I called some community senior centers in town and asked if they had ladies that actively crocheted. I found six centers that had a crochet group that got together twice a week. They made blankets and baby beanies and donated them to hospitals. Well I gave each of them one huge box of beautiful yarn. They were thrill to receive so much yarn.
I plan to do this as well..my stash needs thinning out and I really don't want to donate it to an Op shop because that is where a lot of my scrap had come from..
Some churches will take donated yarn, like the church I attend. They have a Prayer Shawl Ministry and members get together and knit or crochet prayer shawls and blankets for church members who are ill, or who are moving away.
My husband was nearby while I watched this video and he said, "It's the law of conservation of stash. It cannot be created or destroyed, just moved from one home to another." LOL!
My teenage daughter has learned to crochet and was thrilled when she found out that one of her friends did as well. Her friend doesn’t have a or of money for yarn so I get to spoil her a bit. I go through my yarn periodically and make sure her friend gets at least a large paper bag full of it. Sometimes she gets a couple of bags. I get so much joy in sharing all that yarn with someone so young, that loves to crochet as much as I do.
when I learned my younger cousin crochet as well, I gave her a huge paper bag of yarn on her birthday 😂 not sure if she still does because she just got into college for her pre med course, but I told her to send me a msg if she needs more yarn 😂
I was decluttering and everyone at work got beanies, head warmers, and granny square bags with larger amounts. I used up a lot of scraps and made them into thick mats and beds for a no kill animal shelter.
Yarn- the teens love it too. Please consider destashing by donating to your local school. I have a knit and crochet club at my school. I was paying for all of the yarn and tools. One day my local yarn shop gave me a bunch of yarn and hooks. It really helped me grow my club and give more kids access to the fiber arts.
Last year I decided enough consumerism with craft supplies. From now on I will only buy items for a specific project AFTER going into my craft room and making sure I don't already have something that will work. It's incredibly freeing!! I no longer feel like I have to jump on the buy this now bandwagon.
For now, I’m having to skip yarn unboxing videos on my favorite channels. After a few gushing reviews, I head right to the yarn site to “just look”, then put a few in my cart … next I’m watching for the delivery truck at my house. Maybe someday when I’m stronger…
I work at an Aged Care Facility. And I love to crochet. And I needed to destash, and use up scrappy leftovers. The perfect solution? Crochet a bunch (and I mean a bunch) of lap rugs for the residents. I probably made about 30, maybe more. I didn't count. But it gave me the opportunity to try out different stitches and granny squares. Had a blast, did something I loved to do in my spare time, and reduced my stash considerably.
I'm ready to cut my stash by about 90%. This video came at the right time. I'm just waiting to see what your spreadsheet template looks like. My husband will be thrilled.
Same here. Tooooooo much is no fun. Too much work to constantly deal with (plus all the mental clutter that comes from having too much stuff) it’s exhausting.
Oooooh I love the idea of selling the donated yarn! I get sent a lot of materials from companies too, so I thought to do a giveaway, but donating the cash for it seems SO MUCH BETTER!!!! Thank you so much for that idea! I might do the same xx What a great destash video - something I definitely need to do as well!
I started crocheting a few months ago and recently went on a yarn buying bender. All on sale and assigned to a project but I see how easy it can be to go overboard. There are some beautiful yarns out there 😩
Just in time! I'm de=stashing as well. I've gone from crochet to knitting and found I like different yarn for that. I'll never NOT crochet because it's my first love but I'm enjoying more natural fibers now.
Cannot for the love of me understand why they never crochet clothes on themselves love crochet clothes yet they never wear it seems silly buying lots of yarn been lying around year in and year out better donate it to charity it’s an a addictions hope this makes sense thanks for sharing
I am ALWAYS down for looking at someone's yarn stash, but that cute little fur baby who kept looking up like, "Yeah, mom! What ya doing? Looks like fun"....too CUTE!!!
