Back in the day…. When I was in the military…. I went through Cold Weather Survival training up in Alaska. We had to ford through an almost freezing river, then, while shaking uncontrollably, learn to build a fire and dry ourselves and our clothes. We also were made to dig a foxhole in decent snowpack, shown to cover the entrance with a poncho liner (thin blanket), then lit a small tea candle at bottom. I swear it got up to 80 degrees in that hole! I had to take clothing off it was that warm! This video brought back a lot of memories! Thanks Steve! Great content!!
A tea candle isn't going to make a snow cave 80° lol I'm willing to bet your body just found the best alternative to compensate outside a freezing river to make you feel that way. I've done many polar plunges and winter primitive camping. The human body does what it has to to make sure you're mental acuity keeps you focused on what's necessary, not what's wanted.
@@fireboxstovehey bro I have a question for ya if that’s ok? I’ve been fighting trying to make a fire for years now. I get plenty of smoke, but NEVER do I get any coals. Or the coals aren’t orange. I'm glad to see you willing to go into the winter on a solo overnight. I like winter camping (no bugs). I got a 5 "ti a couple months ago and I've been loving it. I only wish I had gotten all basic the accessories from the start. I feel the need to get the extended grill and boil plate to round out the kit. I've used a competitor's smaller version for morning coffee. But your 5" version is a much simpler set up, cleaner break down, and actually folds flatter than my smaller one. Nowadays I only use yours because I can raise the base for a smaller fire for coffee but can also get good coals for a meal when needed. And I don't feel like coals will escape to the dirt and start a root fire underground, which happened with the competitor's. I'm glad I realized there was underground smoldering before it could turn into a big problem. Your gear shows how much thought you've put into making an interactive system rather than just individual pieces of gear. Anyway, thanks for the content. Be well.
Thank you so much for all the thoughtful insight I'm so glad you're enjoying your firebox gear 😎👍 if you leave a note on your order that Steve said to give you 20% off then my customer service specialist will refund you for that amount a day or two after the order. Looks like fun. Awesome video, it reminds me of my snow camping days, sitting in a cave above the trees on the NE slopes of Mt. Hood, listening to Jazz from WSU in Pullman, Washington, on a little transistor radio. For many years it was an annual New Years Eve adventure. Good times. Some side thoughts; There are harnesses you can buy that make pulling that Pulk a lot easier, check out Skipulk. For some time now, in dry weather, I have been using a DiversiTech 18 X 18" flame blanket under my Nano and the Gen2, It can withstand 3000 degree temps. In an emergency it can wrap up around the stove to help shutting it down, it is heavier than foil, but more durable. It is used as a flame guard when welding near wood or other combustibles. You will never get a fire hot enough to burn through it and it won't rip or tear. Steve, Thanks for your products and videos, I've been enjoying them. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Thank you for the very valuable info! For me the foil was to make easy clean up. But the blanket sounds very handy for many scenarios 👍😎 Cheers my friend!

I am currently rewatching this one, because its in the 90°s here in SC and i just want to flop down into all that snow and liten to the "hsssssss" as it melts from my poor overheated body (and yes, i know, its a lot hotter elsewhere!)! This is one my favorite of your videos, always!
Your video was great to watch and brought back GREAT memories. Tell me how great that cup of coffee and hot breakfast is in the morning. I do enjoy winter camping to this day. Have had the honor in the past of being a Wnter Mountaineering Instructor for the National Ski Patrol for 7 years. Great group to work with and the largest winter rescue organizatin in the nation. One suggestion: I carry a waterproof bag that I put my boots in and then place them at the bottom of my sleeping bag. That way they are warm and not frozen in the morning and much better for the snowshoeing back out.
That's a great tip! I put hand warmers in my boots with the mittens on top while I slept that extra 2 hours. The hand warmers didn't make my boots warm but I'm sure they were a lot less cold. Thanks so much for the awesome comment!
What a wonderful night in your snow shelter and good food to top it all off, life doesn't get much better than that! I have three of your stoves and just love them. :) :) Thanks for sharing.
you got my vote with the aeropress coffee maker. no sense depriving yourself of the best brew possible. BTW the shelter was a challenging one, not sure I would have thought or tried that. cheers, enjoyed the clip.

What an adventure. That tin foil idea was very slick and worked out well. That wool blanket was pretty nice also. Glad it worked out. Another good stove product too. Thanks and take care, Al
You are really fortunate to get snow like that.Where I live if it people see a snowflake they get aggrivated.I tell people Winter is my fav time of year and they look at me all disgusted.😆The Freestyle has become one of my fav stoves. Thanks for sharing.❄️
That's awesome. It's great to hear you are enjoying your Freestyle! Ya, Utah was needing this moisture big time. Now just a few more years of it and we'll hopefully see it affect our lake levels. We are thankful for it.
You should look into building a “Smitty Sled” as opposed to that friction robbing palk! Your snow journeys will be a lot less energy consuming having a container up on waxed skies with less touching the snow!! You will be amazed at how much of a difference it makes! Have your rope constraints built into one inch plastic pipe crisscrossed fastened to a waist harness so the sled doesn’t get away from you going down hill!! The video was excellent as always!!!! Snug as a bug!!!!!

