    Can we also talk about how men want a girl who likes the same things they like but once they find one who is truly into cars/sports/fitness they’re so quick to tear them down acting like women can’t realistically understand those topics like men do. They want a man to the core lmao

      Omg ikr, I saw a TikTok abt a girl talking abt stocks and the comments were filled with men saying stuff like “I’d be heartbroken if my girl knew this much abt stocks” insinuating that the only way a woman can know anything abt the stock market is through a past ex, but then they put women down for “being dumb” and apparently not knowing anything abt such topics, it’s so stupid.

    Interesting point about Timothee, two of his most famous acting jobs have been written and directed by a woman. Little Women and Lady Bird were written and directed by Greta Gerwig. the whole pick me girl thing has always driven me crazy, because in my mind it all stemmed from the fact that women were always made fun of for liking the things they liked (whether it was stereotypical "girly things" or more "boy things"). no matter what women like, they get made fun of for it. and constantly trying to "prove" themselves. exhausting. now women are coming up and being proud of what they like and do, and the boys cant cope. any girl reading this, do what you like, be kind, and embrace your power. you're way cooler than the bigots in the back!

    • @aabracadavra
      @aabracadavra 2 роки тому +65

      I partly agree with your analysis. But I think this phenomenon is far more convoluted. First off, what is femininity? How much of it is nature and how much is social conditioning. Characteristics such as "pretty, soft, fragile" are often times associated with femininity, and yet when you actually consider the intrinsically and biologically female characteristics such as the ability to create and birth humans, menstruation, the physiology of the female brain and its functions, nothing about it really is exclusively fragile, soft, pretty. Childbearing is not defined by frailty. It’s transformative, aggressive and spiritual. Having to go trough the symptoms of having your uterus lining breaking down, bleeding and being in pain every month does not require softness, it requires strength and resilience. Raising a human also requires cognitive complexity, mental strength, discipline and a deep sensitivity to subtle cues, the ability to understand human experience and psychology, and heightened emotional intelligence.
      Nature works by refining itself to reach efficiency, and such rigorous and complex tasks given to females also require granting women the ability to fulfill them. Otherwise we wouldn’t’ve survived. So those beforementioned required characteristics must be present in women. This is not to say that women show their worth by being mothers, but to try and find femininity through objective and scientific means, as opposed to ideological. Because as it stands, the narrative we hear doesn’t seem to fit reality. Prettiness is not intrinsically feminine either, nor is it required exclusively of women, since physical attraction benefits both men and women. It is, however, mostly expected of women.
      I would argue that the definition of femininity currently propagated is a mockery, to put it briefly. Looking at how men react to free and independent women, I’d say it’s imperative for them that femininity is curated and presented as a set of behavioral traits which keep women “non-threatening”.
      So, I find it necessary that we examine who’s norms are we following when we decide to go against the pick-me phenomenon, in order to limit the risk of placing ourselves in another trap.

      @@canonrazi You were perfectly clear in your argumentation, and also correct since women truly are vilified and belittled no matter what they do. Your frustration is justified as well. I just find it hypocritical of them to criticize so called "feminine" behavior when it's pretty clear to me that this behavior was to some extent forced on women, by men, so they could feel comfortable in their equally fabricated portrayal of masculinity.
      I also saw it as an opportunity to raise awareness and potentially help other women escape those traps. I know it helped me. Since I was both a pick me and a "feminine" girl in my life. I'm currently in the process of becoming myself, and redefining femininity. I also know how hard it is to find yourself in media or the system as a woman, since it's heavily patriarchal and oppressive. Seeing that you found my commentary relatable makes my day. It's the least I can do.

      The thing with 'pick me girls' is more about putting other women down to appease men. Like wearing makeup is fine. Not wearing makeup is also fine. It's when girls who don't wear makeup say 'oh well I don't wear makeup because I'm all natural and don't want to deceive men with makeup.'
      Another example: girls who play sports vs girlier girls. Both are fine but if the other puts down the other for what they prefer to appease men, then it's 'pick me' behaviour.

All my life I have said that I like really tall and muscular guys, but never really felt attracted to any of the ones that I have encountered. But now, I am in college, and I have started to really like this guy who is more feminine and comfortable in his masculinity. He cares about his fashion sense, cares about keeping his living space clean and well-kept, and always goes out of his way to make me feel comfortable, and hell, his hair is longer than mine. At first, I was apprehensive to admit that I liked him, because he is not "my type." But that's the thing. He *is* my type--my actual type--and I was just saying that I liked tall muscular men because society told me to.

    I got dress coded in highschool for wearing my school soccer team sweatpants and my school tennis team sports tank top. On "spirit day". When the cheer team got to wear their uniform, tank top and sport skirt. But because I have big tits and hips, I was inappropriate. IN MY SCHOOL SPORTS UNIFORM. Explain that plz.

    I feel like Pete Davidson/Chalamet type female-gaze people are also soooo like…. Stuck in the beauty standard of white and skinny. Like it completely excludes men of color, fat men, disabled men like even the female gaze in popular media is problematic

    • @T_Cup
      @T_Cup 2 роки тому +20

      Probably because it's still intrinsically tied into patriarchy, which upholds white as the conventional beauty standard. When cinema started moving away from the typical popular white jock ideal and toward the fragile geek turned knight/superhero ideal, it really just transferred a lot of the same standards onto a different body/personality type while leading girls and women to the same conclusion about men = white is right.

      @@T_Cup I was about to say that the halyu wave, which is the korean culture boom we're having, portrays it slightly different. But then I remembered the korean beauty standards where most singers and actors till this day bleach their skin in a way just to be as close to white as possible... They've been brainwashed by hollywood as well, althought some stars are starting to rock their natural skin tone with more confidence.

      True but I think in terms of weight it is different for men who are fat. They are still seen as more desirable then fat women. For example dad bods Homer Simpson and marge. Like I know many fat men who have a skinny girlfriend and everyone roots for them. Versus when it’s a fat women with a skinny man ppl feel bad for the guy and tell him to get out of the relationship. Also aging is different men can age and women shouldn’t. Ppl are calling Selena Gomez old looking

      @@Musiyca The halyu trend might be a trickle-down affect of the male gaze, which exotifies Asian beauty. This is rooted in racism and classism because there's this old, lingering belief that Asians (typically women) live to serve their western "superiors" (typically men), particularly in maintaining their beauty. And when you look at the way Kpop artists interact with their fans, this idea is prevalent = the live-to-serve attitude and the heavy focus on maintaining looks, weight and overall appearance, even among the male artists, is thriving.