Thank you for your wonderful ideas, gentle nudges and inspiration to destash. I have been "shopping my own stash" to work it down but, it has been taking little while. I started with my smallest collection - lone 50g skeins of sock yarn. Before I started my journey into sock knitting, I had picked up the yarn to knit pairs of fingerless mitts. So, slowly and steadily, I'm clearing up space on my shelves. 😊 ***Side note*** When I hear the word "destash" I always think of Hervé Villechaize's character, "Tattoo" in the original Fantasy Island open. On my island, he's welcoming me to my favorite fantasy lys "THE Stash." There, the yarn I want is always in stock - in the quantities I need and any color I can imagine. Oh! And, did I mention my fantasy pocketbook allows me to purchase anything in the shop AND I can tote it ALL home in 1 manageable bag? LOL! It's so fun to dream! Lol! 🤟 ✌️💜🧶
A church in my area held a crafting sale that was other people destashing there supplies. Loads of yarn and fabric. Loads of it were free stuff. Right now I'm on the "just use what you " season! Love the glasses. Now i want new glasses like yours! 😊
when I moved house last year I just could not mentally get my head around destashing my yarn (and so forth) one of my sister n laws told me that I would need to live to a 103 to use it all, and I responded "that I plan to"..so it all got moved, into storage..now as I try to move it out of storage and to my home my sister is helping me to finally sort into what to donate, what to keep for students because I teach crochet classes for beginners and I like to supply them with a ball of yarn & hook to start them on their journey..besides, it helps to clear out my stash, chuckle..and to what I want to keep for projects..it's nice to know that I am not the only one who has to do it from time to time..
My sister is making what she calls a “chaos cover” for her beanbag chair and I destashed some yarn in donation to that cause as a birthday gift per her request. Her only request was that it all be weight 4 and no crazy textures, and that’s the vast majority of what I work with, so she got a nice big bag of yarn that had been wasting away in my stash without a plan for a long while, some of which I’d been given as part of a friend’s destashing
Hi I lost my mojo about 4 years ago I was half way through a corner to corner blanket for my dad and put it away. About 8 months later my dad past away, I went on a huge guilt trip for not finishing his blanket I threw it in the bin and got rid of everything related to crotchet. About a month ago I got my mojo back and need to restart again I only wish I kept that unfinished blanket which I could of finished for myself to keep. That's all in the past now on to new beginnings. Thank you for your UA-cam ❤
I just did a mini purge and am donating 10,700 grams of yarn to my prayer shawl ministry group. It is fun to make visual space and truthfully a lot of it was where I overbought for projects.
man when you said "sponsor" at the start I was getting ready to skip through the next minute but actually seeing you directly supported by fans instead of potentially taking a sponsorship deal from a shady company was so refreshing. This is my first time viewing your channel and I'm excited to start watching more of your videos!
I want to add on more as I'm continuing to watch and also clarify that sponsorships are amazing especially when paired with a community that supports you and gets to see you thrive and feel appreciated for the time and resources they provide to you. Also, everything you say makes me more and more pumped to support your channel, like specifying that you keep track of which skeins you're comfortable getting money back for when de-stashing, and which ones you'll pass to money along to others instead!
I donated a 10 gallon Rubbermaid trash bin worth of yarn around the beginning of the year. I had inherited that yarn when my grandma passed about 20 years ago and finally came to terms that I wasn't going to use it. The texture was too scratchy that the few attempts I made to use it made me abandon those WIPs every time.
There's a small business near where I live which is basically a craft thrift store with all of their inventory coming from community donations, and it's run by volunteers from the senior center. I work near this shop at a bookstore and I've had parents tell me that their children LOVE going there and finding cool things to use.
I kind of de-stashed, my mom passed and had a ton of yarn. I know how to crochet and knit so I decided to keep it and make things. Preferably baby blankets. Wish me luck!
I've had some pretty nice skeins of unopened packages of acrylic yarn for a project I never got around to and lost interest. I found someone who has happy to purchase for a really nominal amt that I donated to my church. Win Win!
I would guess about 46 bags. Kudos to you for finding the courage to destash. I purge some yarn each year to a local yarn store that does a rummage sale. I have also put together projects (some started) in bags with a pattern to sell. I donate what I don’t sell.
I was getting stressed just watching you de-stash. I am in the process of downsizing in anticipation to moving to a smaller home in the next few years. At first I was depressed over selling a lot of my collectibles but as they sold I felt better knowing they were going to a home where they'd be displayed and not packed away in my basement. I have not gotten to the yarn yet because I decided to make scrap blankets with much of it. BUT I am sure there will come a time in the near future that I will have to part with a lot of my stash. Thanks for the video. Love your puppy!
