  • Sonny Emory gained fame for his legendary drumming with the R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire -- and has performed with a virtual 'who's who' in pop and jazz music including Stanley Clarke, Bette Midler, Steely Dan, Bruce Hornsby, the B-52′s, Paula Abdul, and Jennifer Lopez.
We are so happy that Sonny Emory was able join us at Drumeo, thanks to the help of Yamaha Drums, for a special lesson on "Linear Concepts & Flamercises" that will benefit drummers of all skill levels. Enjoy!

@@SXI96, to your point, I attended a Dennis chambers drum clinic at Sam Ash, Long Island, many moons ago. Legendary drummer with peerless skill. I forgot everything about his playing because he was such a condescending asshole and that is all I remembered about the clinic. I really don't know how he didn't feel embarrassed to have projected the negative vibe that he did.

It's such a great tool to spread out into all Genres.I use the idea in everything from Jazz to blues, rock, metal, hardcore, Soul, hip hop, R&B and defiantly fusion and it helps allot to prepare you for latin and reggae grooves.

Sonny says " I'm big on education".......well I just got schooled! Seriously one of the world's ultra elite drummers! I first got turned on to him through Bruce Hornsby. No matter how complex this cat plays he's always in full control and captain cool! Having the ability to remain as relaxed he does is half the battle.......he's pure finesse! I could practice every minute of my remaining years and I'd never be this good..........but we need to witness talent like this to keep us inspired and humble!

Thank you Mr. Sonny Emory for the drum clinic and lesson with one of the greatest players of all time! This was so informative and inspiring and down right cool! I saw Sonny for the first time in Columbus, Ohio at a drum symposium close to 20 years ago. All I knew about him is that he played with EWF. He came out, sat down behind a lone snare drum and literally put everyone in the theatre in total shock! A young drummer sitting next to me, looked at me as though he had been electrocuted and all he could say was "circus freak'! Thanks for this post and for the great work you're doing at Drumeo! Blessings!

Fascinating how Sonny's playing has evolved over the years. He was always rhythmically strong and used dynamics and space effectively, but his technique is better than ever and his palette continues to expand. Very musical and a pleasure to hear him solo. And unlike a lot of other drummers, he apparently prioritizes his health which gives him the endurance to practice and play extensively.
And you gotta love that he makes time to teach and does it very well!
    Thanks Jared and Drumeo!

Muito bom baterista. Esteve no Brasil em meados dos anos 80 com Jean-Luc Ponty na turnê do disco 'Fables'.

When people exclaim "The best solo ever!", this one actually can be put in that category. JUST this one that Sonny did 7 years ago is, well, not of this Earth. Stunning mastery of the kit, odd time signatures, clave, ostinatos, and oh, his finger and stick control are off the charts.

Met him back in 2007 when I sold his wife a car. I knew he looked familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it until an older guy came and said he was the drummer for Earth, Wind and Fire. REALLY cool guy.

I LOVE this channel! I never really knew who Sonny Emory is, but he played on Steely Dan's album "Two Against Nature" which I love. Gratitude, Drumeo.
