  • A swing joint is made up of a series of from two to five 90-degree pipe elbows and nipples (short pieces of pipe, threaded on each end). These fittings are all threaded together, in a series, to provide a change of direction in the piping. If later, there is some ground movement, the swing joint will “give.” One elbow section will rotate in one direction, while compensating movement occurs in another section.

I have two hydrants to change out on a farm next month, not worried about using a swing joints. Since both will be buried 4’ or so under ground. Not looking forward to digging them up, hopefully it will be dry down there. Both are in a horse barn.

Street fittings are called that because they are the first fitting inside the foundation wall. Sewer will be run with a bell to tie to with a street 90 or elbow of some degree. The principal is the same for the pipe you have.

Teflon tape is NEVER used on stainless steel. There is tape
made specific for stainless, as well as pipe joint compound.

when water mains were being run down a street, the installers would put a tee in front of a house. the branch of the tee was facing up. into the branch they would put an elbow with male threads on one end and female threads on the other. so it was known as a "street" elbow.

Pipe dope is a lubricant that allows you to tighten the fittings tight enough to get a seal. Very hard to do so without dope
