- Collapsed rudiments is a topic that was originally studied by Jim Chapin, an American jazz drummers who defined modern drumming as we know it today. Simply put, collapsing a rudiment is closing the distance between two strokes within the pattern.
Not only does Claus Hessler give you exercises to work with, but he will also show you how to apply them in a real musical setting. Download the sheet music and follow along!

Great lesson, thanks Claus! And also thanks to Drumeo!! Love you guys!
Thanks! See you at PASIC!
Love the stay of rudaments
My favourite part of the lesson is realising the cascara pattern is part of a 5 note grouping, mind blown!
This lesson melted my mind. Totally made me rethink the old unused rudiments I learned years ago. A breath of fresh air and creativity. Thanks to Claus and Drumeo!
The way that Clauss explains and demonstrate the concept of collapsed rudiments is awesome. It is so intuitive that now, everytime I practice a rudiment, I can not avoid to think about different ways to collapse it. Great drummer, great teacher, and seems to be a very nice guy. Cheers to Claus and Drumeo for this lesson.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone with such an interesting and unique approach. I'm so impressed with Claus' fluidity and accuracy, absolutely unreal. My favorite was actually watching him play through "Inception". The way he started with an idea and expanded and "collapsed" it throughout the tune was just so refreshing.
Good grief! I had never heard of Claus before. Thank you so much for having him. He's smokin'! This one will take a minute to digest.
It was an honor to be in CLAUS HESSLER's drum clinic in Iran 3 years ago. He is a wonderful Drummer and teacher.
I love every part of this video.
Special thanks to Drumeo.
My favorite part was the solo.
This guy's playing is like a hidden pirate chest
You can't understand what's inside until you dig in.
And when you open it it's awesome.
I liked that moment when Claus collapsed the paradiddle into a flam accent. That's when the whole idea of expanding or collapsing rudiments really clicked for me. Conceptually, I saw how rudiments are connected and ideas came to better understand, practice, master, and apply the rudiments in my playing. This lesson was really exciting to me and motivated me to practice. Thanks to Claus Hessler and Drumeo for bringing him in!
CH is one of the most insanely talented drummers on the scene today!
Thanks so much - glad you like my work!
You're welcome! What drummers have inspired your playing and are worth listening to? Thanks for any recommendations.
Oh boy, with the many people I spent time listening to, these were some of the more influential: Billy Cobham, Antonio Sanchez, Tony Williams, Mark Brzezicki, Dom Famularo, Terry Bozzio ...
Thanks for the list! I know all of these names except MB, so I will look into his playing.
I have been working on this difficult (for me) 7:5 polyrhythm that I would like to share with you when I'm ready. Should I just post a video of it here?
No doubt…
That's all I want to do right there before I die. I better get started. I'm 56. lol. Utterly phenomenal Claus!
Thanks! Now off to practicing :-)
My favourite part is about 20 mins in, where Claus is explaining to Dave about comparing the Pataflafla and the Paradiddle-diddle stickings. It just turns the whole concept of rudiment practice on it's head, as I would have never put those two rudiments together or thought to associate them in that way. It just opens up a whole new world of possibilities!!
I'm down with Claus, but what he's doing isn't anything new or unique (He is very good at it, you'll never hear me say any bad about his abilities). If you want to see the real world of hybrid rudiments (it's what he's doing, hybridizing them) look into DCI drum lines or some of Scott Johnson's vic firth series (especially his Spicy Flam 4's video). Those guys just don't open a world of possibilities with rudiments, the open the universe.
cc vbj
Just plain beautiful... What amazing way of explaining.
This clearly is one of the best lessons on the drumeo channel.
Claus makes me realize how rudiments are the building blocks of great drumming, all over again. Learning to collapse these rudiments is a great way to add expression and curiosity into your drumming!
Those toms sound extremely musical!
The play through in the beginning was the most exciting part!!!
open handed playing speaks in my heart
Compare to the other lessons i saw on this channel, which each one gives you something, this one in particular WAS JUST BRILLIANT.