There is a hospice in our small town ... You have just given me a great idea. Maybe make some lap blankets for them? I know they give away small hand made quilts because they gave me one when my husband was dying of cancer.
This was such as great video! I had never considered selling yarn to de-stash. Thank you for showing the step-by-step process. Also gorgeous finished projects at the end 🌻
Thank you for this video, Toni. Usually craft along with your videos or have a snack but I stopped and decided to destash along before I could talk myself out of it.
Wow. When you said you had a lot of bags I never thought it would be that many! That had to be at least 50. But I totally understand. Who doesn’t love a good project bag?
Thanks for this. I WISH I had just two boxes of yarn. I'm gearing up for a destash myself and dreading it with every fiber of my being. Your episode came at just the right time.
@tlyarncrafts I love me a good spread sheet! My yarn spread sheet is way out of date. Usi g that database, how may yards of yarn are you destashing? How many did you keep? I geek out over spreadsheets. Have you thought about expanding the functionality of the destash spreadsheet? Have one big database. Each new item needs to be entered. If/when a project has been decided, put that in. Unlimited ways to sort this information. Sort by date purchased/gifted - if 12 months have passed - put status as destash. See where I'm going with this. Did I mention that I geek out with spreedsheets? HeHe 😅 Congrats on destashing. Challenge yourself and your followers on a no buy month.
I've been using a spreadsheet similar to yours for years now, but I add the label color and lot numbers along with the basic color family they fall into. After every project I update it, so that the next time I want to start a project I can use the filters in Excel to determine what yarns I have enough of, then if they're yarns I want to use for the specific project. I also include the label info for grams and yardage, along with a formula to calculate the remaining yardage based on the current physical weight.
I'm new to fiber crafts, so I'm very excited to take advantange of all the destashing ya'll do in response to this video. May or may not have already ordered from 2 people on Ravelry this week....
I have collected yarn, and craft stuff over the years that I have purchased and had been given to me and I have given away so much to charity, churches, family, and nursing homes to make use of it. I have a maybe pile yet that I am not sure about that I still have but I have a feeling that stuff will also be donated. I loved watching your process, I don't have the patience to be that detail-oriented so it always gets donated as is.
I also need to destash my Fiestaware collection and my husband's kite collection. The concept of your spreadsheet is terrific and I can adjust it for those as well! THANK YOU!!
I would love to have some of the problems you do. I love crocheting with yarns in blue. Your cat & dog also reminds me of my home. I will send you a picture of my girls. How cute. Thank you for teaching me new techniques also.
I needed this video. Thanks for being honest about the whole process. I don't have too much yarn but I've been making items that I do not use eg handbags. But I've stopped buying yarn about a year now and really trying to use them out by making items that I like and would use or gift to someone The struggle is so real! 🇹🇹
Love your work and your show. Thanks for sharing how to do tehisian crochet , I made some hair bands and sold them for twenty dollars 😊. Keep up the amazing work. Bonny
In one of the shots, there is a hank(?) of some neon orange and yellow yarn and it was so fantastic looking. I get it would be too much for most people but if I ever saw that, I would need to have it immediately.
This weekend was our local yarn shop day and everyone at Yarn-It and Haberdashery sent you a big old shout out. We hooked up one of our local yarn dyers up with your book and sent her to your channel so she can learn Tunisian crochet. So I just wanted to give you a big ole Ohio shout out. We love you Toni! OH, an I guess 32 bags.
Thanks so much for doing this video! This helps me not feel so daunted by my stash! The Excel spreadsheet is awesome and very helpful! I love the pattern that your mom made! That is on my list to make! I didn't realize she designed it until I watched this video. Who is the cute black kitten? I love how you let us watch you set up and go through what you had to to make this happen! You are an inspiration in more than just crocheting!
Thank you for encouraging me to destash my unwanted yarn. I have already given some yarn to a senior living facility that teaches crochet to their residents. I could do more.🥰
I purged the tote bags last year and you have provided great hints on sorting and letting go of the yarn. May check with a friend and see if senior center or nursing home takes yarn. Would have snatched up your Mother's designed piece in a heartbeat, but behind on my videos.
I regularly help my local thrift stores with destashing, if you get my drift. lol Every ball and every skein feels like rescuing a puppy from the animal shelter. I take them home, give em some TLC and when they've grown into something beautiful I have a pretty handmade gift.
