Wayne Gretzky was supposed to have questioned "Bo Knows Hockey?" But, when he skated up, something immediately wasn't right with how he was supposed to deliver the line. So, he simply said, "No." and was going to do a retake. But, the producers loved his response so much, that they kept that as the final take, knowing that, no matter how great an athlete Bo was, there was no way that he knew hockey the way that "The Great One" knew the game.
Yes, according to his autobiography, there were multiple attempts, none of which he or they liked, so they asked him to skate up and just say "No." Gretzky acknowledge that he didn't even get THAT try correct, but the producers loved the way it looked, and used it. Plus, it fit perfectly. As amazing of an athlete Bo was at the time, he wasn't skilled on the ice :)
I laughed so hard when Gretzky said "no". For some reason it reminded me of that comedy skit when Chris Rock says how black people dominate every sport... except hockey.
This entire ad is great and a lot of fun! The funniest part for me though is seeing Bo on the ice with no head gear, and he is just running into skaters knocking them over! 😂
Yes, I agree - wickedly funny, perfectly shot and edited - and when I saw it on TV in Europe at the time I had no idea who Bo Jackson was! I thought "Bo" was a cheeky reference to Bo Diddley and his many songs about various exploits of his, being the toughest guy in town and so on. 😸
The ESPN 30 / 30 doc was amazing to watch.. but yeah, growing up as a kid watching him .. he was like some real life Superman or something! Miss those days
@@mickfunny4185 baseball hall of fame also. Can't help but wonder what he would have done If he wouldn't have gotten injured! I was watching that game when he got hurt. Raiders vs Bengals
I have always believed him to be the greatest athlete ever. He was a stud baseball player with a cannon for an arm and everyone knows how great he was in football.
AQUAPHREESH193 Sheesh, all he did was voice his disdain for the term “throwing shade”. What’s race or politics got to do with this? By the way, there are black hockey players, there are Asian hockey players, and there are certainly leftist hockey players. Great sport.
To hear Bo tell the story of when he felt his hip "pop" still saddens me all these years later. He was truly on his way to being the best pro athlete that ever lived!
Oh, I would have wanted to see that one! I remember the original here very well - saw it in Europe at the time. Over here Bo Jackson wasn't well known, so I thought this guy "Bo" in the ad was an ironic, cheeky reference to Bo Diddley and his exuberant, chestbeating songs about how he was always the toughest and baddest guy around. :) Loved this gem of an ad!
Today, November 6, 2023, Bo's guitar playing at 0:46 would be considered GODLY talent & be analyzed by how he got those guitar sounds. 😂🤣 Back then when this commercial first aired, no record company would dare to touch him.
Seem to recall seeing a "UK"version of this saying Bo knows "real" football (soccer,) and I think Bo knows cricket. Greatest all round athlete ever for sure.
Bo knew everything. GOAT of all athletes. A physical freak and could have succeeded in any sport. The Bengals are still cursed for the tackle that injured that hip :/
2 of those who could be considered the greatest running back of all time weren’t in the NFL yet. Barry Sanders had just been drafted but hadn’t played yet. Emmitt Smith witness drafted the following year.
So did Bo actually lace up and ice skate or is that a look-a-like actor (it cuts away quickly, maybe a look-a-like)? Or is that scene even done on ice?
I grew up in SoCal, was a Rams fan (until they moved to St. Louis), and appreciate Jim Everett. However, he does not belong with Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, John McEnroe! (Or Bo Didley for that matter.)
The commercial had to have been shot in Los Angeles. That's why you have Kirk Gibson (Dodgers), Wayne Gretzky (Kings), the Muscle Beach guys, and yes, Jim Everett of the Rams in the commercial.
Best part of the commercial is Wayne Gretzky saying NO!! LMFAO.
Shannon Green Ha! Yeah I had forgotten that part!
Spit my coffee all over my phone 😂😂😂
That's what makes this commercial absolutely memorable. Wayne with a very definitive "NO."
I didn't even know he played with the Kings

Might be the greatest commercial of all time.
Theres maybe a handful of commercials I remember as a kid and this was one of them. Absolutely a classic.
This entire ad is great and a lot of fun! The funniest part for me though is seeing Bo on the ice with no head gear, and he is just running into skaters knocking them over! 😂
One of the greatest commercials ever.

Man, I remember this commercial from my roaring days in SoCal during the 80's. What a time to be young and single in L.A..
I remember this airing right after he hit that HR in the Allstar game, I loved it.
Bo Jackson has become somewhat of a sports myth. If you weren't there when it was happening you missed something special in professional sports.

This ad campaign was incredible.
This had to be one of the most expensive commercials of all time to get ALL of those super stars in it.
