoving cupcakes down my throat every hour. Gear progression is just simply terrible, in leveling and in dungeons.
    2. Questing pace is fine, but the ease of questing is ridiculous. I only died three times to mobs from 70-80, and all 3 were elite group quests that I was soloing in ZulDrak or Icecrown. I would rather the quests offer twice as much XP and die while questing than it be a crazy pushover. It's just not engaging.
    3. Dungeons are too quick to the point where it feels like Blizz designed them to be thought of as a nuisance that you need to get over with quickly. I'd rather have dungeons be twice as long and drop twice the badges then do twice as many dungeons for the same rewards.
Of course, these changes all started in TBC, but WOTLK took them to a wonky level, imo. Point 3 above would be too much to change, but it would've been nice if Blizz tackled 1 & 2 above.

  • @Datavore

I have been struggling with Wrath.
I really don't like the quest design. I want to pick up a dozen quests, run around a zone for a while, then go back to town and turn in like 5-8 things at once. I also want those quests to feel meaningful, like I can really feel a boost in xp or like I finished an area after each. Wrath quest design forces me to go back to the quest hub after every 1-3 quests done, then back to....the same area, again, 5-6 times. I -hate- this.
Arcane mages are also immersion-breakingly bugged. When you fire Arcane Missiles off an Arcane Barrage proc, and you take melee hits, you lose 2-3 of the missiles, even with 5/5 Arcane Stability. This is endlessly frustrating to play around, to the point that I'm leveling a different character so I don't have to keep thinking about it.

    • @cattysplat
      @cattysplat Рік тому

That is a return to Vanilla style questing with focus on story. TBC spoiled you with questhubs dump a dozen quests on you at once where you circled the hub killing everything then returning like a bot, obnoxiously easy and grindy. The problem is Wrath zones are huge and without flying, returning to town takes too long, it's vastly improved with flying.

    • @Datavore
      @Datavore Рік тому

      @@cattysplat With respect
In vanilla, when I go to the Crossroads for the first time, I get many quests. I can wander through the barrens in a bunch of different ways. I tend to not go back to town until bags are full or many quests are done, or both. And very few of the follow ups send me to exactly the same area.
Even in a less dense zone, like Thousand Needles, I end up making 2-3 'laps' through the zone. In each lap, I do 5-6 quests and go all over the place. And I can optimize it a bit; if I set things up right, I can for example do all the Darkcloud Pinnacle quests at the same time, saving me return trips.
The questing I've done in Wrath so far isn't vanilla style. It's Cataclysm style.

Fun fact: the term Welfare Epics actually started in TBC and talking about PvP gear. Which, in classic, sort of became the meta and no-one was remotely bothered by it.

However I also kind of appreciate what the game has become since then...for me m+ is just the best thing ever added to the game since it is challenging content and long lasting progression whenever I want it. Once you cleared your raids on day one on reset you char feels kinda dead with nothing meaningful to do. Sure you can spam alts...but that is not everyones cup of tea

Wrath is the first time I have actually kept playing the game after the absolutely slugging grind to max since original Classic launch, Classic burnout was fucked due to dungeon levelling for literally 2 weeks, TBC a a week plus a week of heroics for no raid spot made me instantly quit. This time around in Wrath I've managed to keep in the game, and I don't plan to quit any time soon.

Wotlk was/is essentially world of warcraft 2. The second time around especially it feels like a sequel more than an expansion. TBC felt like an expansion meant for dedicated players simply because in hindsight blizz didn't know that the game would continue to grow. Wotlk is the best and boy am I glad to have another go

I played the original release of Wrath of the Lich King and now the classic version. I am thoroughly enjoying the second time around to main a different class and go for things that I didn't back then. Some aspects that are new products from Blizzard however are dampening things. Though also going for the hard mode dwarf only Naxxramas runs. Cleared all content phase 1 as an all dwarf raid.

Personally i have very mixed feelings about wrath. As a person which never played it before, and only started my journey in 2019 with classic wow releasing, i must say that qol changes and overall class balance and gameplay are great and engaging, zones are very nice, quests plentiful with choice of how and where you wanna level and dungeons quite easy, enjoyable and not too long(looking at you brd). Having done all 10 man raids and on the way to do all 25 mans, i have to say they are on the easy side, and rly facerolly, not much thinking to besides your standard rotation, and moving away from shit. Vehicle combat is propably most tragic thing in this expansion, way too much of it, especially in raids/dungeons, im fine with quests having 2-3 per zone, afterall you do them only once so why not.
Going to the ugly tho, previously mentioned raid diffculty as well as heroic difficulty, it gets boring after some time, too much loot as much as most ppl think its a good thing, i say its bad thing for the game, already some of ppl i know went into raid logging mode and we arent even 1 month past release, they maxed proffesions, got all prebis in 3-4 "world tours" and have enoug gold for all the needs for next 2 years of expansion. Personally, i dont enjoy this version of the game although it seems like it would be superion than classic. I think that if you wanna have best of both world(old nostalgia feeling with qol improvments you arent getting either), to me i rather play retail than wrath if i want qol gameplay+difficult gameplay or vanilla wow if i crave for "nostalgia" of the old game design. All of my "rant" here is obv personal view, and propably nowhere close to what most of current wrath classic players think, but as a person who has fresh view of the game, i rly had most fun in the classic version of the game even tho it was tedious and grindy it had some life in it, ppl i met were glad to play the game and now whatever i do in game, i feel like ppl do it just to gain or get something and never have to do it again, almost like retail is...kinda funny, that ppl run to classic for the old nostalgia experience and they ended up in the same place...just with the theme of wrath of the lich king instead of shadowlands...i propably gonna play vanilla private server when it releases soon

Contrary to most people I actually got mixed feelings about Wrath this far. I like the aesthetics of Northrend, but oh god the vehicle combat which they put everywhere is so clunky, poorly designed and boring. The never ending vehicle combat alone partly ruined the questing experience for me, due to how annoying and just unfun it was to play. The non vehicle combat quests were alright though.
Another problem for me has been the class design. My class and specc in particular, enhancement shaman, changed so much I can barely recognize my class just from a month ago. I liked the pace of the TBC enhancement, I had 3-4 spells to use regularly or occasionally, totems to drop, timer to look out for when totemtwisting and also weapon syncing. In Wotlk I rather feel I'm playing some whack-a-mole game with 10 spells I have to actively use and prioritise on top of everything from TBC, well aside from totemtwisting. I don't know if it's my age getting to me, but I honestly don't feel like I need a game of stressful whack-a-mole with split second decisions to be made constantly for several hours after a day at work. The slower pace in TBC felt better to me and made playing WoW feel more of relaxation than something stressful, which I just don't need more of in my life.

I can't really explain it: overall I certainly had the most fun during the WotLK expansion, but I still have to say that Vanilla was my favorite time in WoW. Even though the gameplay was objectively worse in many ways, just the experience of how new and exciting everything was, and being one of the (relatively) few people there discovering it for the first time can never be replicated.
The only real problem is that this was the expansion that (towards the end when everyone was very geared) started the horrible trend of being able to pull entire halls of dungeons and AoE the entire thing down in minutes, rather than having to ever pay attention to anything.
Side note: No, I don't remember being able to AFK during the Dalaran tour. I remember having to follow the whole thing because you would fail if the guide walked too far away.

This was one of the things I liked most about the start of Cata was the pre nerfed heroics... it was a shame they caved and nerfed it since they made the right decision by increasing the difficulty.