This was great! I do a couple of things. First, I am doing a yarn fast for 2024. I will buy the occasional skein to finish a project, use a Michael's voucher, or pick up something I know I'll actually use at a thrift store, but so far, I'm averaging just under $4 a month. I'm doing a spreadsheet of yarn in my stash so I will eventually know what I actually have, and I'm trying to go in once a week and find a project to add to my "to do" list from things I have on hand. I'm also committed to having a scrap project going at all times, often a blanket, and some of those I'll donate to a mission in town. I have been thinking I need to do the same with hats, so some of the bigger leftover skeins can go there. I also always have a dishcloth, scrubbie, or potholder going, and that is where my random 100% cotton goes. Some of those end up in my drawer, most go to the mission. And then our library system pairs with a local store, Who Gives a Scrap, so once a month I take random craft destash stuff, and I bring it there, and I can come home with new to me stuff. Or not. In April, I brought in 23 pounds of stuff, and left with 4.
Thanks for all the information. I need to do this. I used to belong to Knit Crate and there are many yarns Ill never use. Plus all the usual second thoughts to that once so hot golden project you had to have or make that you‘ve rethought and probably won't ever make. I downloaded your inventory sheet. It's very thorough, I do appreciate it. 😊
Oh my, all those wonderful bags!! It would hurt to destash those, but obviously, necessary. After all, one must make room for... more bags. I need to do this... well, I need to destash yarn and fabric too. You have inspired me.
Hello from Swansea, Illinois. I have given away so much yarn because I didn’t realize that I had as much as I did. I just gave my daughter in law about twenty five large totes of yarn and supplies, I taught her how to crochet and she is doing great.
I’m very new to crochet(Jan 2024) I found your channel first and tried Tunisian Crochet first before jumping into normal crochet. I’ve now accumulated over 60 balls of yarn and expecting more in post, I really need to start using it. I’ve decided to make preemie hats for local hospitals
I'm not ready for a yarn de-stash yet (just re-started and stuck with crocheting in August) but the mention of craft supplies... 🙃 I love the idea of donating to a group in my community, excellent suggestion!
I just recently went through all my yarn worked it up since i had alooot of small skeins i made a ton of granny squares and it became a pretty blanket my mom loves
Beautiful yarns and yarny things! It takes some real self control to part ways with all that gorgeous stuff, so good for you! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Thanks for taking us on this process- very resourceful. Awe…we watch the same true crime 🤗
Thank you for explaining how you are doing this. You have a space where you can take pictures of your yarn. (This can translate to someone photographing something they are selling.) You organized the yarn into lots, and we saw what they looked like. You have a spreadsheet and you explained your categories. Thanks. OK the number of bags is 40 and keeping about a dozen what be good, (I use bags, coffee containers - minus the coffee, my yarn bag....
I just got rid of 4 big bags of yarn 😂 I gave them away to a good friend of mine and I think she really enjoyed the gift! My stash is so large that my yarny friends just like, come to my house to shop for yarn for their next projects 😂 It's amazing. I love to make blankets as well but, once I finish them, they get donated to a friend or to family members. Same with cardigans, shawls and scarves! I love to crochet and knit so all of those finished projects have to go somewhere! 😂
My grandma and I both do a lot of crafting together. I was already working on de-stashing by making scrap projects, animals, bags, granny squares and so on. And then she gave me a whole garbage bag full of yarn she didn’t want 😅 safe to say I have a lot of projects to work on lol
Love ur collection mines small but I have learned so much from u and very inspired… thanks for sharing … my daughter has same star patch so I less with her tell her she was good in class 😂
I called some community senior centers in town and asked if they had ladies that actively crocheted. I found six centers that had a crochet group that got together twice a week. I plan to do this as well..my stash needs thinning out and I really don't want to donate it to an Op shop because that is where a lot of my scrap had come from..
Such a good idea. I think I’ll do the same since I have 20 storage bins of yarn. I can purge about 3
Some churches will take donated yarn, like the church I attend.
I almost choked on my water reading this comment
And is he wrong! I think not lol
Love that!! Do I have your permission to use that quote in some merch I'm designing?
@@lovealwaysmom Ha! Yes, as long as you send me a link so I can buy one. :D
@jenthulhu Thank you very much. Will do that. It might take a while.