ello! I worked at the Marine Mountain Warfare Training Center in the sierra nevada mountains where they trained for winter and summer survival. Sat in on training sessions but never snow camped. Got to do that. they said a candle made all the difference in temp and the entrance was lower than the sleeping platform! Your sleep system looks comfortable. Northing like natural products like wool and down good job!
Hey, just a friendly reminder - whenever you are working, especially in the winter time, you should not have ring on your ringer. Firstly, because the metal can cold-down that figer to the level it will decapitate the finger itself. Secondly, because you can very easily get stucked your hand in something you don't want to with that ring (some tough spot or whatever). And this actually happened to me twice. Therefore, ring as a necklace is an option, but really - having a ring in a winter is bad idea. Anyway, good video though!
Wow! I live in Hakata, and surprised that you cooked stake with a japanese HAKATA spice! smokey foods look delicious. Steave, thank you for the video, amaging "10°F Snow Selter Camping"! I want to experience and get a skill in snow season with my firefox stove.
That's awesome! I didn't realize that Hakata was a place. I would love to come visit sometime. I thoroughly enjoyed the last time I was able to go to Japan and have wanted to go back to show my family. Thanks so much for your kind comment.
Talk about 'stealth camping': it can't get any better than this snow season tutorial! The table is a key, along with the stove, to provide a hot meal. We then can BRING OUR OWN HEAT through metabolism to sustain our body temperature through the night. (Of course, the high R-value clothing is also key!)
Thanks Steve for taking us along on your snow shelter adventure. Fantastic video, and I enjoyed it I'm still sitting at home with a hand half numb for my surgery that is super sensitive to the cold. I haven't been able to get out but watching you helped. Thanks
I thought I might have to do that a couple times. Once on Timpanogos, and another time on Mt.Shasta. Fortunately I was able to track myself back before dark. Always testing the limits.
I've watched a lot of these types of videos and I must say that I really enjoyed this one very much.....I'd put it in the top 10 for this type......maybe even top 5......and you have a new subscriber too...
While you did, indeed, survive the night, the glamour cooking, food processing table, bacon, coffe press and lets not forget the... asparragus... kind of made it look not su much survival and maybe more of glamping... But hey! Good video! PD: I need to get me a set of those puffy pants, look comfy. Mikel
Pretty cool video. Really like that new freestyle stove. I got the original firebox stove. Modified it to have a side feed port. Always love your cooking videos. And with the snow cave survival..really fun and interesting.
Really enjoy your videos. Your spirit is grand my friend! I just bought a $980 external frame backpack. I've looked into pack goats a bit. How much weight can they carry long distance? I'd want to train one up slowly to get really strong. I threw 50 pounds in the external frame pack and did 1.5 miles on foot rested 2 days then another 1.7. The goal is 100 pounds 10 miles a day. If I had a pack goats he could take half that weight for me perhaps. In the future when I've got all my equipment I'm looking for someone who is down to do a 30 day survival trip. I'm gonna be packing a Diana 48 .22 pellet gun and a small fishing net and collapsible pole for game. I need to learn the edibles. I figured 50 pounds of that 100 pounds will be dried food for the first run try to hunt as much as possible small game. Then attempt a second run all foraging and hunting when confident with skill set. Posting this comment 3 xs I hope you see it. 👍 If you'd ever consider a 30 day challenge let me know old soul.

Thank you for your comment and information, it's greatly appreciated! 😊 definitely better to be safe than sorry!!
Nice little cook table. The steak looked marvelous.❤
Thank you!
👏bravo, thank you steve✌
So glad you liked it Dom Thank you for letting me know!
I love winter camping but I have only slept in a hammock. I should try this sometime. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure! Thanks for the nice comment!

Thanks Roger!
@@fireboxstove i ty for the video ! :)
Oh no! I just ate dinner, it wasn't too shabby, but I'm hungry all over again! 😀👍
Lol ya that can happen! Time for another good meal?! 😉
Yes, this is all very true!! Thank you for the comment James! 😊
Steak looks so good
Thank you, it turned out delicious!!
Thanks Steve for taking us along on your snow shelter adventure. Fantastic video, and I enjoyed it I'm still sitting at home with a hand half numb for my surgery that is super sensitive to the cold. I haven't been able to get out but watching you helped. Thanks
Thanks! I hope your hand get feeling better soon! 😎
Best part of camping is good eats
We would have to completely agree with you there!!
gorgeous!!
Thank you Darrell!
I thought I might have to do that a couple times. Once on Timpanogos, and another time on Mt.Shasta. Fortunately I was able to track myself back before dark. Always testing the limits.
Sounds familiar Dave I hope those limits don't bite us one of these days. Living on the edge makes it just a little funner
Hi Steve! Good to see you! Take care.
great video you showed how we can create a borrow if conditions and tools permit and survive
Yes, it's very helpful too know in emergencies. Thank you for the comment and for watching. 😁
Hard core man!💪🏽 Cool trip!
Thank you, it was fun to finally get out in a winter shelter!
I've watched a lot of these types of videos and I must say that I really enjoyed this one very much.....I'd put it in the top 10 for this type......maybe even top 5......and you have a new subscriber too...
Thank you Dale!! So great to hear your feedback and that you enjoyed the video. Happy to have you.
@@fireboxstove I've watched several others since...I like the style of the videos....very good.
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate your support over the years 👍😎
Love your blanket..! Where did you find that..? & your sweater too! Looks very cozy! 🙂
Very cool 👍🏼✝️
Thank you Tony!
👍 Awesome video!
Thanks so much Jeff!
Are you still going fishing with the dogs and the goats I love watching you thanks
Yes, just waiting for it to warm up. 😁 hopefully sooner than later.
