Perfecting a practice routine is a challenge for every drummer, and without actively taking lessons, identifying, resolving, and improving blind spots can be difficult. Fortunately, the minds of the masters are a great place to turn when you’re looking to expand your palette, and who better to join NDV, Sweetwater’s ruler of rhythm, than artist, educator, and multi-hyphenate drummer Claus Hessler to showcase the rudiments every drummer should have in their repertoire. Kudos to everyone who wants to learn and improve. Like the lottery winners, a rare few can be self taught and become a complete drummer. Knowledge is power. Rock on!

I like the idea of practicing in front of a mirror. Definitely gonna try that and see what my right side is doing compared to my left and see what happens when I make changes.

That technique perspective was fantastic. Every extreme metal drum video between maybe 2000-2014 didn't help much, as they all preached thumb on top grip. I was completely stuck until I read Victor Wooten's book (The Music Lesson?) & played completely thumb on side with my kit flipped lefty. I guess I needed to develop my grip tension more, & I've gotten much better & comfortable since then.

    Body awareness is so important...
Well, self awareness in general is something more people should probably work on, lol

All 26 standard American drum rudiments should be played with traditional grip.... And then when you play songs on the kit, you can always switch to match grip.....Let's see you try that.

@@DavidOakesMusic"David Oakes Music" ??? You should be proficient with both grips. Bet You're not even a drummer. Send me a video of yourself soloing with traditional grip, Dave. Or better yet, a video showing us the rudiments using both grips....Bet you can't. Just as I thought.....