Wow, thanks :-)
Do i find any mail of yours to ask for some lessons?
just go through my website www.claushessler.com and contact me from there o.k.? Thanks!
@@ClausHessler I may have to do that too! For years I have wanted to be able to play open hand technique but my God it's hard when you have been leading with your right hand your whole life. The thing is I believe a lot of it is mental and just discipline. You have somehow became one of my favorite players within the first 10 minutes of watching this! 😂 and everybody I listen to can play.
More than anything, his technique over all is what seriously impresses me. The man's feet are just good as his hands! I love it. Other then that, I actually liked the little Moeller demonstration he did with the hands phasing in and out of each other. He played that so smoothy. The man's a machine!! Groove machine.
What is there to comment????? THIS IS IT. There are many great teachers out there but there is only ONE Claus Hessler. Greatest Teacher for me alive. Tell me one lesson of DRUMEO that was better than this or let me say instructive ?????? Speechless and proud to have met him more than once.
Sending my best to the country of Schüttelbrot and Magdalener :-) Thanks for your comment - appreciate it a lot!
Claus is my new most favorite Drummer. Thanks and Blessings!
Thanks so much! Aware of my books and more educational stuff? Be safe!
definitely one of the most insipiring and insightful video of entire drumeo, many thanks!
Thanks man, happy to hear you like it!
any drummer rocking the Kratos goatee is a winner in my book lol! what I've enjoyed most about this is that Claus is a real drum teacher...some people can do complicated things on drums but can not teach it to someone who isn't on the same level as them...although it's a tough subject matter with shrinking rudiments and such I feel like he did an excellent job of simplifying it...I am definitely going to be working on this stuff in my practice time!
Then there is a guy who takes it all to a higher level of maturity and intelligence. His name is Claus! At this stage of my drumming life I thought I heard it all...this stuff sounds SO fresh! Where has Claus been? Just a balanced nice together cat here...great personality...NO pretension in Claus' veins...anti-rock star BS. Rarely does seeing a player for the 1st time make me say, "This guy is one of my favorites!" This guy is one of my favorites! Good time to be alive as a drummer...ironic the music biz sucks so bad...
haha ... if I am ever in a bad mood I'll jump back to your comment :-) thanks for your kind words and feel free to share with your drumming buddies! Stay well, C
To be honest i like it all, never heard of clauss but as soon as he start playing i could see the awesomness. The Great thing is that is so simple and so advanced at the sale time is amazing.
Amazing lesson. Claus shares so much wisdom and insight here. This is best lesson on the internet hands down.
Dude is so smart. Rethought everything I thought I knew about drums
Loved the quintuplets followed by the septuplets!
I love the beat on the snare with one hand playing the rim and the other doing those ghost notes, on the first track!
the drums solo was just magic and so creative ( playing with hands) nice!!!
Holy smokes, never thought of rudiments this way. Best par by far Intro.
Thanks!
Making the familiar unfamiliar. Amazing lesson and world class artistry.
I am a right handed drummer always working on the left and it's not great,so I can appreciate what Claus is doing here. My new favorite drummer.
"Leave a comment what your favourite part of this lesson was..." Two words only: CLAUS HESSLER. I have only recently discovered the Master on YT. The first reaction was a "flight" one - not really much point in trying any more. Fortunately, the lad's attitude and materials he has produced wouldn't let me quit so I switched gears to the "fight" mode (right now I am trying to tame my hands which want to play eights on the snare and backbeat on the hihat after having switched to OHP - frankly, my bandmates do not find it as amusing as I do😁😁😁). Thanks Sir, marvellous stuff!!!
Had to pause the lesson and jump on the kit to practise the quintuplets with doubles into septuplets immediately after I saw it, such a sick beat, can't believe how comfortable the transition is once the sticking is down. Brilliant! Will be watching this one a few more times. Thanks Claus and Drumeo! Keep up the good work.
