This humble man is the reason why I try to play funk music. He is one of the greatest drummer of all times. 70 years old..... and almost 50 years spreading the love of funk around the world.

This is free?!? This used to cost me $35 a lesson in 1980 dollars. I had the distinct pleasure of studying with Dave back then. I remember driving to his house in Reseda and having to pull over to first gather myself and not puke . Then go to the door and listen before ringing the bell. Whatever was pouring fresh out of his brain at that moment was gonna be today's lesson. Oh crap, that's sounds really hard. It was sometimes painful... I was one of those guys who had his lesson down, could play it backwards and forwards and as soon as I sat down behind his set I'd stink up the joint. Nerve-wracking and humbling but ultimately learned an incredible amount of stuff. However, the best takeaway from my time with him was getting to know him as a person. There was a spiritual component to him that I embraced and that, more than any technique was the most important, lasting thing- something I carry with me to this day. He was a guy of conviction, he was brave. Sometimes having to swim upstream of the LA scene but his compass always pointed true north. He was one of the few people who didn't waver just to get the gig, rare indeed. So Thanks Dave! Stay well.

I was also fortunate enough to study with David right before he re-joined TOP. I can relate to the "oh I got this" then blowing the lesson. From studying with him, I really learned what getting something down meant. Off The Record is a great book especially now that one can use the Amazing Slow Downer and play along.
As a result of learning how to actually study I went back to grad school and got an MBA (I was a terrible student as an undergrad, but 13-years later, while working full time, I went back to school). I recently caught up with him and he's looking great and is an inspiration in so many ways. Plus he really had a lot of positive things to say about the entire Drumeo operation!

fileditview Nice tribute to David Garibaldi. A great drummer/musician who has done the work and created his own thing. He seems to be a spiritual guy giving his knowledge to others. He has that humble quality that seems to be lacking in today’s world. I dig his grooves and the way he presents them.

This is definitely one of the best (if not the best) lesson in Drumeo. David Garibaldi makes this looking very easy but it requires so much effort to come into this. David is such a good teacher to explain these concepts. While many others would tend to be in a demo mode, David's focus is primarily to share his huge knowledge and experience. There is a lot of information here. Thanks you David and of course thank you Drumeo!

After all these years, What is Hip is still part of my warm up. First time I heard him, it totally blew my mind! David and Steve Gadd have been my principle influences in since long as I can remember. When he left during Unban Renewal, it was flat, flat, flat. Thanks Dave for the lesson and inspiration.

Long overdue for the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame! Few drummers have had such an enormous influence on this instrument. Not even sure many players realize they are doing things that go back to David, but hopefully they will realize it now!

Awsome. Saw him with TOP in New Haven at Toads years ago. He played on a yellow Yamaha Beech Custom kit which sounded amazing. Saw him up close for entire concert. Couldnt leave to use the bathroom...mezmerizing. Truly a giant. Their music helps too!

I'm re-watching this again, after watching it again, and again over the years, and from a different perspective every time... Soooo many good moments... Knowing where there ONE was (in the mind of the creator) is sooo helpful in feeling comfortable with these complicated rhythms! But I think essentially what I want to say to both Dave and Drumeo is THANK YOU!!!!!!! Life changing stuff.

Insane! David probably is the most influential drummer to me at the moment and the personal hero that Jojo Mayer used to be a few years ago. Drumming doesn't have to be fancy technical stuff or the faster the better. What David plays, is just mindblowing! Even the pretty "simple" beat in the beginning is way above all this prog and speed stuff that many other highly regarded drummers play, because it grooves. And this is the most important thing, a drummer has to do. Groove! Not play as fast or proggy as possible. Thanks for being a drummer and not a blower, Mr. Garibaldi!

I first watched David Garibaldi in action, in his video 'Tower of Groove' in UA-cam . I think it was around 20 yrs old video since he had no grey hair then :). I was very impressed by his unorthodox way of not hitting the 2s and 4s as usually drummers do and the 4 way co-ordination in his grooves and congas and the wind instruments. My favourite type of music nowadays.
