  • In this video we're checking out The Hoodoo Gurus. We know very little about this band. The song is supposed to be another take on the Cylone Tracy incident. It should be interesting. Enjoy!

My foster father was stationed in Darwin during WWII and he manned AAA . He never talked about it ever , even when asked .

no many songs about weather events .. but that was a pretty vicious one in Australia ... apparently it was the smallest typhoon ever recorded.. but really intense... also resulted in the biggest recorded load of passengers on an aircraft .. 800+ in a Qantas 747 evacuation flight

Their absolutely definitive song is Leilani, off the same album (Stoneage Romeos) as Tojo.

Great Aussie band. A number of excellent songs such as, "What's My Scene", "Bittersweet", "My Girl" and many more.

Very cool. Thanx for the reaction. The Drummer's name is James Baker. He was a pretty outstanding figure in the Australian music scene. He played in one of Perth's first punk bands, I think he helped The Triffids get their first gigs when they were mere teenagers in Perth, and he played in an influential band called The Scientists. He was also a friend of my Uncle's (he worked at the pub where the Gurus shot their video for ''My Girl'') and he released his own single called ''You're Gonna Get Punched'' (not recommended for a reaction). He joined Beasts of Bourbon, and I believe he still has the same hairstyle today.

and James Baker played in The Victims with Hoodoo Gurus singer Dave Faulkner before he joined The Scientists. Then he rejoined Dave Faulkner to form Le Hoodoo Gurus in 1981.

Gurus. Proper band. Amazing live. Vast catalogue of great songs, some worth trying are "Miss Freelove," "The Right Time," and "1,000 Miles Away" featuring The Bangles' Vicki Peterson on backing vocals.

Tracy was a cyclone that destroyed Darwin Australia a city which the Japanese (Tojo was there leader and a common Australian wartime slang for the Japanese ) bombed and wished take in ww2 but failed so while Tojo didn’t make it to Darwin but Tracy did.

The Gurus are part of music royalty here, I suppose a bit like Green Day in America. This song is about a whole lot of things, yes Cyclone Tracy but also the destruction of Darwin and much of northern Australia by the Japanese in 1942.
For our American friends, Pearl Harbour was attacked once, northern Australia was bombed to the stone age in over 100 raids .
Interesting fact, lead singer Dave Faulkner's dad served in HMAS Canberra that was sunk in the Savo Island action on 1943.
Always loved the Gurus and last saw them again last year, still sound as good as ever

@@hanierfamily Great to know you like this stuff that I grew up with so many years ago now!. Other Aust bands you may like from that 70s/80s pub band era (if you haven't checked them out already) are The Angels, The Church, The Saints, The Sunnyboys, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Nick Cave, The Waifs, Weddings, Parties Anything and Paul Kelly, to name a few.
Most are still going strong (although some aging disgracefully like me) and we have been to see many of them in the last few years (covid notwithstanding). They mostly sound as good as ever and have kept making new music over 40 odd years!
      Enjoy.

Kind of obscure reference to Cyclone Tracey that hit Darwin and almost destroyed a lot of it back on Christmas day in 1975 (I think - could have been 73, or 74). And of course the Japanese attacked Darwin from the air (one of my father's uncles was killed in the attack), so it's an interesting little dialogue.

This song is very reminiscent of ‘Turning Japanese’ by the UK band The Vapors.
I wonder which track came first?

    • @OnceWasRStrathfield
      @OnceWasRStrathfield Рік тому +2

Vapors one came first and was a big hit in Australia. It never occured to me that this song sounds similar to ''Turning Japanese'' but it does...
Now I can't unhear it! The Gurus were always a bit tongue in cheek, so perhaps they were being cheeky with apeing The Vapors... or they just really wanted their own version of ''Turning Japanese''.

I've never tried Australian banana pie, but it sounds like the English banoffee pie. It's easy to make but it used to be a pain to boil the Carnations milk for an hour; now they sell it already done as a tin of caramel which saves you boiling several tins for an hour. It is beautiful but must have thousands of calories in it. A must eat, but only on rare occasions.
I've been busy working for the last couple of months, and so this is my first listen to you both for a while. Mrs.Hanier I like your red hair and you seem more relaxed now; which is great. Mr.Hanier you seem like a fun guy with the T-Shirt and everything. You seem a nice couple to chill with on an evening over a few beers etc.

Tojo was the Japanese leader in WW2, he never was able to invade Darwin, unlike Cyclone Tracey who devastated the town.