Love this cymbal setup
He can talk the talk and walk the walk- fantastic drummer I just discovered today...very cool thanks drumeo I'm mostly a double bass metal drummer blasting away lmao but every drummer needs groove too as a self taught drummer I'm always learning and always having fun I explore many styles and add to my own thing
Wow man, never seen anything of Claus before. His playing is so beautiful, relaxed, fluid! Love the part around 15 minutes when he demonstrates the paradiddle diddle in 5 with flat flams. Definitely he is a great educator, easy to follow. I'm getting behind the kit right now! Thanks Drumeo, your lessons are the best :)
this has been my favorite drumeo lesson of all time. thank you for introducing me to claus hessler, drumeo!
also, my favorite part of the lesson was the opening track he played.
Seeing top notch open handed playing with great concepts of breaking rudiments and collapsing rudiments. The next step is hybrid collapsed. Great teacher. Lg aus NRW Claus ;)
I liked the way this guy works.
That double stroke exercise was bonkers
What hi hat control with the foot! Something we all should practice. It adds so much to soloing and fills.
Ive been waiting YEARS for Claus to teach a lesson. thanks sooo much drumeo!
47:33 Listen to this drum solo with your eyes closed to appreciate how genius Claus really is.
Great idea to "collapse" the rudiments. Incorporating a specific rudiment across the kit into a specific time signature by flaming and ghosting some of the notes to shorten to your envisioned time signature is fantastic! Never thought about that approach.
Top notch drummer! How i never heard anything of him before. The solo at the end is the best i can remember in the Drumeo history, Very musical and percusive and the cymbals, bells and drum set are sounding great. I like that he has bright and dark sounds mixed when in general drummers tend to go all dark or all bright.
My favourite moment was when Claus was playing with his hands at the end, so simple but so musical :)
man the part where Claus explain how a simple single stroke triplet can become a paradiddle is amazing, truly amazing!! I always had problem in the past playing fast paradiddles because of the diddle but with this concept you actually exercise the diddle itself.. what a genius!! amazing stuff Claus well done!! :-)
He's a great teacher, musican and a real friendly guy. Take lessons from him.
I really likes the idea of substituting a 16th note for a flam tap. Thereby creating a quintuplet with a flam inside. That's really original! Sounds so great on fills with that one flam quintuplet in there!
Big thanks to Drumeo for giving these fantastic drummers the spotlight they truly deserve. Always a joy to discover new talent like this, Claus is an amazing drummer!
Klaus is a true master! A very inspiring lesson. Thank you Drumeo, i've got something to work on for the next 200 years
I love Clauss playing, sounds unusual to me. About the lesson, It's always great to check different views about rudiments to keep you on your toes.
Not even half way through and I'm pretty sure this is my favorite Drumeo lesson. Damn Clauss ! Haha
One of the best Drumeo videos to date! My favourite moment was when Claus connected the single drag tap to the inverted paradiddle!
My favourite part was the intro song, when I first saw this amazing drummer play! AMAZING!!! Great lesson, thank you Drumeo ;)
The favorite part for me was the uncollapsed double-drag rudiment. It's a totally different approach and a great tool for making the rudiments fun and creative way of coming up with stuff.
Thanks Claus
Yes! I'm always happy when i discover an awesome drummer who leads with both hands like myself. To me it can feel impossible at times, it feels good to be proven wrong.
what an incredible feel. I've followed this guy for a couple years and was really happy to see that Drumeo had him on.
My favourite part of the lesson? Had to be when he played H2O. So much energy!
What a great teacher, lesson and last but not least, drummer, thank you
+Drumeo Total control of the set with this guy! Such an unbelievable drummer with feel and finesse!
I Iove the little section at around 50:50 where Claus makes the time feel like it's "floating", or swaying around! :-)
This is the first time I've heard of him, and I must say: he's a GREAT player! :-D
All together, a mind boggling lesson but those are the best ones. Epic solo, & applying the collapsed rudi to the hihat & snare were among my fav parts. I too have been playing open handed, at first just to work on my left hand, but then switching back made me realize that my arms were in each others way, so i kept at it. Thanks!