Darn good idea. If I could just stick to it, my other half would be a lot happier with our financial situation!
I donated hundreds of skeins to our local senior center... They were so grateful they sent me a thank you card that made me cry... ❤❤❤❤

This motivated me to destash too I’ve changed what I tend to knit and crochet and I need to get rid of yarn weights that don’t work for me anymore.
Thanks for this. I WISH I had just two boxes of yarn. I'm gearing up for a destash myself and dreading it with every fiber of my being. Your episode came at just the right time.
I’m in the process of packing and I donated my yarn and some other craft supplies to Upcycle Art Shop.
Toni - in awe of your bravery in letting go of so much stuff! Inspiring!
that little dog is so cute.
HeHe 😅
Congrats on destashing. Challenge yourself and your followers on a no buy month.
I love them, too! So much useful information can be stored and easily accessed. It's so satisfying.
WOW!!! You (and your pup! and beautiful black kitty!) are wonderful! Thanks for such a great video!
I’m drinking mint tea also ! Love all that you offer the yarny community I’ll shout you out as much as I can ! You deserve all good things. Toni
Those samples are beautiful and great tips on destashing!
Toni- you made the first step-- so proud of you!!! lol!!
Pimple patch! So funny! And Denzel, too - "I'm leaving here with something."😄
But I've stopped buying yarn about a year now and really trying to use them out by making items that I like and would use or gift to someone
The struggle is so real! 🇹🇹
You have such a calming voice, watching you while winding up some balls of yarn ❤
Your dog is so cute!
Due to your video showing how to start crocheting I am now going to have a go. Wish me luck..and thank you from the U.K.
Destashing seems like such a huge task, but you are mastering this. You inspired us all.
Inspired us all? It is weird to speak for others in absolutes. I understand your point, but it’s probably best to just speak for yourself.
@Lisa-vb3gn too bad we aren't able to take a compliment that was intended for someone else as it was meant to be.
Hi Tony, I’m new to your channel and I love your videos so far you are so kind and you are so inspiring
I received Tunisian needles like yours and I love the feel of them
I think this may be the best background music I've ever heard on UA-cam.
Soooo relaxing
Agreed!
I regularly help my local thrift stores with destashing, if you get my drift. lol
Every ball and every skein feels like rescuing a puppy from the animal shelter. I take them home, give em some TLC and when they've grown into something beautiful I have a pretty handmade gift.
This was a great video! Thanks for showing what the de-stash process looks like. Invaluable info. ❤
Holy cow Toni I would definitely love the variegated yarns
Thank you for this video. I really enjoy your UA-cam videos. I crochet and donate everything I make. Also, I really, really like your glasses.
Hello from Swansea, Illinois. I have given away so much yarn because I didn’t realize that I had as much as I did. I just gave my daughter in law about twenty five large totes of yarn and supplies, I taught her how to crochet and she is doing great.
Excellent advice on de-stashing. Thanks for sharing!
Aah! Beautiful ... talented ... tough cookie with a marshmallow centre. I do enjoy your presentations. Thank you 😊
I just recently went through all my yarn worked it up since i had alooot of small skeins i made a ton of granny squares and it became a pretty blanket my mom loves
Beautiful yarns and yarny things! It takes some real self control to part ways with all that gorgeous stuff, so good for you! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks for taking us on this process- very resourceful.
I'm saving this video so that the next time my husband or kid complains that I have too much yarn 😂 I love your stash!
Thats Lotta working great project to bringto magic you have lots of patience love your craft.
😅 that blue and gray is beautiful 😍 🤩
Omg I would have taken those sock weight Hanks. I'm finding out I love the look and feel of it compared to my other yarns.
Wow amazing but I am hanging on to mine!! I would go with large projects! Toni best of luck to you!!
omg the gabi belle video in the background. amazing taste
This is a great video! Also I adore your heart glasses!
I like cleaning out my stash too. I’ve done it many times.
Toni is so organized! I could NEVAHHH 😩
Love ur collection mines small but I have learned so much from u and very inspired… thanks for sharing … my daughter has same star patch so I less with her tell her she was good in class 😂
NGL ~ when I saw the caption the first thought that came to my mind was, “BLASPHEMY!” 🤣🤣🤣
