The air frame of the MiG-21 has really beaten the test of time. I think that speaks volumes for the engineers that built it. They were limited by technology that was available to them at the time. Slap some modern avionics and a more efficient/powerful engine in there, and all of a sudden the scales start to move. That was really an impressive fight from the MiG. Who'd of thought an air frame from the 1950's with modern everything strapped to it could keep an F-16 at bay for that long?
I came in to this video expecting to be watching from the mig perspective, and thought we're in for a 5 fight sealclubing video, and was absolutely shocked when the mig made it in to freaking gun range with the f16 down to fox2s. The mig21 bison has just gained a fan with me.
Air fights now-a-days are 90% about electronic and missile capabilities. I kinda already knew the MIG was gonna lose simply because less hard points. Although, like GS points out, the Bison definitely shouldn't be discounted. It has the goods to fight other 2nd tier military jets for sure. I would definitely like to see a US F16 take it on. The more modern AMRAMs might make the MIG's lifespan a little shorter.

A couple of comments about 1950's engineering. Those were the WWII generation who took us to the moon. They really knew what they were doing. I know there is no F-106 available on DCS, but I think you would be shocked if there were. The engineers back then actually expected their missiles to HIT the enemy aircraft, not just get near it. I know the Vietnam era Sparrows were considered junk, but that was problems interfacing to the F-4 electronics. The same missiles from a 106 had none of those problems. There is an interview with a 106 pilot about shooting down a mach 2.5 Bomarc coming head on, in a test, with a contact fused Sparrow. The plane and Sparrow were chosen at random.. The 106 is the fastest single engine plane ever built.
interesting to note is that during operation frequent wind ( the evacuation of Saigon during Vietnam) the always beautiful F-14 made its first debut providing escort to the helicopters and although Tomcat did not see any action against the North Vietnam Mig 21s it would have been an interesting match up to say the least given that the F-14 did not likely have its AIM 54s or the other equipment later on that made it so lethal so maybe a DCS fight with A mig 21 against the early Tomcat unless its been done already
The Vietnamese Mig-21s in the 70s were no where near upgraged as this Bison. Those Mig-21s were the original version, only armed with guns and 2x Stoneage Fox-2s. They weren't a match against the F14s
@@tetraxis3011 you got a point. However, I don't think the Vietnamese Mig-21s is a match against American F14s at that point in time. The F14 is far superior in terms of avionics & aerial maneuver performance

What the MiG 21s did at that time, made the US to come up with a whole new generation of Teens. That's how capable they were. Given the modernisation by India, I would believe their version of the story that the Bison shot down the Viper with the eyewitnesses account describing the ejection chute colour which actually is from an F16.
Indian airforce always upgrade their aircrafts with the best equipments making it the best varients of that aircraft like Mig 21 bison,Sepecat Jaguar Daren 3,Mirage 2000i, Mig 29UPG, and soon Super Sukhoi upgrade for Su30 MKI.
I imagine (much like say, the Sea Harrier) the MiG-21 has a smallish radar cross section because of its size despite its age. Radar still largely depends on physics where reflected energy is based on output power divided by distance^4 with RCS being an important factor. That's why countries are leaning into stealth. RCS is the only factor of that equation you can really control.
The Bison is not the most advanced MiG-21 variant. The MiG-21 LanceR is also a highly modernised variant that just got decomissioned by the Romanian Air Force.
They are both mig-21 upgrades that came out of the many mig-21 upgrade packages of the 90s. They are both similarly modernized calling one more advanced than the other is semantics. The lancerR has more air to ground upgrades and the bison has more air to air upgrades.
The Lancer has no BVR capability while the Bison does. Also the Kopyo radar is better than the elm2032 in the lancer so yes the Bison IS more advanced.