CLAUS IS THE BEST!!! Want more videos with him!!! =)
Everything is just beautiful with Claus !! All the best from Norway
Wow never heard of him but he is fantastic. Thanks Drumeo!
awesome lesson! my favorite part was watching and finding out about a fellow open handed drummer.
One of the best lessons out there, really underrated when compared to other positions on Drumeo playlists.
thanks man :-) feel free to spread word with your drumming buddies ...
I'm totally inspired by this lesson. He's a phenomenal teacher and breaks down the subject matter in such an articulate way. This has really changed the way that I look at rudiments. The variations of the double drag tap were my personal favorites. Amazing stuff
The Best moment? I havent watched it all yet, but that opening song made me lukę "shieeeet instant like!". Awesome lesson.
solo killed me. I fell out watching that omg! Claus you dawg!
Thanks for the lesson drumeo! It was really cool learning about collapsed rudiments, but that drum solo was too good to not mention. I loved it when he switched from cowbell to bass drum to hihat with his left foot whilst doing everything else.
Great drummer and teacher, plus the bass drum sound is ORGASMIC :D
This man is so musical!!! Love it!
Thanks - feel free to spread word :-)
Claus is such a great Drummer. I saw him before at "Drums only" in Koblenz few month ago. My favourite parts of the lesson are Claus' explanations how he works with rudiments. He is one of the greatest teachers of today!!
doubles, Swiss triplet,alternating flams,singlestrokes,breaking rules!
my favorite part is basically everything. Claus is my favorite teacher. Truly a monster n gas most ppls styles down. a god
I love moeller Techniques so this video was great! My favourite part of this video was the part where Mr.Hessler explained triplet moeller technique with some real groovy accenting. 41:17
This is a mind blowing concept. It definitely opened my eyes, and how he was able explain the concept easily. Thank you Drumeo for introducing me to another phenomenal drummer!
those Mapex sound great
I just loved the smoothness that Claus played those very difficult rudiments and how using the Moeler method makes it seem effortless ! Well done ! Second favorite was the handshake with Dave at the end .................. priceless : )
Amazing drummer and teacher
fitting paradiddlediddles into a quintuplet rhythm. fantastic stuff. Can wait to explore these!
I liked the intro the most. I just love it to see open handed players because I'm also one :)
Nice lesson as always!
At last a wonderful in deep open handed lesson ! Thanks Claus and Drumeo.
My favorite part : collapsed rudiment.
Awesome intro!! Great vid thanks drumeo
Really can't choose just 1 part as favorite... This was awesome all the while and his drumming is from other world! Just wow...
So much was great but the solo at the end was one of the best I have heard in a long time.. mind blown. There was a section where he was working all the cow bells, man that sounded so groovy. I hope I win the book since I converted to playing open handed a few years ago.
i want girls to look at me the way claus hessler looks at the camera guy...
Jojo Mayer & Jp Bouvet
This was a great lesson very informative and inspiring. man I love the drums.
thank you Claus and Drumeo
The entire lesson was great but his setup and the way he utilized it really intrigued me
Great, insightful and eloquent lesson from Master Claus Hessler, as usual! My favourite part probably was the phenomenal solo at the end of the lesson.
My favorite part was his kit configuration. It gave many lots of ideas on different ways to set up my kit
My favorite part of this video is when he stretches out the double drag tap into the groupings of 7. Gonna try to make grooves with that.
Open handed playing is a subject id like to dive into as well!
Personally, I loved the explanation of the bell pattern played at the beginning of the opening song.
This is the kind of lesson I could spend months studying. The overall concept is fairly simple, but the permutations are endless, and Klaus is a joy to watch.
Former Drumeo member, will probably resubscribe in the near future. Regardless, thanks for posting this lesson. Truly inspirational!
Thanks, glad you got something out of it!
Really , after I saw Claus Hessler playing with left hand fluently , I started building my left hand , and done . Just one thing to say , I'm also going to use the same cymbals , sticks , drumheads and drums that Claus uses .
Good luck and keep going! Thanks for watching!
