So I don't know when updates to the Mig-19 actually come out, but a few people were commenting in the last few videos about it so I thought I'd bring out the Mig-19 for a little fight and see how she does, I don't know what they did to it exactly, but the flight model feels pretty nice now, it was ok in the past but its much better now. Big thank you to supreme for helping with this video and thank you to all of you for watching.

During the Korean War U.S. Prop Planes shot down MIG's on a couple occasions-- The Hawker Sea Fury shot down a MIG-15 and The AU4 Corsair also shot down a MIG-15! Vietnam-- A-1 Skyraider shoots down MIG-17 I believe on two separate occasions!!

I would like to see this again. But this time using "Slit-Throttles" and "Differential-Thrust" to enhance maneuvering if that is possible with the Mig-19.

Lets take a moment to appreciate work of MiG engineers on this one. Having thrust to weight ratio 0.85 in 1955 is just insane
If I remember right, the guns on the MiG-19 are NR-30s, absolutely devastating cannons- and instead of ammo drums, they have ammo belts that internally extend down the leading edge of the wing. You literally have as much ammo as you have wing.

@@SandeepKumar-qh3zs i totally bet. In war thunder, its modelled as well, but you lose the ENTIRE gun instead of the proportional ammo. DCS' damage models are leagues better than war thunder though
@@blessthismessss if you lose the entire wing I HIGHLY doubt the cannon's gonna remain functional, especially considering how the ammo might detonate when the wings are blown off.

This is actually helping how I think about dogfights - even in WWI aircraft. I suppose that maximum time limits at WEP or Afterburner could easily factor in.
It's not really how dogfights work irl. Often times the planes that get shot down never even know they're being shot at. Oh also they might shoot at each other for some time before doing a merge. Sometimes both parties will expend all of their ammunition and not hit each other once. It's a lot less structured.
@@dfct9494 Yep, these are very “chivalrous” dogfights that rarely ever happen anymore. In modern times there’s a lot more intelligence assets (AWACS especially) that allow aircraft to fight over much longer distances.
@@jerrell1169 engagements at beyond visual range are extremely important to US aircraft. For example, to cut costs the targeting system on the f22 was an updated version of the one on the F18 with only a 15 degree angle of attack. When dogfighting with planes with more modern systems like the Eurofighter Typhoon, which can fire missiles with a 180 degree angle of attack, the F22 is going to lose every fight.

Is it just me or is the MiG-19 just such a cool looking jet?! I also think the F-5 looks pretty mean. Not the perfectly proportioned classic awesomeness of the F-15 or the wasp like sexiness (thats a wierd sentence, I admit) of the Flankers, but still a mean looking jet. Much better than the similar T-38.
Mig-19 is the ideal line development of the early 50s fighters and the most beautiful aircraft in DCS. Good to hear it is closer to flying as well as it looks.
My dad really looks good here in red. And you really did use his famous cannons and decent maneuverability to devastating effect.

Interesting to me that with the more advanced 5th gen. fighters, dogfights seem to happen at much closer distances. The 5th gen. tend to have much tighter turning, and of course you want to stay close to the bogie to jam the WEZ. So you ironically have these modern jets with > 1/1 thrust/weight, in a furball at WWII distances and speeds. Earlier jets have wider turns, so after the merge the fight is at a greater distance. (Also a function of deliberately choosing 2 circle). Wide, loopy turns at faster speeds.
Part of the reason for this is because the swept wing design was critical for gaining supersonic speeds at the time and aircraft design was heavily affected by this. Obviously, because of this, dogfighting tactics were developed to take advantage of this speed and climb advantage dating all the way back to the very first fighter developed in WW2. Turning rate was less important when you were several hundred knots faster than your opposition. As the opposition began to catch up, now you're basically back to square one with redeveloping tactics that more closely resembled the fight before you had the significant speed advantage.
My former boss flew F-4s in Vietnam. He wasn’t afraid of MiG-17s or MiG-21s (in most cases) but he HATED MiG-19s. Said they were very capable dog fighters.

The -19 is a pig compared to the Fresco, which will turn circles around it any time of the day.

Sadly no one talks about the history of Mig-19 Farmer in UA-cam. I'm always wondered the history behind it.
One of the first videos from your channel i've seen conveniently this one came up right before i got into a dogfight with a German Mig-19s in War Thunder flying the F-5C thanks to your video i was able to play more smartly and force him to energy trap himself and get the kill even though the flight models are completely different to DCS the information i learnt here was enough to get a bit of an edge on him

I'm way thrilled to see the MiG-19 come out to play GS!!!!! I sure hope that you bring it back out to take on some other planes! I'm told it accelerates like a bat out of hell. I am very curious to know how it would hold up against other jets like the F-4 or Mirage. Probably not too well, but hopefully you find a really good MiG driver to take on since you seem to be pretty dang good in a Mirage.
MiG-19 is such a beast! What a cool plane
The Mig19 has three guns of 30 mm caliber, with 120 rounds of ammunition per barrel. One gun is mounted in the nose of the fuselage at the bottom right, the other two are in the root parts of the wing consoles.

Russian engineering: Take a metal tube, attach some fin like structures to it, put two engines in, and put a cockpit on it!
switch the two engines for a really big one and change the wings to a triangle - now you got the mig21

I wouldn't expect the MiG 19 to have a chance against a (slightly) newer US light fighter.
Seems like the F5 could have reversed the turn into the sun to shake things up a bit. Maybe that would have been a mistake, but doesn't seem so with the sighting systems on these jets.
For absolutely no rational reason at all I have always loved the F5 more than any other aircraft. I kinda hurts to see it get curb-stomped by a MIG-19.

Give him a chance. He doesn't get to fight GS a lot, so this is a good training session for him. He can't get better and become a preferred pilot if he doesn't learn.

With superior missiles, avionics, and better maneuverability in all aspects aside from a slightly lower maximum turn rate... Not even close. Playing a video game and dogfighting likes it's 1942 is not a good way to determine air worthiness lol.

Certainly an old and not as sleek aircraft, but it sure can pack one hell of a punch.
When I see the MiG-19 it reminds of show that used be on the Military or Discovery Channel about air combat. I think it was called "Air Aces". But anyhow, there was an episode about when a MiG-19 encounter a pair of A-1Ds coming back from a CAS SAR mission. The A-1Ds shot it down. Maybe you could recreate that. Just an idea.

I have seen a Black and red JF17 flown by someone not as experienced as you.
If you can by chance get a hold on to the Black & RED Jeff, that would sweeten the screen much more.

Imo those 30mm should have absolutely torn the f5 to shreds in the 1st round. One hits in the intake and the fragments would definitely get sucked into the engine, and one hit is square on the cockpit. Weird damage model interaction imo.

Farmer is a monster in one circle. Use those flaps to advantage. It can beat even an F-16 in scissors (off course only in horizontal).

Do you find people that actually know the capabilities of their plane or does everyone just ignore their own strengths and go to the deck anyway? It really seems like almost everyone just fails to use any of the strengths or tactics that are best for their plane.