Love to see a video of you going to a gun range sometime - I can only assume you'd be standing on your head trying to fire a Glock downrange while inverted.
Lately the Fox 3 missiles have been extremely ineffective in the videos. I guess so long as you respect the MAR and you are a really experienced pilot the kill chance is almost 0. And since you have consistently been adding SAMs to the matches the MAR is always tiny. It does raise a real world question as to why the US hasn't developed the FMRAAM or at least something like Meteor, that ramjet design turns any plane into a Mig-31 interceptor level of BVR threat.
Yet it is believed that modern dog fights wont happen because of stealth and BVR...At 20 miles, stealth jets are no longer stealthy from that close range.
They actually did develop something like that--the AIM-152. But funding collapsed when the Soviet Union did. After that, the US fought almost exclusively non-peer enemies, and developed stealth aircraft that closed the range gap. It's only recently that they started developing new long-range missiles due to near-peer threats.
I saw a talk on UA-cam by an F-22 pilot who said the Mig-21 Bison was the only plane he was worried about, due to it's speed, jamming capability and modern missiles.
Forget the pylons, all the MiG-21 had to do was carry Archers and get in the merge with the F-16. Indian Bison Migs have HMDS, Pakistani F-16 don't. Easy to guess who'd win that fight.
And that bison did give that F-16 a hell of a fight, imagine all the Amraam and Sidewinders were used, so much for a modernized generation 3 fighter standing up against a modernized generation 4 fighter. And the skill of that Mig-21 pilot is also top notch, my hats off to that pilot.
A good fight and cheers to the Viper FTW. The last thing I heard about India's Mig-21s was they were grounded after one too many crashes. Those things are flying coffins.
This is beyond satisfying. Mig 21 is always one of my imagin enemy since childhood. I absolutely how they modernized post-soviet weapons. I mean, the early migs/AK/Soviet tanks are such good villain materials, ugly, rough, and robust.😂😂😂
The Indian Airforce has plans to completely retire the MIG 21 BISON by 2025-27, as of now they have already started to phase out their older squadrons. Great video as always bro 👍
The Indians fly their Mig21s along with their Su-30MKIs. Its a very interesting combo with the Mig21 being almost invisible to radar and the Su-30MKI having a massive radar and jammer.
Would have loved it if you could fly the bison instead of the F-16. Have seen you flying the F-16 a lot, would love to see you fly some Russian aircraft
Because Mig 21 is much older aircraft and less reliable. But in terms of A2A capabilities the Mig 21 bison can compete with Pakistani F16s. Because most of the F16s Pakistan use are Block 15 variants (They may have some advanced variants).
True Story: Indian MIG-21 at Red Flag, gets into a 110 knot, 60 degrees nose up scissors with an F-16, from 10,000 ft to 20,000ft. The Israeli jammer on the MIG-21 gets the MIG to the merge. The MIG-29 engine and canopy, along with the R-73 Archer made the the Indian MIG no joke.
would be interesting to see a video on theoretical build of the "super" sukhoi's that india is planning by upgrading su30 with AESA radars, and maybe even meteor missiles added to
Not nearly as terrifying if that MiG-21 Bison pilot knew what he was doing. MiG-21 Bison's major advantage against Paki F-16 was supposed to be that the former has HMDS and HOBS missile but the latter does not. Get into the merge with the Bison in that situation and you are toast.
I wish these discounts were there when I was buying my hangar, but I tend to bite on pre-orders when I'm interested in aircraft such as the F-16 and F-18. A MiG-21 Bison officially produced would be absolutely AWESOME though. I personally would be very interested.
Proof of F16 shot down by Mig21 is there on shiv shastry's youtube channel. Altough, we don't have picture of the wreckage as it was in Pakistani Occupied Kashmir. But its a fairly known fact in military circles.
4:18 Pakistan does use JHMCS on its F-16AM/BM eMLUs and F-16C/D block 52+. However the livery that he’s flying is that of the No.19 sqn which is a training squadron that operates the ADF version. The other 3 combat squadrons and 1 aggressor squadron operates with JHMCS on their F-16AM/BM/C/Ds
“Let’s try spinning. That’s a good trick…” In all actuality, DCS is detailed enough that you could probably produce a decent short movie or documentary and have it turn out pretty well.
The first aim9 looked like it ran out of propellant just before impact and fell behind. Wonder if the guidance computer takes that into account cos it seemed like it was accelerating to the target then suddenly lost thrust at the last second. Could it have taken a different intercept path if it knew it would be gliding at the final seconds?
well missiles deff understand that they will be gliding, amraams and other fox3s only burn for 7-12 seconds max, they use whatever kinetic energy they have at that point to hit the target. So the guidance is not dependent on burn, the missile is constantly trying to intercept regardless of energy state.
Indian Air force have shared AWACS footage to back their claims, also some Pakistani generals have said that they lost a F16 which they covered up by have a full blackout in the area & said that they lost a F16 while conducting an exercise. Also they shot on Su 30 but the Su 30 had a toed decoy that took the hit. And the thing is Pakistan signed a pact with US not to use F16s against India.

The aileron turn momentarily changed your RCS. So it's a chance to lose lock, depending on the context of the fight.
I saw a talk on UA-cam by an F-22 pilot who said the Mig-21 Bison was the only plane he was worried about, due to it's speed, jamming capability and modern missiles.
He was joking probably
Lol ya I wouldn’t read too much into that.
An F22 cmon now 😂
I'd have bought it if you said an older f-16 or something. An F-22 come on.

Great performance by the Mig-21 i believe that if it had 6 pylons like the F-16 it could’ve even been victorious
Forget the pylons, all the MiG-21 had to do was carry Archers and get in the merge with the F-16. Indian Bison Migs have HMDS, Pakistani F-16 don't. Easy to guess who'd win that fight.
@@death_paradelol we have proof no f16 was shot down

@@lemonpepperlouisville4138 Pakistani ones don't have HOBS AAM to go with those. Also, PAF has just 17 Block 52, including trainers.
13:58 bro actually became a pencil😂😂
Looked like a bat out of hell coming around that mountain behind that mig
Mig-21 modernized vs F-4 with derby missiles would be wild.
Mig 21 bison have significant advantages there
A good fight and cheers to the Viper FTW.
The last thing I heard about India's Mig-21s was they were grounded after one too many crashes. Those things are flying coffins.
Due to their old age they're getting replaced by the LCA Tejas which will carry the meteor, R77s, Astra MK1 BVR missile

This is beyond satisfying. Mig 21 is always one of my imagin enemy since childhood. I absolutely how they modernized post-soviet weapons. I mean, the early migs/AK/Soviet tanks are such good villain materials, ugly, rough, and robust.😂😂😂
It was very interesting to watch such kind of fight beetween old Mig with modernized avionics and F-16!!
I really wish you would fly aircraft like the mig 21 in these videos instead of just flying the F-16 every time
Really wanna see GS flying Mig-21s fighting against modern jets.
8:28 Blue car on the outside, brown on the inside now.
it was actually a duel that was breathtaking
Would love to see you fly the bison against any opponent GS
The Indian Airforce has plans to completely retire the MIG 21 BISON by 2025-27, as of now they have already started to phase out their older squadrons.
Great video as always bro 👍

Hot damn! That came down to the wire.
Well this is ironic, I was literally looking for F-16 vs MiG 21 videos on your channel yesterday 😂
The Indians fly their Mig21s along with their Su-30MKIs. Its a very interesting combo with the Mig21 being almost invisible to radar and the Su-30MKI having a massive radar and jammer.
14:07 the moment an Aim-9x turned a fighter jet into a pencil
Research Brazilian F5s, which are considered the most advanced F5s in operation, with many improvements.
GS: "Try spinning. That's a good trick."
Cool vid and to clear some doubt, the PAF has JHMCS for all F-16s except one squadron which uses the F-16ADFs
I wasn't expecting the MiG-21to be a threat either. Good fight.
Mig 21 bison is not quite your run if the mill mig 21 bis
And yet again Growling proves Anakin right. Spinning IS a neat trick!
Turning your head around and seeing that viper on your 6 must be terrifying.
Fortunately the MiG-21 has no rearward visibility, so the pilot never had to go through that.
Would have loved it if you could fly the bison instead of the F-16. Have seen you flying the F-16 a lot, would love to see you fly some Russian aircraft
We all know the F16 won't have a chance if GS was flying the MIG21... Remember this was a Pakistani F16... Not US/Nato
@@Ba5edAFin reality over 500 Indian migs have been lost in accidents and only 10 f 16 of PAF sooyou need to take a pill of tolerance and to stay low
Because Mig 21 is much older aircraft and less reliable. But in terms of A2A capabilities the Mig 21 bison can compete with Pakistani F16s. Because most of the F16s Pakistan use are Block 15 variants (They may have some advanced variants).
@@Abdul.Haseeb70 ......indian mig 21 are 60 year old aircraft......we will see how f16 perform after getting old.
Been happening since Cope India 2004 where the Bison surprised USAF F-15 pilots.

That view of a F-16 turning into the merge for a kill would be a terrifying site. Remind me to never piss off an F-16 in a Cessna im flying.
Can you do this fight again, but from the MiG's perspective?
Come on, man! Let’s see the Phantom vs the Tomcat.
I'd live to see another stealth package bombing run, with stealth backup!
That was one hell of a fight, amazing.

In all actuality, DCS is detailed enough that you could probably produce a decent short movie or documentary and have it turn out pretty well.
Would love it if you did more WW2 stuff!!!! Love your vids.

"I'll try spinning, that's a good trick!"
I didn't know there were any versions of the MiG-21 in DCS other then the Bis
